Fast guitarists like to boast about playing 20 notes per second. At those speeds, in the time it took you to read this, they could have played hundreds of notes! Manowar bassist Joey De Maio and guitarists Michael Angelo Batio has just released a new video where they play 30 notes per second. This is super human speed. Can I do it too? Let's find out.

The problem is that they don't pass the fraud check. This isn't anywhere close to 30 notes per second, and it's embarrassing that a guitarist as acclaimed as MAB would attempt to pass his playing off as if he could.

Being creative and original on guitar!!!! 🙂😀😃😀🙂

They're not even breaking 20 notes per second, never mind 30. Just because a couple of old coots play in unison with a sequencer backing track and make a wild claim in the title of a video, doesn't mean they actually got anywhere near it. All you need to do is slow the clip down to 25% and then tap out each note using a bpm detector.

Fast forward, I am more interested these days in stuff like Meshuggah's odd rhythmic arrangements and the stuff Mike Dawes does. That's when I want to listen to something extreme. Mostly though... I traded my guitars and gear in for drums in 1983, couldn't play guitar worth a shit after 2 years, picked up the drums like a tick on a bear's left nut.

MAB has been legendary on guitar for years, I wish he got the gig before that other fella. MAB though, one of theee cleanest players since the late 80s(?) and a cool dude to talk to.

On a side note, you can easily play 24 notes super easy, just slide your finger up to the 12th fret and back lol

"Panic Station" by Allan Holdsworth. That's where they stole that riff, it's the solo intro lick, except he does it twice as long. 40 years ago.

"...while I play noisy, horrible chromatic shit no matter what key we're in, that is 50% me sliding my index finger up the neck and that I need to run through a MIDI modeller (on top of tying two rags around the neck of my guitar) to sound slightly less unbearable than through a conventional guitar signal"

Does anyone know what's up with the neck of the bass guitar? How is it so skinny?

Why would he have a wide fretboard if he is using a pick? He plays chords and stuff given it's a one guitarist band.

I've tried that Paul Gilbert thing of putting picks onto a cordless drill, and it know that I couldn't put it in the highest speed or I'd break the strings, so I checked how many rpm I could safely use on the drill before doing some damage, and even using the drill I max out at around 34 notes per second. Getting 30 without assistance is mind bowling.

I've always suspected "piccolo basses" exist only for the situation where the bass player in a band wants to play some guitar, but the guitar player won't let them, so they have to pretend they're actually still playing a bass and not ever admit that it's a four-string guitar.

Playing faster will benefit Manowar financially. Now they can play a full show in half of the time. So they can squeeze more shows on their tour. It will also have an effect on the Manowar fans. a: What are you doing back at home? I thought that you were going to a Manowar concert. b: They played all their set in 5 minutes so I came back home

Hi Max, I am actually a pianist and managed to play 28 notes per second, and spent like 5 minutes of practicing on this. It does not mean I am an extreme virtuoso, but it seems this speed in not that unreachable, at least on my instrument. If you are interested I can easily post a video how I do it

I used to play up to 27 nps, when I was playing Impellitterri when I was younger, now I am satisfied with 24 per second (both linear and repetitive sequences)... in all honesty I am fine with 155 bpm 32nds small triplets since I play hair metal, not metalcore or death metal or something ...

I counted the notes. 15 per second. But since they are 2 guys playing 15 notes per second, I guess it is technically 30 notes per sec.
