This video is truly a fantastic learning tool! I am just about to purchase the GT-1, to replace my venerable old Line 6 PodPro, which I have had in my recording desk for quite a few years. I was mainly looking for a lighter, more portable effects pedal system that I can play through my Blackstar amp now that I'm going to be playing live again, so I am pleased to be told how to be able to use the COSM feature through the amp, but also to patch in the GT-1 into my mixer and monitors in my home recording studio as well. Thanks for your great series, and now I'm going to watch the rest of your videos NOW!

Indeed, the GT-1 is great, and it comes will full Boss quality - excellent! I enjoy mine as well, and I've used it live a lot of times, and it sounds great straight to the PA, using the onboard COSM preamps and cabinets. You let me know if you need anything, Jim. But when I go to some venues to play live, the PA staff said the volume of my guitar was incredibly low. (I use line/phone output➡️DI Box➡️mixer in the house)
@GuitarNTabs3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. That could be because of two reasons. 1. The Output Level is set too high. You adjust this with knob 3 under the LCD screen. 2. If you're listening to music, backing tracks, etc. when connected to the PC, then have a look at the USB menu, found when you press the Menu button. There's a parameter for what comes into the GT-1, especially if it's connected to a PC. I think it all comes down to the Output level, which I mentioned. It's probably set too high or too low. Give that a try, and see what happens. P.s. - Maybe you hit a switch on your DI?? That's also possible.

How to have great sound with my fender hot rod best out put and set it because it sound like crapppe i dont know how plz help me
@GuitarNTabs5 ай бұрын
Hi there, The very first thing to think about would be the use of your Fender amp, with the GT-1. If you mainly want to use your Fender Hot Rod for amp tones, both clean, overdriven, etc. then you should turn off the GT-1's PREAMP block, and save the adjustment. This has to be done for every patch you want to use. Also, it's important that you set the GT-1's Output Select to "Combo Amp". With this setup you're using the GT-1 for its effects only. However, you can use the GT-1's preamps, if you wish to, for example by connecting the Left mono out from your GT-1 to your Hot Rod's PWR In socket. This way you'll bypass your Fender's preamp section, only leaving the speaker to output the sound. Make sure to set the Output Select to "Combo Amp Return" in this case, and activate the PREAMP block. In some cases, when using an amplifier with the GT-1, like in your case, you can experiment with the PREAMP block, by turning off the SP Type parameter. This way you can use the Preamp models as an "extra" overdrive/distortion effect, but the results may vary. I personally wouldn't use the Preamps like that. Try it out, and please do let me know how it goes. Best regards.

Sounds like I should use the return of my orange crush 112 combo amp. I wonder what I should use for my Roland JC 40 (2 x 10) Probably combo return ? Maybe use the JC 120 return for this amp as well ? Finally what setting for going to a powered speaker ?
@GuitarNTabs5 жыл бұрын
Hey there. Thanks for getting in touch, I appreciate it. Sure, the return of an amp is always a good place for a multi effects unit. Especially if you want to use the multi effects' onboard preamp and cabinet models. If you want to use the GT-1's onboard preamp and cabinet models, then connect it to the L and R return jacks on the JC40. The sweet part on the JC amps is that the return of the Effects Loop is stereo, because of the two speakers. So you can run the GT-1 in Stereo, using the L and R effects loop return jacks. I would recommend that. Set the Output Select to JC120 return, and see what that does. If you're not happy, then try the Combo Amp Return. For headphones, studio monitors, speakers, PA, Mixers, etc. you should set it to Line/Phones. This also enables the onboard preamp and cabinet models on the GT-1. I hope this helps. Let me know. All the best.

Hi there, Sam. Merry Christmas and thanks for your comment and question. No, the Output Select is set once, and if you then need to change it, then you have to do it manually, to match your equipment. Hi. Very nice informative video. One question: Is there any way to only use the GT-1 time based effects (the ones you will use after any preamp section) BUT using the preamp stage from a real tubes amp? So not using the GT-1 preamp or OD/Distortion effects at all. Something like: guitar goes into front of tube amp, a cable from SEND of Amp goes into the mono input of GT-1 and then a cable from GT-1 mono output goes to RETURN of the tube Amp? OR will this require a more expensive multi effects unit that offers SEND-RETURN? I'm using my GT-1 with studio monitors so can't test this setup. I'd like to buy a tube amp which I know I can use as a speaker using your explanation but would like to know if this option is also possible. Thanks for your answer !
@GuitarNTabs4 жыл бұрын
Hi there - thank you, I really appreciate it! Yes, you simply connect the GT-1 via your amp's effects loop Return and Send, that way the time-based effects will be placed properly, and from there you can easily use your amp's clean and overdriven channels, etc. It wouldn't require anything special, and the multi effect doesn't need its own effects loop, so you're all good. Your connection seems valid, and should work, yes. I would go for it, and see if it's something you like - a good tube amp will work well with the GT-1, for sure. Cheers.

