Love how Michael laughs out loud at brilliance. I used to do that all the time and my friends wondered what the heck was going on with me, why in the world are you laughing?? Well, if you're one, you know. The sound just literally tickles your insides as if someone is tickling you, it's a reaction that makes your heart and soul jump alive with a pure joy. That's about the best I can put it.

I was never super close with my dad. But the one thing we can ALWAYS pick up and talk about for hours is what an absolute fucking monster this man was on a guitar. No matter the genre, no matter the setting. The bond we have over Gary's music I will cherish forever. When my dad dies, Parisienne Walkways will be the last song played at his funeral, and it will be the last song played at mine. I dont care what anybody says, Gary Moore was the best guitar player on the planet and its no contest for me. Pure unadulterated emotion through an instrument. May not be the cleanest player, may not be the most technical, but he was the best to ever do it for the reason the guitar was invented: emotion.

Knew him. Hung out In a few local bars with him. He grew up close to me around Belfast. Saw him live In Belfast before he made it big he was such a well known talent in Ireland before he went global. He used to say you Go to school now to play guitar and he played guitar to get away from school. Witty guy. His move from metal, rock and jazz to blues was fascinating at the time. His face scar was caused in a bar when a guy was hassling his girl and the chap broke a beer glass on the table and put it in his face. He played in the kings hall in Belfast around the after the war time and he found the perfect place on the stage to get massive sustain via the amps. He was able to sustain notes for minutes. The sound was searing. Was like he was controlling the voice of a demon. He mastered the use of the instrument.

I went to see Gary Moore in Oxford a couple of weeks before he sadly passed away. I remember the stack of amps and volume being so cranked up that i thought the balconies in the venue would tumble down on the audience. My head was completely exploding with this assault of sound and distortion. This was the loudest guitar i ever heard and all i could do is stare with my mouth open. Most impressive still, this was played with such feel and control. It was like a roller coaster of guitar playing. I will never forget that night and that sound. Rest in peace Gary, may you rock in heavens with the greats.

Gary moore is one of the most technically excellent guitarists ever - a true talent that will live on forever - loved him! Thanks Micheal

Its funny because I wouldn't use "technically" to describe him at all. He's more like a chained up pitbull snapping at all the people walking by because he just wants them to pet him. Pure aggressive emotion.
@iceman101292 жыл бұрын
and by "not technical" I mean he's not sitting here thinking about the mathematics of the fretboard like a jazz player. He is playing tonally, sticking with blues runs, and just ripping through them. Yes playing fast is technical.
@colincampbell38492 жыл бұрын
Natural folks is a better word but to do it with ease and not think about it means his mind is technical - he did things that we hadn't seen at that level before and made a guitar sing better than anyone I've ever heard - a true legend in my eyes

From the wall to the Amp to his soul to the fret board...just completely unbridled Gary Moore the legend 👏
@trixlee51022 жыл бұрын
@@andymccallum8090 Wasn't that clean? Sheesh! Those fast runs sounded pretty articulate to me considering the gain on that amp! It takes a lot of control and technique to even keep that kind of amp from feedbacking at all times. How much cleaner do you expect with a Les Paul and his settings?

Gary Moore had arguably the greatest most ferocious tone of any guitar player in history, I saw him at the roxy in Hollywood back in 1987, he had 2 one hundred watt jcm 800s, two 4x12 cabs , a cry baby and a tube screamer, that’s it, he melted paint and crushed other guitarist dreams. It’s rumored that many who saw him that night switched to drums. However he inspired me.

Gary also had absolutely enormous hands - one of the reasons I think he favoured his second finger for some of the bends.....cramming three fingers into the box shape in higher positions was practically impossibl e for him. Also, learning to bend on an acoustic guitar left him with such strong, huge hands that his choice of strings and action left many players unable to play his guitars at all.

