One of the things I have found playing heavy strings is you don't need to pick very hard to get very clear notes. Pair that a with tremble bleed mod and the highs don't get muddy down sounding at lower volumes that they would without the mod.

This is one of my favorites I’m physically and mentally exhausted when the song is over. When Johnny sings it just adds another layer of texture. When I get frustrated trying to learn scales and play jazz I go back to this and feel the pure energy, power and heart that can be conveyed in I IV V with minor pentatonic. Never forget why we play not to show off, not to impress with our scale and chord knowledge but for that moment when we are tuned in to our soul and it just comes out and everyone can feel it.
@sheehy9333 жыл бұрын
What always gets me about this song is SRV's vocals. The growl, the softness, the drawn out descent of the last word in the lyrics, etc. It is indeed a masterclass of blues. Multiple guitar techniques, not to show off his ability, but to add the feel the song is meant to convey. Same with his vocals, multiple techniques, the growl, the whisper, the descending drawl, not as a display of his vocal prowess, but to serve the song. I often play along with this song, love it.

I've watched the Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985 DVD so many times I've lost count. Religiously when I was teenager, it completely capsulized me and threw me in a haze of goosebumps, tears, and amazement. I was new to learning the six string and it brought on a wave of inspiration like no other, it's one of core reasons why I really stuck to playing and practicing. Witnessing this was honestly like a spiritual moment if that makes any sense. I don't know, I regard it as some type of monolith in my life. Next to hearing/watching Jimi Hendrix and Tyler Childers for the first time, and receiving spare computer parts as a kid from my Drum teacher to build with. Blew me away unlike any concert I witnessed or watched. The whole band is tight, in the pocket, bringing Johnny in at the perfect moments, and all the colors they are able to create is just incredible, truly incredible. Stevie's entire presence, chops, confidence, aura, and how it changes is fascinating too. The drugs and whiskey had a part, I'm aware, but it's more than that. Like the music started communicating with me on an emotional and subconscious level, almost hypnotizing, as strange as that sounds. It's hard to describe I guess. Anyways, this particular song of the concert always blows me away. It was unreal to hear you say, react, and notice everything I did and have the same excitement/passion from it - as no one else I've shown and watched it with felt this way or was moved by it like I was. Happy to know I'm not alone haha. Keep up the great work Mr. Palmisano, and thank you for being my guitar Teacher. EDIT: Just finished the whole video and I can definitely say I that I felt it and will do everything I can to keep that feeling alive.

Playing a slow blues is the hardest thing to do and you nailed the genius of SRV with this . I've been blessed on a few occasions to become "weightless" and it is pure bliss. One night I was performing an improv piece on my acoustic 12 string and when I was done it felt like I just landed. Could not recall all that I did but the standing O I received told me it must have been ok, along with the feeling of the most incredible mental musical high. A friend said they could see that I became one with the guitar. It is a spectacular feeling

You have perfectly crystallized why SRV has been by favorite player for 30+ plus. Player and instrument as one. His ability to emote through the guitar had seen no parallel. SRV is the reason I watch video's like this and have become addicted to music over the years. I do play guitar, but realized years ago that attempts to mimic him are futile. Sure, I could learn the phrases and triads and all that, but SRV possesses something that can't be taught or replicated. The way he attacks the guitar from all angles, while being as dynamic and articulate as humanly possible, he is truly a once in a millenia player. When I first discovered him (early 2000's) i went around showing all of my friends and none of them got it. The best way I've ever been able to describe SRV is that if you watch his face, his body language while he is playing, you could be deaf and still hear it. The emotion/energy/rage/heartbreak/happiness/sadness that SRV can put into the guitar will forever be a thing of wonder. My favorite life performance of his is the Live at the El Mocambo version of Texas Flood. There is a note that he hits combined with his facial expressions at like 1:53 that gives me goosebumps EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Plus, I've always been partial to "Number One"

