Күн бұрын

In this week's episode, I'm going to show you several pedals that are just unashamed clones of other pedals. Let’s be honest. This is more for my own amusement than anything else. These units are the pedal equivalent of copying your friends book report. In the comments let me know if you've ever played any of these shameless units!

I have several Behringer pedals. They are "OK". I also have a few boutique pedals that are interesting, overpriced and maybe a rip-off. They seemed like a good idea at the time. Currently I'm collecting "Amps-in-a-Box". To each his own. You may not be able to get Behringer's for $4.95 but maybe $15.

I would stay out of the pedal business. I could design a pedal that I like and if I brought it to market, it would be the same or "too similar" to an existing pedal. Unless I could imagine a unique sound that I don't think has been done before, (which I can't at this time and I'm 65), I'd play it safe and just stay out of the arena. Look how Spirit sued Led Zeppelin (unsuccessfully) because Stairway to Heaven had some note & chord sequences that was similar to a song of theirs. The ruling was based on the fact that probably all of those note sequences have been used for centuries, with examples. Pedal designs have not been around for centuries but there are known circuits that cause effects such as fuzz ( a friend of mine build a fuzz for me in high school in 1973). It didn't come "with a box" but I still own it and the circuit board is simple. It would be so easy to swap out some caps, diodes or resistors and change the effect. I'd never even think of marketing it because whatever I came up with would probably resemble someone else's pedal and I don't have time to research all the electronics patents.
@ViviSectia
@ViviSectia 3 жыл бұрын
@@cjgrasser759 Almost the entire pedal industry is just those old circuits with some caps or diodes changed or sometimes just outright clones. There are very few pedals that actually are unique enough that they don't resemble another pedal. Marketing is the backbone of the pedal industry.

I happen to have a Sound JS Stereo Chorus CE-5 and the output jack of it is actually stereo. You got to plug a TRS cable into it and get stereo signals on tip and ring then. You may need a Y-adapter in order to use that signal. Now the best thing about it: The stereo signal is useless to the bone. The bacon sound becomes even louder while a good part of the "stereo" chorus effect cancels out. Amazing!

Well, come to think of it, there were some Spanish pirates, as Pirates of the Caribbean would have us to believe, so maybe the Russian ties were to Spain itself and not the Latin American colonies. I was huge Temple Of The Dog fan when that was released. Reach Down is an all time great (math) rock song. Having worked in the telcom and bicycle industries in Taiwan and China I very much enjoyed this episode. Finding knock offs of products you've been involved in getting to market can be crushing. At the same time it can be fun to see how someone else reverse engineers things. One observation I'd like to offer is that I've seen Japanese companies licence designs to other companies who can produce them at lower cost. The agreement is usually that they only sell them into markets not focused on by the licencing company. Or they are stealing the intellectual property and selling into a market where the patents and copy writes can't be enforced.

I liked Temple of the Dog a lot, I like just about anything Chris Cornell has ever been involved in. It seemed to me that was more like a "pre-PearlJam" than a merging of anything. They decided they couldn't go on as Mother Love Bone but that affected Soundgarden and Cornell in particular as much as anyone. So this came as a result before they all went their separate ways.

Temple Of The Dog was a tribute to Andy Wood, and it was FROM that mish-mash of musicians from various groups, that Pearl Jam formed (at first, as Mookie Blaylock). Obviously being close to it all, I feel that this specific element of this album, is historically significant, but most important is for people to DISCOVER the album, and from that, they can start tracing band lineages, and deep diving into a number of great bands from that time and place.

Mother Love Bone's singer, Andrew Wood, had recently died due to a drug overdose just as their debut album was released. He was a good friend of Chris Cornell. They had lived together for a time. Chris wrote some songs about Wood and asked Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament of Mother Love Bone if they wanted to record them with him as a tribute. The tribute songs grew into an album. While this was going on, Jeff and Stone had started forming a new band with Mike McCready on guitar. They didn't have a name yet. During the Temple of the Dog recording sessions, Eddie Vedder had come up from San Diego to audition for the new band which would become known as Pearl Jam. They asked him to sing on Hunger Strike. Don't remember if he had any other backing vocals on the album or not. They toured a little as Temple of the Dog, but I don't think there was ever an idea to be a permanent band since Soundgarden were on the verge of their breakthrough with Superunknown and the new formation of Mookie Blaylock/Pearl Jam. It was always meant to be a one off tribute to Andy Wood.

