Who owns a Joe Satriani model guitar here? I remember reading that Joe wanted them acoustically dead so that he had complete control over the sound through his electronic effects with no other variables. I'm curious what playing an acoustically dead guitar is like. Anyone who responds, hopefully you've owned something like a good Telecaster or an SG to compare it to. I've never played a high-end Ibanez. I've only tried an S-series with a blade-thin body and poplar top, which I surprisingly hated. The only other "super strat" style Ibanez guitar I played was a Jem Jr. which felt and sounded amazing! I guess it was well set-up. It just felt tight and perfect. so responsive. I can only imagine how great a real Jem would be.

I love Satch as a player. But as a teacher, dude, you better know music, as in *know music*! There's so much information that he's teaching and I can get lost on what he's showing (and telling).
@BigMateo24
@BigMateo24 8 жыл бұрын
+kigawman I think it's pretty well assumed that going into this video you already know your chords and modes inside and out. Any teacher can show you a minor or major scale, but many can't or won't show you how actually apply them. What Satch is doing is forcing you to think creatively about what your playing. He's not really teaching any specific riff or lick in this video, the purpose here is how he shows his thought his thought process in which he improvises to help YOU find what you want to improvise and play, and what feels natural to you. That's the best lesson there is and that's what he's brilliant at.
@kigawman
@kigawman 8 жыл бұрын
BigMateo24 Helpful to YOU if you know what you are doing. *BUT*, to a beginner or intermediate, still, you need to know music. YOU can't think creatively w/o any background of some sort of learning music. It doesn't matter whether Satch can teach you that or not. If you don't understand what he's teaching, he's probably giving you lip service for nothing! In the case of music, I stand by my comment, *you have to know music*. Its like driving a car without learning HOW to drive.
@BigMateo24

+kigawman So go learn some theory, and then you'll know exactly what he's talking about.
@kigawman
@kigawman 8 жыл бұрын
BigMateo24 Am I talking for only myself or I'm also talking on behalf of those ppl. who may not know a lot about theory? Keep in mind, there are others, not only egocentric/cocky dudes, who think just b/c they know something, are watching this video. Word of advice: Try to be more encouraging to others, not just only thinking of YOURSELF!
@kigawman
@kigawman 8 жыл бұрын
Juan2003gtr Am I asking you to lower the bar? Like I was talking to someone else, cocky imbeciles who think just b/c they know something feel they are entitled to put down others that are not technically inclined will say stupid things without thinking first. It just shows you so-called experts should not be typing text here to discourage others about learning technique first before learning the harder stuff.

its so funny when someone says, theory is unnecessary ;)
@sheltma1595
@sheltma1595 8 жыл бұрын
+Patryk Siewiera depends on your goal. Theory is not NECESSARY per say... but... you'll never be able to hang with THIS kind of music without it. You can jam blues and straight 3 chord rock without theory and be great. But if you want to do more advanced and complex music like Satch, or Vai, or Dream Theater or AX7, or jazz, or whatever... then yes, theory is very necessary
@borhanus
@borhanus 8 жыл бұрын
+Patryk Siewiera satriany actually said that rock is more about vibe not that exploring every other thing .so he give the idea of theory in rock music
@TheChodex
@TheChodex 7 жыл бұрын
Look up gypsy jazz players. "GYPSY" meaning they didn't go to school, and they use more theory in melodic way than any of the schooled guys. Theory is necessary if you listen to rock and blues your whole life and you want different sound. But if you have been exposed to complex music and sounds like classical and jazz since young age you will be able to pick up everything by ear just like Stochelo Rosenberg, Django Reinhardt, and Bireli Lagrene for example. :P

Lesson from Greg Howe and Victor Wooten, you can play outside notes as much as you want, as long as it rhytmically strong and land on the right note. But it will be different style of music, mostly funky, and will not work in the ballad or melodic type of song like Always with me Always with you or Flying in a Blue Dream, which is Joe Satriani is the best at doing it. But for song like Satch Boogie, you can actually do more experiment on outside notes.

I have endless respect for Satch, one of my hero’s…but In reference to Joe’s opening monologue _(so-to-speak)_ I believe it can be looked at how he explains, or you can take for example a player like _Stevie Ray Vaughan_ where, the notes he *DOESN’T* play, share a role of equal importance to the notes he *DOES* play….

Worked as a guitar tech for a band that was touring with joe. He actually gave me some impromptu instruction, dude is actually as cool as he seems. The only problem was trying to remember what he had taught me through the cloud of High Grade bud he was smoking with me. Not to mention all the freebasing we were doing, which hallucinations soon followed. Oh well, I shit my pants because of all the cocaine smoking, gained a new nickname "skidz" and became the best guitarist of all time past and present. The horrible cocaine freebase habit I know have pretty much ruin it though. Oh well guess ill play steve vai's entire catalog, just as soon as I freebase a little, well a shitload more cocaine

5th mode of harmonic minor. Aka phrygian major. Basically phrygian with a major 3rd. Then the root chord of the scale becomes a dominant chord. Scale degrees phrygian dom: 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7 What if like to know is what Lydian minor he's talking. About. I know of 2 and have my own because I wasn't happy with Lydian minor actually being minor to use over a min7 chord.
