Dam Austin its not promising when a 15 year pro says they are having troubles modeling a guitar. I want to learn. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate this a whole lot. I will pay it forward my friend

My pleasure mate, it's definitely a very tricky model. But I've learned so much since this video and the process has become much easier - it really required me to learn the surface modeling space because at the time I made this video I tried doing everything in the solid modeling tab.

@@austinshaner oh see yeah I don't know the difference to be honest. I mean I do but don't always understand when to use the function. I think I just learned something. Hey thanks a bunch. I really want to start 3d modeling all my specialty builds. I am hoping it will help sell them better. Anyhow thank you again my friend. Wish me luck. I'm only 2 weeks into learning 3d modeling. I've already designed and made a couple things. This should be no problem for me. I usually learn programs like that fast. I will stop back in later

Thank you for doing this series. I bought an SMW3D R7 years ago wanting to make guitars and ended up making anything and everything else because a guitar seemed extremely challenging no matter how much research I did. Looks like this series will get me well on my way!

Thanks for doing this... i'm experiencing these same challenges of the lofts, and non-uniform chamfers, bevels, sweep cuts. Haven't found much on the fusion site to illustrate these features. I taught myself AutoCad in 1987... LOL, long time ago.

I believe that guitar that you are trying to model the neck/body transition on is actually all one piece of wood which is why the transition looks so smooth. I could be wrong but I recall a solid slab guitar somewhere before and I think that was it. Great video!

I’m trying to create the fretboard using the fret find 2D DXF as a reference, but it will not constrain. I have watched half a dozen videos on it and have constrained absolutely everything I can see, and not one of my lines will turn black. Not one. Can you please do a video on this? It's just not working.

Thank you for making these videos. Could you provide a bit more detail on how to do the sketch of the fretboard? I uploaded the DXF and then created a sketch, but my lines are not black or dotted, and I can't seem to anchor the origin to it. If that doesn't give me away, I am a noob with Fusion 360. Thanks again.

Thanks for you video. You stated at the beginning you've worked with several different 3D software packages. Some are very expensive. Do you find the the Free Version of Fusion 360 just as good as VCarve, and Rhino Cad?? Thanks

Austin thanks very much for the quick reply I did get the origin to move, however, when I tapped enter or OK on the align drop box it all reverted back to where I'd moved it from?? Really sorry to be a nuisance, maybe I am just too old for this?😏🤣
@austinshaner3 жыл бұрын
Of course! Don't try to align, or move the sketch, what I'm talking about is using the midpoint constraint on the 12th fret while drawing the sketch. (Looks like a red triangle)

@@austinshaner Aah! sorry Austin it's a whole new language as well. The world I grew up in a loft was a space in the roof of a building or where the farmer kept hay. 😂🤣. Thanks so much for your time, I hope you're getting plenty of sleep too? 👍🏼

Hey dude, how did you learn how to design? Did you goto school? What type of work can you get into ?
@austinshaner3 жыл бұрын
I learned 3ds max in high school for game design, then used sketchup for years building DIY projects at home. Then one of my jobs taught me SolidWorks so I could assist the engineers with drawings and develop renders for our website. That really launched my interest and I transferred most of my knowledge from solidworks to Fusion and the rest is youtube videos when I run into particular issues. Now I use Fusion at home, and Siemens NX at my current job!
@spannerman48863 жыл бұрын
Hey Austin, you mention anchoring your origin point somewhere midway on the neck? I've tried Align and select 12th fret as from, but it won't let me select origin as destination any ideas please?
@austinshaner3 жыл бұрын
Hey spannerman, when you draw your fretboard sketch, select your 12th fret line and shift or ctrl click the sketch origin point, then hit midpoint. It should let you do this if you haven't made any other geometry in your fretboard sketch anchored to that point. The easiest time to do this is when you first start the sketch. Start with your 12th fret line then draw everything else around it. The more complicated the sketch becomes before you do it, the more difficult it will be to anchor it there without messing up everything else.

Gday Austin thanks for these videos mate! I'm learning a lot :) I'm having a problem I'm hoping you can help me with though. I already designed my guitars in Inkscape and when I import the .svg file it is not scaled the same. For instance: in Inkscape the guitar body is 335mm but when imported into Fusion360 it is 88mm. Is there a box I'm not ticking or something? Thanks for any help mate.
@austinshaner3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Sorry for the delayed reply. SVGs don't always include size information depending on how the program it was created in generates the file (vector files like SVG are a scalable equations, rather than fixed dimensions). So Fusion doesn't always know the correct size for the design. There are a couple different ways to tackle this. The fastest is measure the difference between what it should be vs what it actually is (335 vs 88), calculate the ratio and scale up or down accordingly. Another way is to bring that SVG into another vector program (like Adobe illustrator), verify dimensions or scale it there, then export as DXF (which typically is more reliable for scale information) and import that into fusion instead.
@Hobsonguitars3 жыл бұрын
@@austinshaner Hey mate your a legend! I exported it as a .dxf (autocad DXF R14 NOT r12) and then imported into Fusion360 and it is scaled perfectly! Thanks so much man it was driving me nuts haha :)

And solidworks will be very similar, but different in the exact tools and workflow. Some tools just work differently in solidworks, but it should translate fairly well.

I can’t figure out how to model the fretboard from fretfind2d
@austinshaner3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jesse! You would design your fretboard in fretfind2d then export that file as an SVG or DXF and import that into fusion. But since posting this video last year, I've found fretfind to be less useful than it used to be. I've actually found it easier to draw your fretboard manually (using the parameters you set in the fretfind app), or create a parametric fretboard using formulas (see my Parametric Design Intent video), or installing a plugin called Fretboarder (link below) amd use that to generate your fretboard inside Fusion 360. meeloo.github.io/fretboarder/
