The thing I like about PRS is that if I want to buy a Strat I'd have to go out try 50 to find the right one. With PRS I can order any model in the mail and it will show up and play perfectly.

I just got the Silver Sky this week. It's plays and sounds so good. And I was honestly looking to get a Fender for the longest. Sweetwater had financing deals and it was only 6 months for a Fender which made the payments high. The Silver Sky was a 24 months finance which made the payments $100 a month, very doable. Boy, I am glad I got the PRS. I own several guitars, but this one just feels so good, I wake up and crave playing it. It inspires me.

Having been through over 40 Suhrs / PRS combined, I can tell you that Suhr has the consistency thing down even better than PRS. It's mind-boggling how perfect every Suhr I've ever picked up has been.

I'm at the point in my life where i dont wanna "fight" my guitar. I used to have that feeling to string it a bit heavier/higher action for tone purposes, but why? Whats wrong with buttery? You dig? Besides the player makes the difference in tone anyway. Tone is 80% hands imho.

I think he means the guitar is expressive rather than difficult to play. These classic shape guitars have a really characteristic & organic sound about them. Really percussive & true. My Suhr T is like that. It translates what you're playing really well. I think it's made me into a better player really because I really zone in on the sounds i'm producing.

As I get older, big strings hurt my fingers: knuckles pop, and start hurting. The sexy of bigger strings is quickly gone when you have to crack a finger mid-Solo! Tony Iommi, BB King and Billy Gibbons use 7 gauge and I understand why! Plus these days you can get Cobalt strings that sound much bigger than normal strings ...

I don't think that's what he meant. Some guitars are great sounding but less dynamic, it's 0-30-90-100, and nothing in between. Some guitars allows you to get the inbetween stuff better but is harder to maximize. Makes sense with heavier strings and a flatter radius. I find at least on my classic S, suhrs modern pickups compresses much more, so you are always in that inbetween zone and need to push it a bit for the notes to be expressed. Much easier to play than a comparable Fender. I wonder how that Silver Sky will sound in real life, super intrigued.

ThemFuzzyMonsters I stupidly played a stiff bending guitar for yrs. and from over texting I got what’s called dequervein’s tendinitis. My thumbs stopped working and severe pain and zero help. So it was hard but a yr of no playing. Almost went crazy. But that wasn’t the end. Two, not one frozen shoulders I’m still recovering. I don’t think you recover 100%. And my fretting hand turned into a pretzel, all twisted. Knuckles swollen and red. And thumb starts aching again. It’s still not right but I refuse to give up. So got thinner strings. Mixed then with my 9-42’s. Hand recovered but thumb just aches all the time. Using Billy Gibbon’s strings. Tuned down and still play but not with the hands I used to. It’s something I have to live with. Sadly. Just when I got really good. I’ve been playing since I was a kid. Was ignorant. The teacher never mentioned this stiff bending issue. The store here refused to sell thinner strings. So that’s how I ended up after yrs of thinking I was taking great care of my hands.

Why do people say tone is in the hands? It's not really. Maybe the opposite of what you said. 10 - 20%. You dont tell who's playing guitar by their "tone". You know who's playing by their riffs, licks, phrasing, vibrato, and playing style. 90% tone comes from the amp and the pickups. You could give anyone SRVs setup and get that chimey Texas blues tone but what makes the player is their style of playing through what they're actually playing.

This came up on my feed just today and it's just a wonderful video to see. I like that they are almost both trying to sell each other their guitars ha ha. The silversky has more of a characteristic sound of its own but a little clunky i guess but the suhr sounds wonderful and an exception HSS guitar. While this guy does one of the best demos of the Silver Sky I've seen, I disagree that it doesn't feel like a Strat. 7.25 radius tiny frets is vintage, and there's nothing wrong w low action and playing like butter! PRS has some of the best setups in the industry, and I've played my share of Suhr. PRS also sounds more "stratty" to me.

I own two PRS guitars and thinking about a Suhr. Steep bucks. I’m also a Crook guitar guy. Specs to what asked for and less money. The other guitars are off the shelf stuff unless y’all wanna spend even more money. Some guitar companies seem to be geared to only the big venue players. Us small venue honky tonk players really are not what these guitar builders care about. THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR. That’s what drives them lol 😂

I’ve played hundreds of other guitars….shapes, brands, models, etc. and my preferences are two types….Fender Strats and Gibson SGs or SG shapes….BUT to this very day, I have yet to pick up and try a Suhr or the newer PRS JM. I have a Suhr Classic S HSS, and it is absolutely a great guitar. I probably spent less money just saving up and getting a Suhr rather than going for Fender like I’ve done in the past and modding it. I don’t feel like changing anything about the Suhr. The only Fender that comes close that I’ve tried is an American Pro HSS Strat, but when I bought one for myself, it had some problems in the finish and the bridge. That prompted me to try a Suhr, and I’m glad I did! I remember trying a Silver Sky briefly once, and it had one of the best 4th position tones I had ever heard. However, I did not like the knobs/plastics for some reason. I’d like to try one again some time!

