In this episode of "The Joe Satriani Guitar Method" the virtuoso guitarist himself discusses intervals and modes.

And then you come to the internet and hypocrites tell you: "You don't need theory, it will limit you...". Understanding music to the level he does (aside his composition talents) is what makes him such an amazing guitarist.
@ighfee2 жыл бұрын
Only poor guitar players say that 😜
@joshallen4848 Жыл бұрын
You need natural musical talent and some knowledge of theory. If you could only have one, natural musical talent wins, but knowledge of theory will hone that. All talent and no theory is like an illiterate person who has great charisma and conversation ability but can't write it down or read, and that limits their potential. All theory and no talent is like someone who is a professor of grammar who can explain how language works but in actual conversation is boring and lacks charisma. You gotta have a bit of both.
@fhmstudios3884 Жыл бұрын
Yup. That's the biggest lie some guitarists tell. Applied theory is paramount when it comes to a student's development.
@ronnypieters2999 Жыл бұрын
I actually love music theory. It makes you understand how things relate and work. I still suck , but at least I know why I am not good 😅. Only been playing two years now and getting better every day.

Wish I'd had these videos years ago....There's so much good instruction on KZbin now, Beato too is outstanding...but every bit of playing we do and have done can be incorporated, so what's important is to have no regrets- there was no time lost!

Joe is an amazing teacher: I have learned more reading his books and watching his videos than in any lesson I have ever taken! He makes complex things seems achievable, and makes simple stuff sound cool enough to practice.

this is my favorite lesson from him on intervals, so cool and learned a lot.

The never ending refining of a song seems to be a direct result of an artist and his ever growing knowledge of any particular instrument. Knowledge is power, soul is key and practice leads to perfection.

8:04= "Pitch Axis" from Not of This Earth. Also used to great effect in Lords of Karma and the bridge tapping sequence in Satch Boogie, in which I had the great fortune to of had Joe show me how to do correctly.

joe is the best at playing on a pitch axis. he can just use tension and keep you interested. I find it works best with the lydian mode and resolve to the 5 or 1 . but he can do it so effortlessly.

I find it hard to understand people wanting just action in his fingers than words of wisdom coming out from his mouth. You can't intricately explain the musicality of his if we fail to understand how some things work, like explaining further the relationships between, maybe notes or modes and stuff like that. Thing is... they are both important, both the action and words. You can't really understand if it's all just music.

@oneeyemonster32626 жыл бұрын
yeap, you can never hit the wrong note...it's the damn rhythm guitar player that coulndt keep up with the CADENCE. WTF..there's only 12 notes...You aint gatta play the same damn 7 notes in the same intervals over and over again. ALL 12 notes WORK..damn it. God forbid we hammer more fucken fret.lmao Like this catilonians.... 1.......2.........3.........4...5.........6.........7..8 = 7 notes b2......b3........b5...........b6........b7.........= 5 notes It's also the MAJOR pentatonic intervals if you count starting from the b2..hahahaaaaa b3, b6. b7 = NATURAL minor the b2 and b5 ?????? Like this...... b6 = Harmonic MAJOR b3 = Melodic minor b3, b6 = Harmonic minor b2, b3 = Melodic minor b2....aka Neopolitian or N6 b2, b3, b6 = Harmonic minor b2 b3, b5 = Melodic minor b5..This way you can play lydian dominant b2.lol b3, b5, b6 = harmonic minor b5...this way you can play lydian dom #2. AKA HUNGARIAN MAJOR Melodic minor #4 = AKA Lydian b3 or III mode of Harmonic MAJOR Harmonic minor #4 = Double harmonic minor..aka Hungarian minor Those the just 7 NOTE scales..with 7 MODES/CHORD in them each. FULLY EXTENDED chords are the samething as MODES. It's 63 modes..which will give you every possible 7 notes intervals. Basic chords are just every other note...You get what you get. You dont have to stack it every other note... example....Mix #2, #4 you can make ..... Maj....Dom Min min7 dim....half and full...too Shit...you can't play the wrong chords either...hahahhaaaaa IT"s fucken DRUMMER's FUALT God forbide...we play the FULL DIMINISHED (WH/HW) WHOLE TONE MESSIANI MODEs ( 9 each)

just LISTEN to your FEELINGS that your trying to EXPRESS..... its REALLY that simple... if it SOUNDS GOOD? then, IT IS GOOD! then just EXPRESS YOURSELF!.... ( and maybe the guitar is not the instrument for YOU? maybe the drums are for you? maybe the bass is for you? maybe the piano or synthesizer is for you? or maybe a wind instrument is for you? or another stringed instrument, like the violin? or viola? etc...... what is the instrument that is most pleasing to YOURE ears? what is the instrument that makes you say, WOW! I LOVE THAT! what is that? thats a good indication to wich instrument your connecting with! ( or maybe its vocals? singing? your voice is an instrument also! ) my work here is done........... : )
