Its definitely worth learning the open D because it has such a bright sound, and you can switch really easily to D7, Dm, A, A7, Am or slide up to E flat

Sean, have watched a boat load of you videos and absolutely love your stuff. I’m yet another 50+ returning guitarist after decades of setting the guitar to the side. Looking at it from time to time, I seldom picked it up and was always frustrated if I did. Your videos helped re energize my interest and I’m deep diving now with a passion I never had. I’ve actually broken through old limits and I’ve been buying guitars left and right like an idiot obsessed. Anyway, this video in particular hit home for me in terms of highly useful little “tricks” while also causing me to bust out laughing a few times. Keep up the excellent work!

Sean, that lesson was not only informative but HIGHLY entertaining as well! The "half-step shuffle" insight bordered on being sublime. No longer will I voice a D chord like a ukulele player. NO! I will slide into that chord inversion and look like a pro. A fine start to the weekend....

Great tips, especially the "what to do when you daydream during a gig and can't remember what chord to play trick." I would call that chord 'The Everything Bagel'. Or maybe "Downtown Train,"-- you step on the platform, no clue where you are, strum everything muted while waiting for the next train (chord) to arrive. :-)

Good lesson. Especially the percussive 'oops I got lost part', I get lost sometimes and lose my momentum and then suck. One of the most memorable guitars I ever played was a friend's old Taylor 110. It was so enamored with Taylors I went to several guitar stores and tried a full range (up to $5000 ones!) and could not find that sound and feel that I had experienced with the old 110.

Sean. You're so right. I've played for years. In Nashville 22 years. Sometimes, that tired old country ass d is not cool. Think I have 4 or 5 variations now. It's fun to pick up just a small thing, funny how many times you can apply it. Mof, I catch myself prematurely judging , what have been good players, when they play old school d. At times, if I DO use it, just lift your middle finger, e string.

Just got through watching your chord substitution video, as an intermediate guitar player it doesn't bother me at all that you don't teach songs on here, because what you have done for me is open up little nuggets here and there that are making me better at playing up and down the neck. I haven't made it to a "primo" lead guitarist status yet, but I understand things a lot better now and am slowly getting better bit by bit at improvising. There are plenty of channels on youtube that teach songs!

I got a bonus tip for ya: If you need your left hand to scratch your face or pick your nose or whatever, do it during a G chord. You got 3 open strings in the middle and even if you hit the other ones it usually doesn't sound too bad. Way better that stopping of hitting open strings during another chords. And you got to pick your nose

Very cool but I like my begginers D shape because your pinky can go walk about on the top E string and on the G string too and if you use the trad D shape but use middle , ring and pinky you can then go walk about with your pointer finger for lots n lots of hammer ons and pull offs etc etc And you can invert it literally and play a D7 simple shape and go walkies on that too!!...Mucho fun...Plus u can bass with your thumb lol...So simple D is not so shabby! Although I do like your trick D too! Have fun......