Will the Line/phones activate a cab simulator? And lets say output return have it deactivated?
@GuitarNTabs2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Thanks for your comment and question. In the Boss GT-1 Parameter Guide PDF, on Page 12, regarding the Speaker Type, it says "*1 This is enabled when the OUTPUT SELECT parameter is set to LINE/PHONE" So when setting the Output Select to Line/Phones you enable the Speaker Type (Cabinet options). So in theory, the Speaker Type should not be activated, when Output Select is set to Combo Amp Return, or any of the other return options. However, do check this, because on almost all default presets, the preamp block is activated, so it might be stored in that patch, that the Speaker Type is activated... I hope this helps. Cheers.

Hi there, Magnus. Thanks for your comment and question. I greatly appreciate it. Your questions is actually very valid, and important too, so no worries. @@toddmerriott6901 - Hi there. Well, there are certain things to ensure, once connected through a PA, using the Line/Phones Output Select. Always check that the channel settings on the mixer is somewhat neutral. All channel EQ should be set fairly neutral, and make sure the channel's gain knob isn't set too high, or engaged at all. Also, if connected to the PA in stereo, make sure the two channels on the mixer is set to pan one channel Left and the other Right. Then you need to dial in your tone, using the GT-1's onborad PREAMP-block. Select your desired preamp model and tweak it. A hint, change the Speaker Type, that will open things up a bit. I generally like the 1x12" or 2x12". Keep in mind that uncontrolled gain and volume stages quickly will ruin any good tone/patch, so make sure to keep an eye on the levels - also when adding in new effects.

Thanx, great explanation! Just a question, which seems to keep me bothering... Do you have to set the ‘SP type Off’ in the Preamp settings, when using ‘Stack Return’? I know it says in the manual the speaker type is meant to be bypassed, when other than ‘Line/Headphones’ is selected in the output menu. But it sounds rather different with ‘Stack Return’ setting (and using it the way it’s meant to be used with that setting - into amps’ return)) while toggling the SP Type from ‘Original’ to ‘Off’
@GuitarNTabs5 жыл бұрын
Hey there, kuzWich! Thanks for your comment and question. When connecting through an amp's effects loop return you want the GT-1's onboard preamps/cabinets to be turned ON. The idea of connecting through the effects loop return is to bypass your own amplifier, only using its speaker(s) and use the GT-1 for both its effects and preamps/cabinets. So select your preamp model on the GT-1 and turn its SP TYPE ON 😊 I hope this helps. Let me know. Cheers.
@kuzWich5 жыл бұрын
GuitarNTabs, thanks! 4 your reply! Well it certainly does sound a notch fuller with SP TYPE ON. But I still find it rather confusing, this implementation... I’d SEEM most logic to switch it OFF, since we already have a real deal of the Cab connected to the Amp. So running ‘two’ cabs (and one’s in front of the real power amp, if you follow me;)) looks strange to me, to say the least... Now I suppose the tech guys at Roland implemented a smart sort of level/eq compensation at the Output setting, since it’s the most handy way to use it Global wise across all of the presets. Just wish the manual could have been more informative.

@@kuzWich - Hey there! You're very welcome, I'm always happy to help out. Correct, you still have the cabinet/speaker(s) running on your own external amplifier, but it shouldn't make that much of a difference... Indeed, the good guys at Roland might very well have sorted all that out, regarding the Output Select and the way it interacts with the connected equipment. I wouldn't worry about it, because it's no big deal, really. The main sound is coming from the GT-1, its effects and preamps/cabinets, and your own amp is only used as a monitor, to output the sound - think like a real stage monitor.

Hello there, Gene. I'm sorry for the late reply, but I've been behind with the comments... Hmm, good question! Hello, I have read some message boards where GT-1 users connect the the unit in the amp’s effects loop to use Mod, Delays, & Reverbs only, bypassing the GT-1’s preamps, in stomp box like mode. Of course there is no info how they set this up. I know it sounds weird as the GT-1 does not have return/send loop jacks. Is this even possible and can you show us how? Hope this not a redundant question or something obvious. Thank you for your awesome videos as I have the GT-1 and GT-100, you should get paid by Boss to teach this how to use their products!