Had a silver sky I own a suhr, being a busy father, the best choice for me was the suhr, feels so comfortable and precise. The silver sky, after not playing it for a while always had a small time to readjust back to it, and for me, I go through a shred tapping phase every year, the silver sky for that was a little more difficult. In other words, the Silver sky is great but no quiver killer. The Suhr way more versatile and a one guitar for it all.

I have a Fender John Mayer Stratocaster setup with Ernie Ball 11s and agree that it has to fight back a bit. It handles all I throw at it with an "is that all you've got" feeling. I'd really like to try a Suhr sometime. That bridge pickup has it.

They are "southern" and yet they are their own thing. I've lived in Mississippi for a while now, and they say I'm speaking with a northern accent. Like guitars, we all come at it from where we are.

Okay, so seeing this there is absolutely no doubt that the Suhr is the better strat. Like, by far. Not even close. BUT I don't think the point of the PRS is to be a strat or a super strat. It might be along the lines of a strat, it might've been inspired by a strat (next to other things) but it's something completely different. It's like he said in the beginning: it's not a strat but it's also not a PRS. It's something new. THAT is the point of this guitar. It's a new breed. And there are definitely not many people on this earth that are capable of creating something new in the world of guitars. Paul Reed Smith just showed us that he is one of those who can do that. Absolutely outstanding Paul, great job! Whoever wants the best strat money can buy: get the Suhr, hands down. Whoever has played everything on the market and is looking for something fresh and inspiring. Something that will make your fret hand feel like back in the day, when everything was new: by God, pick up the PRS.

I think the point is that it most definitely is trying to be a Strat. Otherwise why would it exist at all? There are plenty of other guitars in the PRS range that can create a reasonable single coil approximation, but remain distinct and different.

This just proves how subjective guitar judgments are. The Suhr is a fine instrument and I've played a few through the years but i have just bought the PRS because it spoke to me. It's so easy to pick holes in something when its a new product and I for one think its PRS over Suhr and anything else I've tried of this strat-style.. Great video. Thanks.

Have a PRS custom 22; the best sounding pickups out of all guitars I own-especially articulated on string bends where it sings best. However, I own 3 Suhr guitars; Alt-T Pro, Suhr Classic T Pro Humbucker - Single coil, Suhr Classic T. Bigger bodies on the Suhr vs PRS Custom 22’s smaller body that’s awkward to play while sitting as body sits lower; lacking comfort and playability of Suhr. Both Suhr Alt T Pro and Custom 22 have 5 way switches with dual humbuckers. Feel Suhr has greater sustain, volume over PRS 22. It’s just the string bends on the PRS Custom 22 are beautiful with wavers of sweet tones. But the PRS rotary switch has got to go as Suhr has a 5 way switch which is easier to manipulate. Ten top on PRS makes it a work of art. The Suhr Alt T Pro is a hollow body that’s more traditional and elegant in its own way. Suhr and PRS guitars are beautiful alternatives to Gibson and Fender guitars.

Prefer the clarity of the PRS. I like a strat where every position can do that super clear funk/R&B/Soul tone. I let the amp ad the bass back in if needed. The suhr seems more bassy and higher output which is definitely a tone with a purpose, but I feel like I hear less of the straty characteristics. These day's I find other brands get closer to the strat tone I have in my head then fender does.

I just bought a Suhr Classic S Paulownia AND a 2019 frost silver sky. I really enjoy both! there are different things to like about both. But two days into owning my Silver Sky I almost want to sell it because the frets are just so short. I’m dragging on the fretboard every bend and losing the string, even. I bought a 2019 for the sound of the higher output pickups that are in the ‘18 & ‘19 models.

Signature models are always difficult because the name on it sometimes constrains artists ability to embrace a product. Many artists online, seem to be hesitant to make the PRS Silver Sky their number 1, as they always have a guitar that happens to be a non-signature allowing themselves to have a more personalized relationship. John Mayer’s SRV strat removed the engraved plate to make it his own. It’s almost as if Hopkins modifying his Suhr made it personal for him. Now I am thinking of taking the Silver Sky plate and having it redone with my initials/signature. Just a thought. On a side note, I bought a singlecut SE (for 100$) at a second hand shop and fell in love with the craftsmanship and tone of PRS’s entry level guitar. After this, I was intrigued about PRS’s s-type guitar and began playing it at my local music shop. I loved the smaller fret size, body shape, left of center, and tone. This tone strikes a tuning fork in my heart, and while I know Fender and Suhr enthusiasts feel a bond and uniqueness to it (which is completely legit) - I connect with Paul Reed Smith’s nerdiness to detail and passion for instrument history. I wonder how Hopkin’s would have felt if the Silver Sky wasn’t attached to Mayer and was instead PRS’s s-type guitar? Great conversation, and great playing. I think if PRS hadn’t hooked me with their entry level efforts, I might have been looking at Suhr’s as well. That being said, I could not be happier with my Silver Sky.