Thank you so much for sharing your love of and for Stevie, Michael. Like so many other kids perhaps, my first Texas blues musical epiphany had come at the tender age of ten when introduced to Lightning Sam Hopkins; but the second, and most lasting--lifelong, in fact--impression or epithany came when first listening to Stevie; I was aged just sixteen. As you rightly intimate, Stevie did not simply play the guitar, rather, he lived through his guitar and complete immersion in blues culture. In so doing, Stevie channelled his deep respect, admiration and love for those musical greats from whom, and with whom, he felt he owed so much. When we still--and we still do in our thousands or even hundreds of thousands, if not millions--revere Stevie, it is also with a sincere reverence for those same guitar heroes from the past with whom Stevie now jams for all eternity (that is, Blind Lemon, Elmore, Lil Son, T-Bone, Freddie, as well as BB, Muddy and of course Robert). And it is in that hallowed company of greats that we, his loyal followers (read disciples) remain convinced that Stevie was, and remains, the undisputed chairman of the board.

I saw SRV 89-90' NYE at the Fox in Atlanta ...best concert I ever seen

I agree that SRV was the GOAT. I love how the community of fans knows so much about him. Most people who are a fan of his seem so educated about his music. I don’t think people really do their research anymore with artists they listen do. For some people the music is a lifestyle on its own.

Being a lifetime SRV fan, this is probably the most wanted video from you that I ever wanted to see. Thank you! 😃

It's wonderful to put some perspective around fabulous performances like this. I was always amazed, but now I have some idea about what I actually saw. Inspirational, and thanks.

I love this video. Johnny forgot the words to the verse so he played and Stevie sang the verse . At the end Stevie laughs at Johnny and hugs him.😀🎵🎶🎸

SRV did love the Legends like Johnny. I saw an interview on KZbin with Chris Layton & Tommy Shannon and they said when the arrived to play a concert at Red Rocks B.B. King was on stage playing. Stevie asked why. They told him B.B. was opening for him. He said No, he should never open for him like this. Great interview. Thanks for playing Stevie. I'm now subscribed.

I heard SRV play in Springfield, MA, just a few short months before he left us. Both of those, the concert and his future, now part of history, leave me crying. It's as if he were carving the air.

What Michael is saying is exactly right. This video of SRV above all others is a masterclass of dynamics and emotion, never mind the best in class playing.

Oh my god, the tone. I've heard good tone, I've heard great tone. Stevie just crushes that tone, like a mountain, with those bare hands of his

@@chantzarcher4807 my opinion his tone was just as good before the dumbles when he just used vibroverbs, supers, twins, marshall c&c/majors...my point is the man knew tone he had some of the best ears for killer guitar tone. That plus his hands, a massive amount of his tone came from his hands, 2/3rds probably.

You are right about those magical gigs. When everything is goin perfectly. No bad notes, no mistakes whatsoever and the crowd is eating out of the palm of your hand. With Stevie though, that was every night, at every show, throughout his entire career. Even in those first few years, before he got sober. He'd be so messed up, that if regular people like us were as messed up as he got, we wouldnt be able to even stand up. Much less play guitar. Stevie was just a different breed of human, when it came to playing that guitar. Then he got clean, and the guy we thought couldnt get any better, got better! Lol The world was robbed, by not being able to see what all he would have done, in the nearly 35 years since we lost him. I think he would have blown our minds, a thousand more times than he already did.

Man, You & I BOTH love all the little details that make songs like this so amazing. Even the non-musical parts like the backing away from the Mic, just looking cool, knowing everything you're doing is cooolllllll. ALL of the little details that completely captivate the audience!! Its like Harleys, Indians & all the classic cars are what made Route 66 what it's known for, the same goes with these musicians and blues music. That probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but I get it.

His delicacy with those monster strings is astonishing. He gets just the right amount of space and resonance. Total mastery but total emotion.

One of my all time favorite videos. As I all ways say, “if you aren’t sweating, then you are not playing the Blues right”.
