For me personally when it comes to guitar theory and explaining it Brian is second to none. I always thought theory was just beyond me and I would never twig but slowly slowly and. ( literally at the beginning by accident) I plodded along and it has made a significant difference and has definitely increased my enjoyment on our instrument. My only regret is not meeting Brian decades ago but feel so lucky to have found him now and know I owe him big time. Cheers everybody.

Peter Jackson and Oliver Stone … two geniuses who are known to create exceedingly long film productions of extreme quality, whilst maintaining ultimate interest and attention throughout the many hours involved in their presentations. Brian Kelly … a genius who creates guitar theory lessons of extreme quality, whilst maintaining ultimate interest and attention throughout the many hours involved in their presentations. Now ... as an added bonus, we lucky Zombies have just been provided with an awesome summary of many years of hard work, condensed into 60 minutes!! Well done Brian … so much appreciated mister!!

Thanks for the words Phil! I wouldn't call myself a "genius" by any means, but if you want to call me that I won't argue 🤣. But seriously...this is just the arithmetic. If someone was able to simplify "jazz", that person would be a genius!

Brian, I have been playing guitar for many years and began writing and singing originals since 2012. I was limited on my knowledge of guitar as far as song-writing is concerned and found it difficult to put all the pieces together. I began understanding patterns and knew the CAGED system somewhat, but it was not sticking. After watching your video, which I paused 8 million times to grasp it, I feel so much better in my ability to play all the way up the neck. In particular, your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd string techniques for the CAGED system...Mind Blowing! I know if I slide up to a G at the tenth fret on the A string, my two options there are the C-Shape and the A Shape! Many tutorials out there dance around teaching and really seem to leave out the patterns to learn for beginners or at least they are difficult to find. Thank you for putting this video together! I can't believe this doesn't have millions of views considering what a guitar player can learn by just sitting down, taking some notes, and working through, with guitar in hand, how all this comes together! As you say, you only have to really truly learn it once and then practice. High fives all around!🎸🎤

I would like to add to Brian's response to the person who wrote to him and said, "If music theory is so simple, why do you have so many videos." But first I want to add, as so many people have, that Brian is second to none as a guitar teacher. I've learned more from him in the past 2-3 years than I learned in the previous 50+ years. My thoughts on why there are a lot of videos: *Some people want to go in more depth on certain topics than others do. *Some people (me, a prime example) need to hear the same or similar thing multiple for it to really sink in. *Not everyone will see any given video, so if he just did one video that dealt with triads, no everyone would see it. *Explanations can be approached from different angles, or combining various other knowledge bits, thus giving a fresh perspective on the topics. *There are an almost endless number of topics to cover - not everyone is interested in the same thing. *MANY of Brian's videos are in response to a question or point of confusion to his students (that is, US), so he's being attentive to, and responsive to his students, which is a very admiral trait. *As good as Brian is (and he's the best), he's still always trying to improve, expand, clarify, provide more value to his students. I welcome all of you to add to my list, because I'm sure I've missed some very important aspects!

As a Scientist/Mathematician, your video really resonated with me being onto learning the theory for 1.5 years now. What an enjoyable journey. Your approach is very simular to what I am currently working on as a Mastery of Root Triads 3NPS Pentatonic Triad shapes that connect to 3NPS to give you all chord progressions for any Key. This has simplied the need to learn multiple shapes since the pattern connects to itself in a repeating way of finding the Root on any string and Run on the track until you hit the Pentatonic. Thanks so much for your insight on this. Still flushing it out as a newbie, but what a difference simplicity makes. It confirms to me that it is Solid Way, as a starting point for a Building block to help others.

What makes Brian so effective is his low tolerance for bullsh*t. Brian strips a concept down to its understandable essence. Example in this vid: A-string home box. OH! NOW I see it! His vid on the CAGED system is masterful: root on low E? E or G shape. Period. Root on A string? A or C shape. Period. Root on D string: D shape. Period.

At around 19:35 when you talk about the Dm chord being outside the Gmaj key. Since that chord works in line with the Gmaj Mixolydian scale mode because of the flat 7th (F note). I’m curious, would that key using the Dm chord be call the key of Gmaj Mixolydian? Or since GMix is just a mode of Cmaj, would the key be Cmaj, in the mode of GMix?
@palhabberstad9531
@palhabberstad9531 5 ай бұрын
I’ll give it a try. Mixolydian is always major. D minor can in fact (in different keys) be the second (dorian), the third (phrygian) or the sixth (aeolian - usually referred to as just minor). The D minor chord is not a part of the G major scale, because the notes «available» in that key does not contain the note that makes up a D minor chord, but rather a D major chord. In the key of G major the D major chord is the fifth chord, and if you start from the fifth note in that scale, you play D mixolydian. Why mixolydian? Because if you try to use the D major scale (ionian) over the D major chord when in the key of G major, it will be and sound out of key. G mixolydian is over the G major chord in the key of C major…

Hello Brian Thank you for the videos. You mentioned in a Zombie Guitar video (I'm not sure if you talked about it on YT as well) that we need to change the scale when playing a (12 bar) blues solo based on each chord, but mentioned here that it is a misconception that the scale needs to change throughout the song. Just wanted to know why that's the case, thanks.
@zombieguitar
@zombieguitar 11 ай бұрын
Yup you are talking about approach #3 in my "4 approaches to soloing over a 12-bar blues progression". Two things about that: 1.) When you "switch pentatonics" over a I IV V progression (or any progression in which all chords are from the same key), you aren't actually switching scales. You are still remaining in key. I did a whole video on the multiple pentatonics thing here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH_Yk6mQl79soZI In short, you can compare the notes of the overall G major scale to the notes of the "3 pentatonics" found in the key: G major scale: G A B C D E F# G major/Em pent: G A B D E C major/Am pent: C D E G A D major pent/Bm pent: D E F# A B 2.) That video is about "blues theory", which is a different way of thinking than "diatonic theory". The goal in blues theory is usually to combine major and minor tonalities, and this can be done by targeting chord tones of the dominant 7th form of each underlying chord. Ultimately you're not thinking "one scale per chord". Rather you're thinking "one dominant 7th chord framework per chord". But with regards to diatonic music theory where you are considering which scale(s) to play over, say a I vi V IV progression, there's no need to play a different 7-note diatonic scale for each chord. You only need the one key scale! 🎸

@@chriskeel3096 things like the CAGED system and the 5 pentatonic positions are guitar specific, therefore "guitar theory".

Perhaps clickbait titled comedy song shorts making fun of the algorithm ect by Brian could be the ultimate solution. Give the algorithm what it wants to increase guitar zombie traffic a lot! While providing therapeutic trolling relief. Thats the genre of music I'm mostly working towards. Comedy trolling ala weird al yankovich with overtones of gilmour and pantera. Your funny af when your having fun with it. You could kill it with traffic increase that way. Blessed day B
