Ok, you asked for it! Some background on the Japanese scene: Japan has had an active all-girl metal scene since at least 1981. This is a starter list of all-female or (in four cases, mixed, female-led) metal, punk, hard-rock and post-rock bands. It's mostly alphabetical, except for the first three, which are at the top of the list for historical reasons. They set the table for the explosion of Japanese female hard-rock, punk and metal bands. Show-Ya (the original female J-metal band, founded in 1981, before Metallica-this is from their 30th (!) anniversary concert-and they are still touring): kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXvCZnqsaNt5oLM Shonen Knife (The world’s first bubblegum punk band, founded in 1981. They have done several world tours. They also perform as a Ramones tribute band called Osaka Ramones): kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWqvhp-Pr7ScjdU Destrose (This band was never stable, but has become almost mythic in Japanese metal history, because so many great bands spun out of Destrose, including Lovebites--you will recognize the drummer and bassist): kzbin.info/www/bejne/baCal56qqKeqh8k Aldious (Glamorous and kick-ass rockers-one of the first generation all-girl metal bands, along with Destrose) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZfOe4dmp9eUY5o Asterism (not all female, but will melt your face off- the guitarist Haruka Noma is off the charts talented and still a teen-ager) kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5fbfpxmd91nrpI Band-Maid (OK, there are 90+ great songs by them. Here is a live clip): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHnTpningqaWesk Bridear (Heavy, technical-and the tiny bassist also growls): kzbin.info/www/bejne/goKsdaSrmaySerM Cyntia (Another early one, hard, heavy, but with prog and symphonic touches) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJ_LgJWeas6Sabc Disqualia (Destrose spin-out, featuring Narumi, one of the best guitarists of this generation) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y36Yq3WBp7l9iMk Doll$Boxx (insane mix of metal, electropop, and god-knows what else; a collaboration between Fuki and Gacharic Spin ) kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6aVq2eLm56HncU existTtrace (one of the earliest, progressive, technical, some death-metal and goth touches) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hauUfalujax1fJI Fate Gear (super-group, one of the Destrose spinouts-this single video is one of the best in this list): kzbin.info/www/bejne/qn20k6algLaBY5I Gacharic Spin (founded in 2009 by a group of high-school friends; technical, cover a range from punk-pop to heavy metal and progressive) Here is their first video, with original singer Armmy (d. 2015): kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJfdeqdoZcSrjsk Gallhammer (Death punk; this is from their 2007 UK/Europe tour): kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJe3mqyFhJahkKc Galmet (straight-up death metal, but in prom dresses) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp_Zo4KCmrenY6s Ganglion (Metal with a hint of electronica) kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2rNZadpgthgick Lovebites (most recent official MV, even better than Shadowmaker IMO): kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn2plp9_bpiJoa8 Mardelas (another spin-off from Destrose) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZWbgWqtidOKgNU Mary's Blood (The first major Destrose Spin-out: Saki murders her guitar without breaking any nails): kzbin.info/www/bejne/g32wY6iki5Werbc Mutant Monster (Punk-pop): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJWZqqCDh5ljhLc Narumi (solo prog-rock composition-change of pace) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYPcdJR-n9x8nc0 Nemophila: Supergroup of Mary's Blood guitarist Saki, ex-Lipstick vocalist Mayu, ex-Disqualia guitarist Hazuki, ex-Hölderlins bassist Haraguchi-san, and ex-Soramimi drummer Muratatam. kzbin.info/www/bejne/opmQlYmCgLVmZ5Y 54 Nude Honeys (early Japanese punk, from around 1990-they toured the UK and Europe): kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHnRe4alfLNog80 Otoboke Beaver (thrash punk): kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJy6l3mOo7Gjj8k Rie aka Suzaku (instrumental guitar) kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2e9Y3p6arikhNU Telecide (Metalcore, aggressive and melodic at the same time) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZbUXmqQeNGofMU Tricot (Post-progressive math-rock, very technical, crazy time signatures and polyrhythms) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpClkHqXodh9qKc Sonic Lover Reckless (Special project of Miyako Watanabe, one of the two insane Lovebites guitarists): kzbin.info/www/bejne/eom9XqSerclkjKs Unlucky Morpheus (Female lead (Fuki) and violin (Jill). This band is a deep well unto itself, they cross many subgenres of metal; Fuki and Jill also do other projects and Fuki is lead for at least two other bands including Doll$Boxx, above): kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGnMkISehMymgdk Wagakki Band (Folk-Metal fusion band, all jedi-level musicians, half of them play traditional Japanese instruments and the other half play standard metal instruments) This song was originally written for a virtual (AI) singer, referred to as a Vocaloid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2PQloqhjNaWY6s There are many more, and some of the other folks here will undoubtedly add their favorites (I can think already of a few obvious ones like Scandal, Kakumei/Trident, Brats, etc.)

