Hey everybody! I'm disabled (have cerebral palsy, can't plug in which is a long story in itself) and I just play for myself, but I've been trying these methods since yesterday and I'm already easily picking up on more than I expected to. Don't ever give up!

I'm an old man ,79 in a bit under 3 months. I played guitars for years but always left it then pick it up again and start new. I love finger picking and not crazy about strumming but not many songs I like where strumming is required. Don't worry about being disabled. Just play, strum o to finger pick. I am stuck as I don't know where to go next, so now I am really floundering. My issue is in transitioning, and after 9 months in I still have major pains (plus I gave myself CTS, along with bad arthritis), but I do, at least, know these chords: A/Am/C/D/E/Em/G I can't find a single instructor I am clicking with, and I am not sure where to go next.

This lesson is caged (because caged is just 'there') but it's wise not to 'think' caged when soloing. Caged is built on octave shapes and visualizing octaves won't scramble your brain as will caged in all it's complexity while soloing. I've been using this for years and use this approach. For soloing this will take you far. For locating triads for rhythm playing and somewhat in soloing I still think caged and it's related barre chords up the neck, each barre chord containing multiple triads. Great lesson. So much to learn.

BE Guitar. The pattern is the "G" pattern in the CAGED system. Starting at the 5th fret, yes it is A minor, but the pattern is "G".
@neilrobinson7615
@neilrobinson7615 4 жыл бұрын
I thought the CAGED system only shows the 3 chord tones, 1st, 3rd & 5th, not the 5 tones of a Pentatonic scale?
@samstamos427
@samstamos427 4 жыл бұрын
@@neilrobinson7615 They are Pentatonic scale patterns.
@neilrobinson7615
@neilrobinson7615 4 жыл бұрын
@@samstamos427 @Sam Stamos How does a 3 note system liked CAGED become a 5 note scale? The G shape chord of the CAGED system at the 5th fret 6th string with the root note on the 6th string has the notes A, C# & E which makes it an A major chord. The notes of Am Pentatonic are A, C, D, E & G. In the video it says all the licks are based off the G Pentatonic scale which is G, A, B, D, E. Lick 1 notes: G, A, C, D & D#. Lick 2 notes: A, C, D, D# & E. Closer to Am. Lick 3 notes: C, D, E & G which is closer to Am. As you can see, all these licks only use a maximum of 3 notes of G Pentatonic. A very confusing lesson with what could be considered incorrect information.
@samstamos427
@samstamos427 4 жыл бұрын
@@neilrobinson7615 Neil. The CAGED system is merely a mnemonic device. I didn't really use it myself, rather I just memorized the patterns. Your reference to a 3 note system seems to reflect upon a chord consisting of a triad, thus 3 notes. What the CAGED system does is to try frame "chord shapes" on the fretboard, and to be honest, some people just don't see it. Let's take the "G" pattern for example. With the index finger on all of the strings at the 5th fret, run through the Am pentatonic scale. The pattern appears to form a G chord. And this pattern is movable up and down the fretboard. So move it down so that the index finger is now behind the nut, and you'll see that the pattern resembles a "G" chord in addition to other notes that are not in the triad. And so when you play the E String, you'll play 0 3, A string 0 2, D string 0 2, G string 0 2, B & e strings each 0 3. That pattern is the "G" that's being referenced to in CAGED, and there is actually the E minor pentatonic scale since the root is the open E. And, keeping your hand there, start on the G and run through to the next octaves, that's the is the G major pentatonic scale. All of the other patterns have the same idea. It's the pentatonic pattern, not the triad notes of the chord. Hope this helps. Sam.
@neilrobinson7615
@neilrobinson7615 4 жыл бұрын
@@samstamos427 I understand the CAGED system very well thanks. The root note of the "G" shape chord is the ring finger, not the index. Using the G shape chord with your index finger barring the 5th fret will not include the note A. It is a C chord.