Not a fair comparison IMHO. The Silver Sky is modelled after John Mayer's '63/64 Fender Strats, the Suhr Classic Pro is a totally different tool (modern neck radius, HSS config., tremolo bridge with dual steel knife edge pivot points ). If it had to be a Suhr/PRS comparison, the Scott Henderson Signature would have been more appropriate. It is also based after Henderson's vintage Fender Strats, and both guitars are fitted with the same three single-coil pickups (output wise) as well as a classic six screw vibrato bridge. Maybe next time...and don't forget to put a Thornbucker into the Silver Sky 😉. Great playing by both of you btw.

Neither is better nor worse, they are just completely different. I own a Suhr Classic Pro exactly like Marks except I’ve got the stock HB. I definitely agree with Mark about preferring a more modern neck. I was surprised the PRS could do a Major 4th bend without fretting out and so I stand corrected there but I’ll be keeping my Suhr.

G&L Fullerton Deluxe ASAT classic is still the greatest guitar I’ve ever touched. Like over thousands picked up. Still haven’t found a better production guitar. And for $2K it’s literally unbeatable. Better than 90% of the custom shops I see. When people ask for a guitar to do it all for electric style playing, I recommended that one 100/100 times. I’m quite certain there isn’t a better way to spend $2,000 on this planet.

I'm not so much a "strat" kinda guy as I am a "super-strat" kinda guy. My first electric was an Ibanez StageStar Super-Strat with HSS pickup config, and every guitar I've owned since has followed that sorta shape. My main guitar nowadays is a Jackson SLATTXMG Soloist. They're great value-for-money guitars and they play like a dream. Also probably the cheapest quality neck-thru guitar you could possibly find these days. Mine cost me only $700 CAD. I think there may even be a version that has non-EMG pickups in it, too, but I could be wrong about that one.

Played a Suhr for a week and thought it was very nice but not as great as people had hyped them to be - weirdly modern. JMSS is much better than I expected (wanted to hate it). Still love my Fender CS Strat a bit better but JMSS is one hell of a guitar.

The Suhr sounded throat-er not just on the hot bridge pick-up. Action and gage of strings can be easily changed to suit taste. The neck is a matter of taste so for $2200 must try both for a while.

I’ve played both and the prs is more comfortable to me and true the original strat sound wise. Being a suhr owner it has many nice features and better aesthetics that I prefer but the prs definitely sounds more like an old real strat

I have Suhrs and a PRS Silver Sky, I would say IMHO the Suhr feels a lot better in the hands than the SS, also the SCII eliminates the annoying 60 cycle which is very very noticeable in the SS. I would say the Suhr is a 9.5/10 while he SS is a 7/10.

I may be alone, but I prefer the sound of the silver sky by a pretty large margin here...and the comments on the action and tremolo are how I normally would set a strat anyway.

The Suhr seems a bit more hotter and compressed while the PRS seems much more dynamic and responds greater to the fingers. I suppose this makes the Suhr more forgiving. Both are good, but that thornbucker will make you like the "Strat" bridge.

My take: The PRS has a sweeter, more open sound, somewhat hi-fi and crystalline. Slightly scooped mids with sparkling lows and highs, tons of harmonics. Excellent note separation and detail. The Suhr is much more of a flamethrower. It has a soaring, singing tone with huge, focused mids and a tighter bass. Stronger fundamental with less prominent harmonics. It reminds me a lot of a vintage hardtail with slightly overwound pickups. Definitely a matter of taste, but I prefer the Suhr because it sounds more passionate and powerful. They actually sound great together.

The Suhr, at least through the rig on the left, sounds great, but it sounds nothing like a Strat, imo. The PRS sounds great and very Strat like. I like a higher setup, myself, but thought Mark did an outstanding job with the lower action. To be fair, the action on the PRS should have been set up to his liking, before the video.

I just sold my Music Man Jason Richardson in favor of the Silver Sky. I had a regular Music Man Cutlass as well but prefer PRS just because of the fatter neck. I do wanna try a Suhr or USA Schecter though, I tried a Tom Anderson but I wasn't too fond of it tonally.

Best strat is the one you make yourself from warmoth or musikraft parts....your choice of fretwire....tuners bridge, neck profile, pickups..you name it.....not only that but its also cheaper than any other strat with a logo on the headstock....call me crazy but the logo tax isnt worth it...

Sandpaper is your friend. As a furnituremkr, don't be afraid of making the guitar your own. 120 grit or higher.

Mark, you say you have to be "gentle" with the PRS, but that doesn't match what I see or hear. You play it aggressively and it sounds good. On another note ... how would the SS take to 11's