Hello there, Paul. Thanks for your comment and questions, as well as your kind words. I greatly appreciate it. It is possible to connect the GT-1 through an amp's effects loop, to use only the Modulation, Delay and Reverb effects from the GT-1, yes. You simply connect the GT-1's input to the amp's Send input, and the GT-1's left output to the amp's Return input. Then you connect your guitar to the front input of your amp. I have a video on how to set the GT-1 up in Stompbox-like Mode - it's on my channel, so you can search for it. Thank you for your kind words, Paul, it makes me really happy. I would love to work with, or for, Boss, that's for sure... I'm still waiting for them to get in touch... I hope this helps. If not, then please let me know, and I'd be happy to assist further. Cheers.

@@GuitarNTabs Hello, sorry for the late reply but thanks so much for doing so. I finally got to try the mod/delay/reverb only setup using the effects loop and it works magnificently as you said after watching your stomp box mode GT-1 video. I had to make sure the Patch and Output Levels were adjusted as well. The feeling felt so great, it was like discovering gold especially since I bought the GT-1 over a year ago used and for less than a $100 USD. I do like the GT-1 and GT-100 as stand alone units as well but I have some really nice Marshall amps that has my tone for what I like to play. Plus I can also use that MST feature to EQ the overall sound which is a plus. I am shopping for a FS-7 right now as you recommended so I can expand my stomp box set and add a couple more FX. Again, thanks so much for your tutorials and videos on both the GT-1/GT-100. It is unbelievable that Boss does not even cover a lot of the material that you provide within their owners manuals or their own demo videos. If only they had someone like you that they should be sponsoring, they would be selling out of their products because you max out their potential. Especially with a flooded market with stomp boxes and multi-FX units everywhere, Boss stands out because they don't make junk. I appreciate you and I am going to write to Boss/Roland customer service to let them know that they should be checking you out! You do excellent work and are hope that only good things come to you in life. Good Luck Amigo and looking forward to all your videos!

Hello. should I be using the mono output or stereo output on the back of the Gt-1 to a boss katana 100 2x12? I’m using the “power amp in” and not the fx loop which disables the katana preamp. Also how do you enable/disable the preamp on the gt1 so I don’t have both going at the same time. Thank you.

Hey there! If I remember correctly, then the "Power Amp In" is for running a multi effect, like the GT-1, through it. Then you should take the left mono out of the GT-1, and run it into the Power Amp In, on the Katana. Then enable the PREAMP-button on the GT-1, by clicking it On/off. this is fiddly and annoying. I use a Fender Super Champ at home (small combo) a JCM 800 / 900 in the studio and a Blackstar Fly 3 stack for recording in my DAW. Are you saying that I need to change the output AND the PreAmp for every situation? I don't have to do this with my pedal board and I bought the GT1 because it contained the Boss pedals I wanted with some extras.
@GuitarNTabs4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Thanks for your comment and question - this is a great question. If you only use the GT-1 for its effects, and not the onboard preamp and cabinet models, then you should only change the Output Select, when you switch amplifiers. That's not too hard, and switching will enable the GT-1 to perform its best - hence the selection of different output options. However, if you use the GT-1's onboard preamp and cabinet models, then you should connect to the amplifier's effects loop return, in order to bypass the amp's preamp-section (EQ, channels, etc.) You don't want to have both your amplifier and the GT-1's preamp and cabinet models running at the same time... So, to recap, if you just use the GT-1 for its effects, then simply change the Output Select, to match the amp you're using, when you switch equipment, and that's all. For using the GT-1's onboard preamp and cabinet models, then connect to the amplifier's effects loop return and set the output select to Line/Phones. I hope this helps. Let me know what you think. All the best.

@@GuitarNTabs cheers, that's what I've been doing. It sucks volume out when you do it though. You're correct, I just wanted the effects. I'm disappointed with the Blues driver effect as this has always been my main pedal but I do need the reverb, trem and delay. Thanks for the reply

@GuitarNTabs5 ай бұрын
The difference might be hard to hear, especially if you simply switch between the Output Select options, with the same patch, etc. If your setup is the same, then you won't hear any difference. The Output Select will have an impact on the way the effects and preamps/speakers act in general, so it's always a good idea to match the Output Select to your setup. I hope this helps. Cheers.

I thought a combo amp just meant that it was an amp with effects built in
@GuitarNTabs2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Daniel. Thanks for your comment - I appreciate it. No, not quite. The Output Select lets the GT-1 know what it's being plugged in to. For example, the front end of a combo amp, the effects loop return of a stack amp or direct to PC via USB. I hope this helps. If you have further questions, please let me know. Best regards.

The name "combo" is just short for combination, meaning it's a combination of an amp and cabinet. If it's not a combo then it's a separate head and cabinet