Yes, it's connected to the story--they were commissioned to do the opening song for an anime. Here's the way I think about them: Imagine, somewhere in the galaxy, a race of benevolent beings who watch over us. They see our world falling into evil and chaos, and so, to help us, they create a team of superheroes and send them to Earth to save us. These heroes are disguised as beautiful young women dressed in white, and instead of using violence or force, they use music to battle the darkness. That is this band, and no description you’ve ever heard could prepare you for the real thing. Ok, subscribing.

Hey! Yeah this is a brand new song written for the anime VLADLOVE. I love the gothic vibe of this one, these ladies cant stop amazing me. Miyako (the brunette) is a big fan of classical music like Rachmaninoff or Chopin, and she has said in interviews that being a classically trained pianist has helped her with Metal because like you said she also says that classical and metal are close together. You will see her playing piano more in other songs and because she is the main composer for the band you will see the inspirations she brings to their songs. If you want some thrash metal try "Break the Wall", "Hammer of Wrath" both Live from Five of a Kind 2020. Great reaction! They composed this song as a title music for Vladlove, an anime about a female vampire. The director also made the animes Patlabor and Ghost in the Shell, both are already legendary, so it seems kind of a bigger deal. Edge of the World is probably their song that best shows off the full range of what they can do, covering the gamut from piano ballad to hard rock, to power medal, with beautiful transitions between each movement within the song. It's a real vocal showcase as well. I also really like Miyako's extended piano intro to the live version of their song Empty Daydream. One of the reasons why J-ROCK has developed is anime. OP and ED are always required for animation, and being selected there will be a powerful appeal to the younger generation. Since the OP time is limited, features and skills that can be understood in one shot are required in a short time. Anime changes four times a year, so it's the same as having a national tournament four times a year in Japan.

The director of this anime is a landlord. Anime directors such as Ghost in the Shell and Innocence. This is MAMORU OSH II. His name has gained a solid position worldwide. MAMORU OSHII is a genius. Following his anime offer, LOVEBITES should have stopped all activities and focused on this task. It's like getting an offer from Spielberg.

They changed their style for this song quite a bit i think. This song has all the strappings of modern j-metal song (I've been listening to Japanese music fore 20+ years quite a lot and i'm a musician myself) and all the hallmarks of "Anime opening song"... I hope this isn't going to change their overall style to this direction, since what they have is very good in itself :)

I still need to explore their discography to understand more about their overall style, but I see why they would do that. At least it's still very high quality music!

Again a great reaction GG! I had only seen the new video today myself, but I appreciated your insights. By the way, the Dean guitarist - Miyako - ia also an accomplished pianist and probably played the piano/keys parts of this song. Looking forward to some more - try Epilogue, I am sure you will like it as it has acoustic guitar, piano, beutiful singing, followed up by some heavy stuff - enjoy kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHjdlaami6mNm7c

You keep mentioning and comparing these ladies with dragon force when fact these ladies are so much better than they are and the guys from dragon force quickly recognized this. please stop say that they are influenced by dragon force because they are not. these ladies did some extensive research of the rock bands of the '70s and '80s consisting of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden's power metal and heavy metal sounds to Megadeth, Metallica, and slayer thrash metal, influenced of Gary Moore and Micheal Schenker, a hint of the Scorpions and so on, no dragon force. Lovebites is a very diversified band in many styles and genres and dragon force is only one style. you have only heard one song from what I gather and you have already jumped into the newest mv, I strongly suggest for you to an extensive reaction to Lovebites and many reactors has done especially my buddy Mike from WindleEffect who did 19 songs all together within a three week span. The song you just heard was written and composed by Miyako for an Anime series called "Vladlove", so many bands they could have asked to do this and the producers wanted Lovebites how awesome is this, these beautiful ladies are very underrated but are being recognized by others for the amazing writing skills they possess and the incredible lyrics by Asami.

Thanks for taking the time to write this. I've actually never said they were influenced by DragonForce (which I'm honestly not a fan of), just pointed out that 'When Destinies Align' sounds similar to them: and that's simply because they share all of those bands as influences :) Already by listening to this one, it's clear they their range is much wider, spanning into thrash and more classic/symphonic influences instead of being more restricted to power metal. Great song!
