Thanks. I’m 51 and just getting time to start and practice guitar. Always wanted to do it but never had time. I don’t know how many videos I have watched regarding CAGED. I think for a lot of us, it's easy to finger c-a-g-e- and d, but it gets way harder when you have to make those shapes with your other fingers. That's where it gets hard for us intermediate/beginners, especially when you're already and old man.
@daan5361
@daan5361 Жыл бұрын
Don’t worry about that. These moved up D, C and G shapes are not very useable and I don’t know anyone using them that way. It’s just for understanding. Once you modify those shapes into triads they become very useful.

Don't concentrate on scales so much as on the chords and their arpeggios. Using the CAGED SYSTEM, find which range you want, and a nearby place where all the chords are gathered tight. Compose your lead using the triads of the chords in the progression which are all right there within a 4 or 5 fret span. You will notice more melodic phrases.

I'm kind of dyslexic or something I think, and in 35 years of playing never could learn to read music. I understood very little of the way it works. Then I kept forgetting the notes and chords on the neck after learning them. But I have never given up trying to learn.
@oldschoolfunkster1
@oldschoolfunkster1 2 жыл бұрын
Same here. Over the years I've learned to mix more notes in my chords. All by ear. Never took a class. Found it very confusing and never caught on. It was like trying to read Chinese. I never caught on to shredding. It only sounds like speed to me. I find single notes more artistic sounding and have feeling to them. To me shredding is just to impress OTHER guitarists.
@improvewitherror
@improvewitherror 2 жыл бұрын
Same with me, this only half makes sense to me., can't seem to piece part of it together. I have been play for about twenty years and have lots of guitars but I have to just play by ear, I can't remember remember songs or scales, I'm okay with a lot of chords but that's about it. But I still have fun and love writing and recording songs.
@oldschoolfunkster1
@oldschoolfunkster1 2 жыл бұрын
@@improvewitherror ... There are some well known guitarists that are in the same boat as we are, so I don't feel too bad. I love playing guitar. I have about 100 guitars. All imports including basses and acoustic. I can jam with seasoned bands. But I just never decided to read music. One reason I lost an opportunity playing in Las Vegas. They liked my style. But I had to know how to read music because I'd be going to different bands. I can decipher almost any song fast or get it almost right. All by ear. Even though I'm not in a band, I still find playing guitar therapeutic.
@oldschoolfunkster1
@oldschoolfunkster1 Жыл бұрын
@Mark Seymour ... I understand your viewpoint, and I wish I could shred myself. I admire guys who have mastered it, but as a musician AND a music lover I cannot decipher the musical quality other than the speed. Super shredder music is like trying to listen to what a fast talking auctioneer is saying. Don't get me wrong, shredding has its place in music, but when it's overused, it only sounds like noise. I would say a very high number of the population does not hear shredding music, thus I'm sure they will never make a #1 hit on the charts. For example, I consider Eddie Van Halen a master shredder, but he knew how to make his music very melodic. Santana, on the other side of the coin, is not a shredder, but he's a master of how to bring out the beauty of one notes in melodies. Just sustaining one note makes a song even greater. So what I'm saying is, simpler but melodic playing, resonates more with people that are not musicians. If shredding sounds all over the place to me as a guitarist, I can image what it sound to a regular person. I've been to band auditions where I'd compete against shredders. All I would think was dang! I'm not getting the gig. But I usually would, due to my style. Believe me, I wish I could at least sound like a shredder, but I'm content in just adding to the songs personality.

Just got my copy and am stoked to go at this. You really did a nice job of making this thing decipherable. I’ve had guitars for nearly three decades, but I never went after any theory. 3 months ago I committed to an hour of focused playing every day. I’ve stuck with it and I’m now listening to my favorite songs and grabbing rhythm and lead sections. I even bought a bass. This CAGED thing has eluded me. It’s been frustration to listen to others explain it, but listening to your explanation flipped the switch. Awesome video! You have a gift for teaching. I’m going to check out your other stuff as I keep going. At 46 I thought I was probably too old and stubborn to learn much, but these three months have been awesome and now it looks even better! I’ve been playing guitar over 40 years. I’m a great rhythm picker & player. Made lots of $$ playing for myself & others on records. But I have NEVER been able to master bar chords, which is KEY in this little trick, as well as others like it. This is a cool little thing to master though. Of course there are TONS of things you CAN do without “barring”, but it’s best if you learn to bar from the beginning so you don’t have to try and break bad habits trying to learn new things later. Making things like this super easy to pick up.
