Guitar Tuning on Violin

When I get a 6 string electric violin the 1st thing I’m doing is tuning it like my guitars.

I play guitar and mandolin… it was easy to learn mandolin, because I picture it as taking the bottom 4 strings of a guitar, doubling them up, and flipping them upside down. Kind of like playing a left handed guitar, but I would feel weird stringing my mandolin upside down.

What if you tune your guitar to the standard violin tuning? Might need odd string gauges though

You would buy a Mandocello set for the middle 4 strings, standard treble e string, and custom gauge f string for the bass

Robert Fripp of King Crimson used his "new standard tuning" that was all fifths. It didn't become the new standard needless to say. I think it needs a tweak in string gauges to accommodate the larger total range, but the main things is mostly fourths with a third in there just plain works for chords

Then you get what's called a tenor guitar, Warren Ellis is probably the most notable tenor player. I changed the strings on my guitar, and yeah I had to look up a string gauge calculator to get the right tension, but it's totally worth it if you're coming to the guitar from a lifetime of violin like I am.
