An oxymoron is two words that do not go together. Southern rock is redundant, because rock music came from the south. The southern rock era began with this band. It was a combination of pretty much all styles of music. What happened at this time is the musicians, the studios and the record companies were, for the most part all in the south. And I was a young guitar player growing up in this time, so that was pretty cool. Everybody wanted to play like Dickey Betts and Duane Allman.

I'm really thrilled that the young generation is "discovering" the Allman Brothers and other great artists of the 60's and 70's, but at the same time it's saddening to know that today's youth weren't raised on this stuff like my kids were. What is being passed off as "music" today can no way compare with the music from that Golden Era. I know. I was there from the beginning. Amazingly my friend, I still get the same feelings hearing this 50 years later as you do hearing it for the first time. No one will remember Britney Spears, J-Lo, Justin Bieber or any those other "entertainers" 50 years from now, but in 2069, they will STILL be listening to the Allman Brothers! I wanted to list more of the new "artists", but they are so blah I can't even remember their names. Keep on discovering! You'll never regret it!

Gregg Allman was 21 when "Whipping Post" was recorded. But he does sound like somebody who's seen it all, doesn't he? It's worth it to study up on Duane Allman; he died when he was 24, so all his legacy of musical greatness happened in about a four year period; from playing on Clapman's Derek tracks, to Wilson Pickett's "Hey, Jude...." ABB is classic and iconic, but there was a LOT of sessions work you might miss if you don't dig deep.