@@scedge This is very accurate. I was... close... to the whole situation (friends with a number of the people involved - no namedropping, that's not the point). There was a big Andy tribute show at The Paramount, where Temple Of The Dog played (that show was maybe without Chris, of memory serves). For such famous groups involved in the realization of that project, I'll say again, I think it's odd how muddled the history became to those who weren't there, despite being fans of the various groups. Before the rest of the world realized there was something going on musically in the Northwest, Andy seemed poised to become a huge star, and he was a good musician, amazing sense of humor, and so on. When he died, it GUTTED all of us who were friends with him, or even just casually knew him. Obviously many tragedies and losses to come, but none of us knew that, of course, so Temple Of The Dog was such a cathartic thing for all of us, amd fans of Andy/MLB/Malfunkshun

Pushin' Forward Back is my favorite on the album! The Melvins - Hold It In is pretty great. King Buzzo & Dale Crover are joined by Paul Leary & Pinkus from The Butthole Surfers. There are a few songs on there that sound like Butthole Surfers songs but with Buzz on vocals instead of Gibby. The Hindu Love Gods self titled album is pretty great too. Warren Zevon backed by Mike Mills, Peter Buck, & Bill Berry of R.E.M. playing covers. Their version of Raspberry Beret is really good. Speaking of Soundgarden, while there is no official release of this, the Tadgarden show is super cool! Soundgarden reunited in 2009 playing Soundgarden songs but with Tad Doyle singing

@leeroyfunk 4 жыл бұрын
@Rumy 73 I don't think that JHS is really that straight forward about the fact the many of his "designs" are little more than tweaking a few cap and resistor values here and there of pre-existing circuits: Wheeler Fuzz - Zvex Wolly Mammoth Andy Timmons - Mi Audio Crunch Box Angry Charlie - Mi Audio Crunch Box All America - Pro Co RAT Alpine - Sky Pedals Cloud 9 Astro Mess - Devi Ever Hyperion Bass Mini Bomb - Tim Escobedo's Duende JFET (Bass version) Blender - ROG Splitter-Blender Bun Runner - Devi Ever Hyperion + Tone Bender Charlier Brown - Zvex Distortron Double Barrel - Marshall Bluesbreaker + Ibanez Tube Screamer Emperor - Arion SCH-1 Feedback Looper - diy Feedback Looper with volume control added FireFly - Sola Sound ToneBender MKIII(Madbean PastyFace) Green Tea - Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer(Bass) + ROG Splitter-Blender + Tim Escobedo's Duende JFET Honey Comb - EA Tremolo Kilt - Bixonic Expandora + Booster(booster not traced) Lime Aid - Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer (Bass version) Low Drive - Ibanez Tube Screamer with fat mod and clipping mod Mini Bomb - Tim Escobedo's Duende JFET Moonshine - Ibanez Tube Screamer with fat mod and clipping mod Morning Glory - Marshall Bluesbreaker Muffuletta - EHX Big Muff Pandamonium - Zvex Wolly Mammoth + ROG Flipster Panther Analog Delay - BOSS DM-2 Panther Cub V 1.5 - BOSS DM-2 Pink Panther Delay - BOSS DM-2 Pollinator - Dallas Arbiter/Dunlop Fuzz Face(Germanium) Pulp n Peel - Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer Ruby Red - ROG Superaux Deux + booster(booster not traced) State Line - Zvex Distortron + Marshall Blues Breaker Superbolt - ROG Superaux Deux Sweet Tea - Ibanez Tube Screamer + Mi Audio Crunch Box The Calhoun - Eighty Seven Percent - De Stijl + Sola Sound ToneBender MKIII(Madbean PastyFace) Twin Twelve - Eighty Seven Percent - De Stijl Warble Tron - Uni-Vibe(Madbean Harbinger One) Note that whilst some of these are pedals made by big businesses that probably don't care about the numbers JHS is selling, some are smaller independent builders and plenty are DIY designs where the actual designer is known. In the case of the Devi Ever pedal, he denied it was a clone for a while until it turned out that, actually it was a clone.

@Rumy 73 Everyone is straight forward about their clones, they do the same layout, color and knobs and everything, just cause they don't write a paragraph or make a vid doesn't mean they are not saying it, JHS just charges "premium" pricing at "boutique" BS. Of all the pedals I owned, JHS and Wampler are the only two that died on me, and the only two that fit that description, I found tons of better alternatives, I stopped buying any a long time ago.

One of my all time favorite records, is "Metamorphosis" by Iron Butterfly. After the success of In a Gadda Da Vidda, they made another album with the same line up (possibly two). Following that, guitarist Eric Braunn leaves the band and is replaced by two. One is Mike Pinnera from Blues Image (Ride Captain Ride), who also sang. The other is a wicked slide guitarist called Rhino. This lineup only released this one studio album , then broke up for five years. This album blew me away the first time I heard it, and still packs a mighty punch. I also think it is one of the best recorded albums ever, it is mixed really well. I've met other people who share my thoughts in that regard, it really must be heard. The album was somewhat successful at the time, with the single "Stone Believer" getting some FM airplay. I hope you enjoy Metamorphosis as much as I have.

Masters of Reality "Sunrise on the Sufferbus" - Our incomparable Mr. Ginger Baker joins existing band with singer who sounds eerily like Jack Bruce to create album of unclassifiable alt rock, sounding like an echoing inpressionistic rendering of Cream from an alternate universe in which the concept of long blues-based guitar solos does not exist. The Smithereens "Meet the Smithereens" - The Smithereens cover "Meet the Beatles", itself an alternate American version of "With the Beatles" with three songs added and five songs (all covers) omitted, seemingly unconcerned with sounding remotely like the Beatles.
