What I like about Michael's video's is that (as a non-guitar player) it just feels like I'm enjoying music with a friend, admiring the artist and his or her craft. That's what makes it so satisfying to watch Michael's video's to me.

@@HowIsThat69 Really just a lot of overlapping groups going on. DRH plays with Scary Pockets, and Mayer. So does Sean Hurley on the bass. Scary Pockets are really becoming a sweet "house band" for a lot of artists, and always featuring sweet musicians in the band. Mayer loves that shit so it's no surprise he'd collab with them.

If you dig DRH getting funky, check out his band from waaaay back. They were called Follow for Now and they made one, incredible self-titled album. They were amazing, but I believe they suffered the same fate as Living Colour and 24-7 Spyz. Record companies don’t have a clue how to market a black rock group.

Okay, commenting to explain something I just figured out bc I am a relative music theory baby: When he first explains the opening chord progression / bass line going F - Eb - Bb, he refers to Eb as "going down to your IV chord, if you will", implying that the key is Bb major. He later talks about the solos being in F minor blues though. If this is his first time listening through it'd be real easy to assume at this point it's just V - IV - I in Bb, and the chords in the chorus all work in both keys: iv-II-IV-I for F and iii-VI-I-V for Bb. This confused me for awhile because V-IV-I seemed like a straightforward progression and I recalled reading that vii isn't commonly used in chord progressions, but Eb is actually the bVII here which is plenty common in bluesy songs (in basic F major the vii would be Edim not Eb). In basic music theory stuff you might come across statements like "vii is uncommon in chord progressions" and this might be true (🤷‍♂) but bVII in blues/pop/rock is not the same thing. If you search for "bVII blues" you'll see different combinations of I-bVII-IV are super common. Anyway, by the chorus (~6:58) he's talking about Gmaj as the II and the song being in F but doesn't ever correct or explain the role of that Eb. I might've over-interpreted his earlier comment and this is probably old news for people who watch this channel regularly but if like me you found this video because you liked the song and were trying to figure it out maybe this'll be helpful.

Michael, another excellent video! I find it interesting the tempo that David Ryan taps with his foot, versus Mayer. Trying to remember anything in GuitarGate courses that might talk about this or these videos. Curious as to what you would say about what the foot tapping tempo says about the different people’s “feeling” of the groove?

Ok. Possibly a stupid question. If the 2 chord should be minor if in key, but they go hard 2…. Is there some rule that says “any” 2, 3, or 6 can be just changed to major and it’s all good? Or is it related to where that hard 2 chord is GOING… just when I’m like ok I got this, the rules change. Lol. Sounds great though. Thanks!
@MorganBird
@MorganBird Жыл бұрын
Not stupid! Not an expert but nobody's answered yet: When I've looked this up the tl;dr is rules in music are basically never *rules*; you can do lots of things that create a particular effect or sound and the standard ones like minor ii are just the ones that sound best in most cases. Major II/III/VI I guess can be used to lead into other chords in certain ways. I'm working on playing and singing this so I've spent a little time figuring pieces out. This spot specifically I'm not sure about how G Major "works" in the chord progression but when DRH sings "Do what you doooooooo, I've got your back" and the note choices create tension-I guess; it sounds out as not a common progression to me-the note on DO is B natural, which isn't in the key but IS the third in a G major chord. Then he drops down from B to B flat as the chord changes to B flat. Kind of a shotgun non-answer but I hope this helped some :)
