@itheuser First I'm 51 and was listening to the music of that era. I think that Clapton is pretty good, but he's way over-rated to me. I believe it was Pete Townsend that met up with Clapton and talked about how they were doomed. This new guy named Jimi Hendrix was doing things with a guitar that he couldn't even imagine doing.

Clapton is an interesting one. He made a lot of good songs and a lot of terrible ones. On one hand you have his stuff with Cream and on the other you have Riding with the King and his 2010 album. Most guitar players can play like him after a year of practice. Even by measure of his contemporaries there were better players - Page, Hendrix, Beck, Knopfler, Alman and literally any jazz guitarist. I guess Clapton became Clapton because he was pushing the boundaries of electric guitar and was one of the first music superstars and serves as an inspiration to this day for a lot of guitarists. The man doesn't deserve hate.

Clapton introduced me to the blues. After years of researching, studying, listening... not only to the music but the culture, Clapton is a true bluesman. He took from the originators, made his own, has shared and brought many others into the spotlight. The thing I find most interesting about Clapton is that though he is a killer player, he seems to LOVE playing rhythm and staying in the background from time to time.

Very few guitarists, (I don't know any), have a song of the stature of "Crossroads" (live cream recording) in their legacy.I have listened to this tune for 50 years and feel the same everytime I hear it. Particularly when Eric plays high up the board on the 2nd solo. Baker is literally galloping. For me it was Clapton who 1st brought me to the blues,and pointed the way back to the foundational artists such as BB King,Albert King,and Freddie King to name a few. I will always be deeply indebted to him.

Guitar Pilgrim - Eric Clapton combined technique with heart and artistry to become one of a select few who led a herd of white players into Blues scales and the math of the fret board. He had a LOT of help; BB, Albert, Muddy, Johnny & Edgar Winters, Jimi, Steven Stills and the Allmans & the Betts, to name a very few. THEN, folks like you come along; brimming with talent, technique, speed, intuition, intelligence, and education in music theory and a very studied but passionate approach to the type of music so many of us have loved all our lives. I am grateful for your efforts and for those of folks like Ross Campbell, Brett Papa, Tim Pierce, Dave Nassie, Andy at Shut Up & Play, Jamie Harrison, Chelsea Constable, and Anthony from Texas Blues Alley, again to name just a very few. Again, thank you for sharing your phenomenal array of gifts with the world which guide us through our stumbling efforts to become better guitar players.

You could have the same setup as EC but you may never reach the same heights that he has attained. It is what is between his ears and his fingers and his God given talent. Eric Clapton is a great guy, very humble. I find his guitar playing to be very good but he never makes me tingle in the way Hendrix or Jeff Beck or Knopfler or Gilmour can. Am I missing something?

I’ve always been blown away how Clapton made the Layla chord change work. My mind would never go there as a song writer, really takes vision and talent to make that work so organically.

Nice video. You really nail Clapton's use of vibrato. IMHO what makes him so brilliant, and so admired by other guitarists, is the subtlety of his technique. I liked how you mentioned his raunchy playing, which he seems to eschew. One of my favorite raunchy riffs of his is the lead part on "Those Were the Days" off the Wheels of Fire album. He really turns it loose and plays a blistering part. I also really like your discussion of his songwriting skills. He seems to have felt awkward in this regard in his early work, but really blossomed later on. His chord progressions are unique and not the typical progressions you find from other guitarists. Such a talented musician.

I had never paid attention to Eric Clapton when I was learning to play - I was a Keith Richards fan and loved funky rhythm guitar. Then I heard the brief intro that Clapton played when Lennon introduced him and the band at this concert. Just a handful of notes. Incredible. Started listening to Clapton in depth after that. Admire this vid and your channel!

You can’t talk about Clapton in general, or “Hideaway” in particular, without discussing Freddie King. Listen to Clapton’s playing before he discovered Freddie’s “Hideaway” and then Clapton’s technique after he spent a year holed up in his apartment listening to and learning Freddie’s technique.
@commanderthorkilj.amundsen3426

You're hyperbolizing here. Clapton did not spend a year on Hideaway. He played this very early in his career when he was with the Bluesbreakers., and was perfectly capable of assimilation, mastery, improv of his own, in a week or two's time. That said, Freddie, by virtue of playing with his fingers rather than a pick, had a distinctive sound.
@Stewbular
@Stewbular 5 жыл бұрын
Heavy Mental Eric was alive, playing guitar, & making records before the Bluesbreakers were recording the “Beano” LP in Decca studios. Btw I didn’t claim he spent that time learning one song - Freddie’s technique I said what I did based on listening, 49 yrs ago, to his “earlier than the Bluesbreakers” recordings and comparing those efforts to his technique with the Bluesbreakers after experiencing all of Freddie King’s catalog. Going back to listen to his Pre-Bluesbreakers recordings shocked me. There was a huge difference, that I hadn’t appreciated until I re-listened to his earlier work after I was totally emersed in Freddie King. Don’t believe me, ask Sonny Boy Williamson

stewart hart Gee, you’re sure knowledgeable. Or at least you can read Wikipedia. Clapton was indeed....”alive, playing guitar, & making records” but recorded Hideaway w/ the Bluesbreakers, early in his career, as I said earlier--in ‘66.