Gary was an innovative heavy metal and blues guitar player. When he started performing the blues Albert Collins and Albert King did not like his ear cringing distortion that he brought from Thin Lizzy or his Dirty Fingers days but when he left heavy metal and decided to change the blues sound they couldn’t argue the fact that he had done it and they both hitched a ride on his wagon and change their approach to sound on stage. He was an amazing vocalist an composer of music. When “still got the blues” came out it could be heard on rock, soft rock and romance stations everywhere. Very few songs have ever been able to accomplish that feat. A technical wizard yes, but what he did too reinvent the blues and the blues ballad was his real legacy.

Love your channel! Had to comment because I think you’ve perfectly nailed Gary : a juxtaposition of master control and chops w/ the bawls of a Stallion! EVH hid the fact that he was a musical assassin behind his beguiling smile, but Gary gives no F’s for smiles. He knows he has that 100W SuperBass and he’s gonna make sure you leave the show having PHYSICALLY FELT that punch. You said it a lot Michael but to underscore: people can learn a lot about taming a wily 4 hole Marshall just by watching Gary’s use of the guitar controls and his two hands. Reverb sounds like it’s in front of the amp…So his picking force also controls the degree of reverb. THANKS AND BRAVO!!

What you were talking about, regarding the amplifier is the instrument, playing the electricity, that's the one thing that Les Paul never understood, here was the guy who basically invented it but he never realized it was a totally different instrument, that the guitar and the amp together was a new instrument, not just an amplified guitar. I think Gary Moore's tone on the "Blues for Greeny Album is as perfect of a humbucker sound as you can get.
@Guitargate2 жыл бұрын

That's a pretty profound way to put it and I never though about that. I mean Les Paul was almost looking to do completely away with amps with his recording model and those crazy low impedance pickups. He once mentioned he spent so much of his life trying to perfect the guitar to be able to provide perfectly clean usable sound plugged in directly to a recording console and he didn't get these Jimmy Page guys who were plugging into a big Marshall and cranked up the grit. He never really understood that electric feel. That's one of the few things that got past the wizard.

If you live in America, you think Thin Lizzy was some 70's band who played 'Boys Are Back In Town' and nothing else. I learned of Gary through his Lizzy work. Best of the best.

He was on a higher level than most guitarist really. It was his voice and he knew how to talk.

I have no words to describe my utmost admiration for Gary Moore. The "Live Blues" show is off the charts, gotta go to school sometimes!

I've been a fan since the mid 80s when I first played Parissienne walkways on a jukebox in a bar in my hometown in N. Ireland. Where Gary is from. I was stunned. I played it 5 or 6 times in a row.

Fantastic review - even listening to Gary sing this song gives me chills as well. Part of Thin Lizzy in the 70s, he was so fearless! ❤

That was EPIC, wish I’d have been there, I did see him as a 17 year old playing with Skid Row with Phil Lynott on bass.

Epic quotes "This is what the electric guitar is all about"! :) Very poetic Michael, a lovers' description of the 'lightning bolt' coming out of the wall and being transformed on the way to the listener.

Thanks so much for this respectful review of Gary Moore, I really enjoyed it ! Before I moved on to fusion guitar (Greg Howe expert), Gary was my big example, I studied him for years. The secret to his typical fast blues scale runs (besides inserting the blue note) is literally forcing yourself to use the middle finger (which you picked up well). Took me a few years to figure that out and the best examples of this is the outro of Story of the Blues. If you can play those fast lines you can say you mastered that element of his style 😁

C'mon, more Gary live reactions from you, you're hilarious and you know what he's doing on the guitar, so fun to watch

Michael, wise words. Pristine&clean players you can find more than ever. But there is something above letting yourself go. I think that is what is Gary Moore all about.

I’ve been a huge fan of Gary’s for a long, long time. Watching Gary play is hypnotic, you cannot help but get sucked into where he is…just amazing…and he truly was taken from us to early, at least we have recordings and videos to keep us connected to his music. I have a suggested watch and review, another guitar player with his own planet, that too was taken from us way to soon…Rory Gallagher…very few players cause my neck hair to stand on end…he is one of them, along with Mr. Moore. I highly recommend some Rory Gallagher to put a smile on your face…enjoy
