@@pensive_ Interesting comment. Which Prog Rock groups or musicians are world class improvisors (meaning, day in and day out, the music they create is improvised and, appreciated and admired by masses of Jazz or other improvised music fans and supporters? During my listening days, I've appreciated groups such as Fates Warning, Rush and Genesis; Genesis is the only one of those three that may have incorporated improvisation into its performances but, really, I'm only suggesting that because of the overall 'feel' or sound of some of Genesis's earlier recordings. Certainly, Rush are as far from world class improvisors as it gets. Fates Warning? Cool band but, again, I recall nothing that focused on improvisation as artistry. Dream Theater? Umm... maybe, after they found a skilled drummer? Isn't Jordan Rudess supposed to be a respected improvisor? I could never stomach the sound and feel of DT recording at any length sufficient to offer a respectable opinion on the improvisation matter but, my understanding is that DT is just another Progressive Rock outfit: rock simplicity, fused with elements of styles that are less constricted than rock music's basic 3 chord, 1 of 3 time signatures, structures. Dave Matthews Band? Are they "prog rock?" Awesome drummer who not only embodies the essence of rock, rhythm n blues drumming (his time and feel are off the charts - one of the greatest ever). DEFINITELY, that man, Carter Beauford is also a fantastic improvisor (I've seen Dave Matthews Band live many times... it's rare to witness a drummer effectively be subtle on the stage at Soldier Field, Beauford's done it frequently). But, I've never really heard DMB referred to as "Prog Rock." Yes? Bruford was always interesting. Much more interesting that most of the stuff hinting at music that went on around him. "deep in jazz-land classical-land and ... " Not even. In fact, wet behind hind the ears and in over your soaked heads with each progressive step into the what may as well be quick sand for your elementary, at best, label-latching wannabees.

Great channel, Sandra. Very clear and well explained. Congrats. I'm telling this "secret" to my students for years. In my opinion the 1 6 group also includes the 3. then you got all the scales that which have avoid notes. 2 4 5 b7 are the scales without any avoid notes. I'm currently working on a book about these "magic scales"

Look at the second group. If you raise the root note of the ionian scale (c to c# in this case) you get all the relevant melodic minor scales: II chord: melodic minor V chord: lydian b7 (aka mixolydian #11) VII chord: locrian 9 IV lydian augmented and also the altered scale over the tritone sub: Db7 chord Fascinating stuff! Because my hope is to have better understanding of Django's music. My repertoire is mainly Spanish, South American, Cuban, Mexican and the 18th / 19th century classical French / Viennese schools. I'll probably never be a a Jazz musician per se, but I can become more educated as to what it is that I love about Jazz.. You're really helping me get there. @GuitarversumSandraSherman merely a corny joke on my part, but as a comic in all seriousness, thanks for the videos. It's all above my head as a purposefully self taught musician, but I appreciate how you tell how chords relate to each other (which I sort of already knew in principle), but especially how you can change a chords voicing to use it as a set-up passing chord so you can use it as a springboard to highlight certain facets of the next chord that otherwise would not be readily apparent. Sort of like changing the lighting shining on an object in a visual sense. A red object being perceived differently depending on what light it's being showcased under. Same object, but it looks different. You have good examples for the luddite pluckers of strings like myself.
