Amazing how Lennon went from playing in Hamburg in the early 60s - followed by all of the Beatles years - and finally to this in less than ten years. We often forget that the Beatles were around for really an incredibly short time.

McCartney with Helter Skelter and Lennon with Goodnight. That is one of the Beatles secrets, neither Lennon or McCartney could be put in a bottle, they were everywhere. Insane talent to have in a single band.

The thing that makes this song for me is the juxtaposition of the jaunty melody and upbeat rhythm against the raw introspective and personally revealing lyrics. He meant every word of this song. It's both sad and beautiful at the same time. Thank you for highlighting this lesser known masterpiece. We miss you, John!

Johns preferred echo was termed Bog Echo. John and Paul used to rehearse in the toilet (bog) of Paul's mum and dads house in Forthlin Road as they loved the echo/reverb in there.

Good analysis of this fun and forgotten John Lennon's song . It was one of my first songs from solo career that I struggled to learn, interesting to hear and fun to play. Using the bass strings to give rhythm to the melody was something he'd liked to do and the final effect is great!

The guitar you hear is George Harrison playing slide on his Dobro Resophonic guitar if there is an electric guitar it's in my front room not on this recording. Got it? I don't usually vent my spleen on fellow musicians but this is an exception. Man you have to get it together it sounds like you are making it up as you go along.I've been playing since 1966 and I know of what I speak.

Love it all.But..would venture to say, Lennon could corn it up sure, but Mac never really made insanely angular songs. No dis on Mac, but Mac seemed to be more of a purist in style, and Lennon an anarchist in style. Personally, I think Woman is the corniest song and production on earth and it's AWESOME.

Awesome, awesome video! The Beatles are my favorite band, and Lennon is my favorite Beatle, but let's be clear. Lennon was an insecure, boorish, and selfish human being. But ironically, that's what made him a brilliant songwriter/singer. The rejection of his father and death of his mother scarred him in ways that ended up molding him into who he became. On the other hand, not all of his songs were top-notch (especially as a solo artist), but he never had a formula for his writing. He truly wrote from his heart, without concern for how his music would be perceived (unlike McCartney).
