I’m a Gen X on the cusp of being a Boomer. A lot of my guitar playing friends believe that Blackstar amps are crap, but only two of us have tried Blackstar amps and we both think they’re great. We both bought one. The thing is, the aspirational amps for people in their 50s are mainly Fender and Marshall. I think people declare their brand loyalty and hate things which aren’t on their GAS list. 👍😁👍

I own the peterson strobo stomp, and I love it. Its super visible, has all the options(which I don't use), and it leaves no room for ambiguity. Yes, if you want to tune to the exact note, it can be fiddly, but you quickly get a feeling for "oh, now it sounds good enough" movement. We never tune our guitars to the EXACT pitch. It's just not possible, and to learn to balance these inaccuracies is quite valuable in my opinion. And this tuner doesn't "lie" to you like other tuners, where they just go "green, now it is good. red, now it is bad".

One thing to note about tuning apps on your phone: from my own experience, the Boss one seems to be compatible with iRig type devices, so if you have something like that, they can become much better than they are as standalone apps. That said, pretty much any kind of tuner will do the job better, but best not to completely write off the apps. And IN A PINCH they can still be lifesavers, if you have literally zero other options at the ready.

My warning and what to consider when shopping for a tuner: Will you be able to see it when playing a gig outside in bright sunlight? An analog needle won't be a problem.

As far as clip on tuners go the D'Adarrio isn't bad at all in a pinch. I've tuned using it and plugged into my Peterson strobo plus to check how out of tune the guitar was. It's close enough for rock n' roll. For stage use I'd use my boss tu-2 it doubles as a on off switch for the signal to the amp. No flipping the pick up selector switch for me when I want that particular guitar effect.

There was an audible difference even while listening through my phone speakers. You did show the bypass sound - I would love to hear the sound of your direct in tone vs. pedal board without tuner / buffer and then a sample with the buffer effect active. I've been struggling with my amps feel and tone being off when I run my pedal board , specifically with regards to some noticeable tone loss while using a pedal board without a buffer, perhaps just adding a tuner would solve my issue?

@BambiTrout
@BambiTrout 3 жыл бұрын
I've just got a standard crappy Fender clip-on for my 5-string bass. I thought it only worked for the D and G strings at first, and occasionally the A, but I discovered after a bit of experimenting that it actually DOES work for the lower strings. You just have to REALLY let them ring out. The temptation is to just keep plucking faster and louder, but you should do the opposite - I presume it's something to do with wavelengths or sample rates or whatever. It takes about a second or two before it registers, but as long as you just let it ring without plucking again, it should pick up the low B, E, and A fairly easily. I hope this helps :)

Omitting the ‘power out’ jack was probably for the best; as that large, beautifully bright 13-segment display is driven with multiple square waves flying at several thousand high-voltage/low-voltages per second. There are at least two practical reasons why it only includes power in: 1. The high frequency switching is prone to dirtying up supply voltage. It’s like a tube amp’s ‘sag’ when you’re hitting the gain stages something fierce, lowering the available supply voltage and affecting both the available headroom and the amplifier stages’ biasing- except it’s not musical and often causes lots of problems. The circuit would need more components, space, and cost to make sure it’s never a pedal that lets its only application be affected by the only thing it does. 2. Just good old current draw! This guy consumes 27mA in bypass, 40mA when active but no audio incoming, and 56mA(rated)-70mA(tested) while you’re actively using it. Tube screamers are rated at 7mA while the venerable Metal Zone is at 20mA. Being known for blazing through batteries compared to the long-running, simple pedal isn’t good for business or players. If guitarists could blame one pedal for why two aren’t powered, they would. Then they’d do that internet thing about it. Thanks for another enjoyable video!

@KDH
@KDH 3 жыл бұрын
On its own there isn’t much difference but it also depends on the length of the cable. Is it 10ft or 50ft? That’s where it starts to matter. Combine a long cable with a decently sized pedalboard and then another long cable to the amplifier and there can be a very noticeable difference. The cables don’t have to be expensive to be good though. In fact making your own high quality cable is often cheaper than most store bought options.

Not enough mids in that glass for my liking, so 0/10 visualisation. I watched this whole 13 minute tuner video, lockdown definitely hasn't got to me.

It’s ridiculously heavy! Weighs 27.2KG (60 lbs) Next video is about blackstar and then it’s being moved because I want to get some weight out of that corner of the room.

I run a rack tuner in the studio and it's patched to everything. It's a perfect setup. You plug into the rack no matter if you are using Sims or live amps.
