I love the comments describing what you’re hearing and feeling in this video. While still remaining objective in your opinions and description. It really helps viewers relate based on what we’re hearing through YT and seeing in your reactions to playing the guitars. I wish all such review/comparison videos were so communicative. It also helps me personally validated some of my own opinions on such topics. It’s great to hear you react in tandem with my own thoughts for future reference. Plus it’s just good to know I’m not alone in my own similar reactions at guitar stores 😊. A great watch thank you👍👍

Nev is right! When referring to the Gibson Custom Shop, VOS stands for Vintage Original Spec. Vintage Original Sheen is what Epiphone calls the finish on the new "Inspired by Gibson Custom" models.

I trust Neville's judgement because of hearing his ex personal Goldtop on TPS frequently. That being said narrowing down a good Les Paul type by throwing pedegree and or money as a criterium at it is likely a fail to my experience. And this comparison proves it in a way if you ask me. I own and have owned single cuts from entry level to top end. First of all: if you want a Les Paul, buy a Les Paul. The one that says Gibson on it. I'm not coming from brand loyalty, I'm just sharing my experience and this includes the painful f.... up that aquiring Gibsons with major flaws can be. (tilted screwed in ABR 1 posts on a Custom Shop anybody?!?) I own a Nik Huber Redwood, different party on paper, but not really. I can hear the Häussel characteristics in the Orca in the vid as I can hear it in my Redwood. Surely fabulous guitars, superb build quality, shiny spec sheet. Top level Les Paul sound? Not really. Next of my contenders is a PRS Mc Carty single cut that I also still own. I bought that one as a 'better Gibson'. This model says Mc Carty on it for a reason. And again fabulous guitar, everything you would expect from a back then 5k PRS. Top level Les Paul sound? Not really. I found a used R8 that solved the 'Les Paul problem' for me. After long searches, fails and silly investments along the way. It's the best guitar I own and that's coming from a 'Strat guy'. So Gibson after all for me, I really tried to avoid it. A good Les Paul is a rare beast, be open to not pick the monster top or the monster deal. Be critical, if you find the one you'll know it.

Love the LP’s.. Ol’ Les got it right, right from the go, which is evidenced by the many builders who consider it the benchmark, and seek to improve upon it. All said, I will never understand why people would want to buy a new guitar that looks beat up! Just me. Appreciate the post. Carry On!!!

To be specific: in some instances they are separated into 3 Versions of 60s necks. Where as the V3 (Latest produced original LP standard bursts) is really thin, even in comparison to the V1 and V2 necks.

People can dump on Gibson all they want, but custom shop lp’s are absolute tone monsters through and through. Every time i convince myself its a rational idea to sell my r9, i plug it in and come to my senses

Agreed. I've played loads. 'normal' Gibson's, yes, there have been and still are some dodgy ones. But the same goes on with fender. I've never played a bad custom shop Gibson, or a bad custom shop fender. And I've probably played close to a hundred of them. Both custom shops make fantastic instruments.

Love these videos but I feel like this one’s a bit off point, Gibson Custom Shop doesn’t *only* do reissues, they also make enhanced versions of their guitars and incredible M2M guitars which you said they didn’t / can’t do.. and on the other side of the coin, there are other boutique guitars that are much closer to a reissue/replica than the ones compared here. Still interesting as an 1 vs 2! But there are many 1a/b/c/d’s out there worth comparing on both sides of the reissue and modern spectrum.

Jamie here. Thanks for the viewpoints - we made the video a little opportunistically this time because we had some great ‘59 themed guitars to hand when we arrived and we decided to explore some of those interesting modern / traditional contrasts just because it seemed to good too pass by. So there’s an element of spontaneity in play here that we usually don’t just go with - as per our more planned-out Ultimate Shootout vids. But I think it still shines a light on some interesting topic areas. To your point about the range of things Gibson CS can actually make I suppose we were speaking quite generally when we said that in the field of making ‘59 style LPs, Gibson is more confined to tradition than independent makers - I think that’s broadly true. However, as you point out I’m sure they can and have made guitars that lean on the ‘59 tradition but also tweak it. But I think it’s probably fair to say adherence to period correct detail is *generally* what most people come to Gibson for if we’re talking about ‘59s. Happy to do a fuller rematch along the lines you suggest in future though! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment though.

So, what we are saying is there really is the difference in sound is due to pickups and not 'tone' wood. There were two differences in tone that I heard through my monitors...playing with fingers and playing with a pick. They are all very beautiful guitars. I've got two les Pauls (standards) and they both sound different, they have different pickups and I use them for different situations. Would love a Huber...stunning!
@guitarist
@guitarist 18 күн бұрын
@@TheFatstrat79 that’s perhaps a little too reductivist - all four guitars sounded somewhat different to each other and varying pickup spec is part of that but it would be overstating things to say that was the only factor. Every guitar is a nexus of subtle and less subtle influences on tone and general performance - though pickups are obviously an important differentiator.

Why in 2024, can’t we specify our fretwire choice? Fender let you. It’s comical. I don’t know about the rest of you. But I don’t play the top. I want an instrument with jumbo fretwire. The fact that Gibson can’t offer that means my money will be going to Heritage, who at least give you the option.

These “high end’ guitars make me gringe. Just toys for people with more money than sense… and to be honest good luck to them. After 30 years and countless guitars from all makers and you eventually you realise that all the marketing BS that has to follow with expensive guitars to try and justify their existence gives you very little as a player. The cost of these is not a reflection on how ‘good’ they are, it’s down to the time (wages) and expensive materials. Doesn’t make them magically better. A sound guitar that’s well built and setup correctly is all you need. Pickups can be swapped at will. It really is all nonsense.
