I'm glad you did a tribute to Gary Moore with this lesson. But honestly, Gary is probably one of THE most difficult players to cop, only because his talent was so immense. Jeff Beck and Eric Johnson level. HIs playing is not easily analyzed because it's not just note "A" to note "B", it's the sheer CONVICTION that Gary put into each note. I saw Gary Moore live in 1987 in Tucson, Arizona, and I was stunned by the sheer ferocity of his playing. A few months later, I was off to GIT in Los Angeles to study with Paul Gilbert, Norman Brown, Steve Travato, Carl Verheyen and many other fantastic guitarists. I've hung out with some greats, but nobody had the sheer power of Gary Moore. Trust me on this. Also, Gary's voice was fantastic! The best way to incorporate Gary's style into your own, is to LISTEN to his recordings and study his live performances. I've been inspired by Gary for 30 years...I hope you get inspired too!
@trufisp19 жыл бұрын
+azguitar Gary was inspirationally emotive,expressive guitarist...comparing him to Eric Johnson is silly, and leads me to believe GIT does not offer comparative analysis,or you skipped those offerings ....i'm not even going to bring up the overrated, repetitive Beck....
@azguitar9 жыл бұрын
+trufisp1 Actually, Jeff Beck was a huge influence on Gary Moore, as well as Hendrix, Peter Green and Clapton. To call Jeff Beck "overrated", is somewhat amusing, yet saddening to realize that you actually feel this way. Maybe take another listen/look to Beck? By the way, "The Loner was written by an ex Jeff Beck bandmate, and "Shapes of Things to Come" was a Yardbirds/Beck tune that Gary Moore covered so well. Gary's solo on "Shapes", is one of the finest rock guitar solos. Period.
@trufisp19 жыл бұрын
I'm aware of Mr. Moore's influences, again your attempt to equate his ''skill level'' with Eric's is simply wishful thinking.Gary ( who i love ) could not play a single song from the Johnson catalog , and it would laughable and amusing to think about Beck or Clapton's attempt . ''Period''.
@azguitar9 жыл бұрын
They had different skill sets. I'm a huge Eric Johnson fan, and I've hung out with him several times. Great guy too. I commented more on the talent level of these players. I believe they ALL have immense talent, neither one is more or less talented than the other. They are ALL unique artists. And all of them are challenging to emulate for different reasons. Gary's talent level was right up there with the world's finest guitarists.
@wayneblanchard978 жыл бұрын
+azguitar - Just a minor correction; the Yardbirds' tune was 'Shapes of Things', not 'Shapes of Things To Come'. There is a Jeff Beck guitar tab book available, that contains - erroneously - the music for 'Shapes of Things To Come', which is a totally different song and had nothing to do with the Yardbirds. How such an error could happen is incredulous, but shows the editors didn't know their stuff. Or the author didn't proof the final draft. Jeff had no personal involvement with the book.

Although my favourite guitar player is Mick Taylor, I was lucky enough to sit about 10 feet from Gary while he entertained his wife and a bunch of his friends for his birthday at my friend's jazz club - 606 Club in Chelsea, London (I think it was 2001 or 2002) - he was, simply put, the most amazing guitar player I've ever seen (along with Jeff Beck) - he simply played blistering solos and intricate picking and chord work and NEVER hit a single duff note during the entire set.... amazing to watch - and an honour to be one of about 150 people in such an intimate setting. R.I.P. Gary - And thanks so much Andy Aledort, you brought back such fabulous memories....

Greetings from The Republic of Ireland. Gary first started playing with "the Irish" Skid Row at 16. They were managed by Clifford Davis, who also managed Peter Greene's Fleetwood Mac. Peter Green was in very bad mental shape when Gary was pestering him to sell his Les Paul. Peter eventually sold it to Gary for £400, but later tried to buy it back on numerous occasions. Gary refused. Great lesson, and I always enjoy your lessons and information - kudos to you.

Very good lesson, man. Your ability to transpose and break it down into digestible bits is a testament of your own immense technique and understanding. And whoa! Good tips here for Gary's technique. I will certainly be looking at them closely. Saves hours listening over and over, clicking back and forth, trying to catch his riff. Andy has done all the hard work and we have to be grateful for that. Thanks. My pinkie is pretty useless after an accident, so I have been drawn to Gary Moores technique as its common knowledge that he did not use his. (I just edited "does not use his" to "did not use his". Still cant believe he is dead) . Thanks again to Mr Aldedort

I've been trying to play like Gary for 4 years now and if any one wants some more tips on playing like Gary Moore, here is my advice: 1.Get a good tone from a good guitar, I use a jackson and it's not the best for blues. 2.Work A LOT on your bends and vibrato, it's a fine art, not just a random vibration of the string. 3. Make the notes cry, give them the longest sustain before the next note and so on. This has helped me a lot and I would say I am at 70 % of playing like him. But no one will ever reach his level of course , cause he's a legend !

For me ? What made Gary so special ? Sure there are many great players / technicians and you can learn and incorporate their techniques buy what you can't copy is the source where it comes from ,,their personality,,,obviously i don't know what happened in Gary,s life that made him pour so much soul into his guitar but the music we love is the kind that forms emotional attachments with us and with songs like Parissiene walkways,Still got the blues,The prophet etc,,,he touched us with beautiful melodies,add in his blistering technique to the mix and it created the guitar legend Gary Moore,,it,s no secret that present day guys at the top end of well known players list are playing Gary Moore songs in their sets,,,Gilbert,Via Nuno etc.

Gary Moore was a lot more than a few pentatonic licks pbst , his early skid row stuff was outstanding for the day , even now players have trouble with it , not to be confused with the metal band skid row , that is a different band ,its one thing to play a few licks of this style here , it is another to play them clean and lightning fast as Moore did

@wayneblanchard979 жыл бұрын
+SantomPh - I recall reading - possibly in a Moore interview - that he paid £30 for it. That said, I'm not sure if he 'bought' the guitar from Green, or if Green gave it to him and Moore insisted on giving him something for it. Given his lowly professional status at the time it is very possible that the £30 (or £100) was all he had at the time.
