Your analysis of the song was 100% accurate. The song is bigger than the performers. This is my favorite gospel song. It is a praise to God, which makes it even more powerful. You can tell this song gave Carrie and Vince a sense of humility, because they served the song and the audience; not themselves.

Check out Vince Gill's performance of "Go Rest High On That Mountain" at George Jones's memorial service. The emotions overtook Vince in the middle, and he let his guitar do the talking for him. It is one of the most amazing and human moments of music ever captured on film. Thanks for sharing this with everyone, Michael!

You're welcome! At the beginning of the video, you can see two other videos I've suggested in the past "Incurable Sadness" and "Goodbye World." Both great songs, by great musicians, with great, intimate delivery. I too have prayed for Michael as I believe we share some struggles. While I tend to favor depressing songs (or just those that allow us to express sadness), I couldn't shake the feeling that I needed to pause and recognize that God is good, He is great, and appreciate the talent that He gave all the musicians in the video too.

Soloing around the melody. Check out Vince and Patty Loveless performing Vince’s song “Go Rest High on That Mountain” at the George Jones memorial/funeral show. Vince is so choked and emotional he can’t sing the third verse so after the piano/violin bridge he solos around the melody on acoustic guitar while he composes himself for the last chorus. He’s an absolute master.

I got to meet Vince Gill at his mom's house on Christmas day in 1992. He was still married to his first wife Janice Gill (from Sweethearts of the Rodeo) and his daughter Jenny was 9 at the time. Jenny was such a sweet kid (now a really great woman). Janice stayed upstairs and didn't even come down to say hello. I thought that was crappy, but whatever. Vince lived up to his nickname "Sweet Pea" (from George Jones). One of the nicest celebrities you could ever meet.

Thank you for recognizing and respecting the fact this performance could never be replicated. As an agnostic, even I have to question if God himself had anointed this superb example of his love for his people. My hat is off to you my friend. My husband is a drummer, and he always says (to all musicians) it's not always about what you play. Sometimes it's about what you DON'T play! 😊😊

2:55 THIS is a statement more profound than even you may realize. The song IS the MESSAGE and the Melody IS the song. without the melody the message is lost. And a song without a message really has no melody and vice versa ... what a shame it's too long for a bumper sticker or a T-shirt. .. But true just the same. Michael, Love your passion and insight. Both of these artists have a relationship with the message and the song.5:00 Carrie displays it from her heart.
