I love how he plays fast but his phrases aren't just linear runs through scales or the equivalent of arpeggio exercises. Every phrase is well thought out and melodic with interesting note choices. I find Marty far more interesting and original than 99% of shredders

Broderick and Poland are awesome, but Marty had an ear for good phrases. Every note was meant to be in the solo. There was never too little or too many ideas in his solos. They were perfect.

what sounds good to your ear... so true, when I had just begun learning guitar, I had only learned the C major scale. But the first melody I ever made was in E minor but I also used a major 6th, obviously I didn't understand that back tgen but now when I look at it I see the most unique melody by me

One of my personal all time favorite players that doesn't play even close to what these shredders of today play is the great Robin Trower :-) He puts 100% of his emotion in his playing.

Friedman says he's a fake jazz player. But he plays lots of advanced Jazz fusion with Japanese bands.. He's trying to downplay his technical knowledge, but he's played with the most technical jazz band DCPRG. He makes lots of fusion stuff like Cassiopeia with Japanese artists

Great advice! I'm a hammer-on and pull-off type of player. I love hammer-on's and pull-off's because it sounds cool and it's really comfortable and I always combine that with bending and I think it sounds pretty good ;) I guess my playing is labeled as blues/rock :) I'm not a shredder though haha!

The concept he is trying to get across is to be different. Playing fast doesn't mean a thing if it doesn't say something musically. Most shredder types play a bunch of complicated nonsense that rarely fit's anywhere than by itself in a stand alone environment. Players like Marty get it, playing outside the box, adding dynamics and making it musical is how you differentiate yourself from the pack.

Marty’s peculiar way of placing his right hand makes his style of playing prone to string noise. Nobody is perfect but still, I wish I had that kind of technique.
@SaintKines
@SaintKines 7 жыл бұрын
He claims he developed that picking style to avoid string noise. He holds his hand completely away from the strings so just the pick hits even when he's going fast.

@@SaintKines probably you never hold a guitar. when you play you MUST touch strings that should not sound with your hand and mute them :)
@SaintKines
@SaintKines 3 жыл бұрын
@@Vic-f1t I know. I've been playing over 20 years. I'm not great but I can play. What I mean is other than palm mutes Marty holds his hand that way to avoid access noise. I can't play the way he does myself.
@Vic-f1t
@Vic-f1t 3 жыл бұрын
@@SaintKines no matter what your strings resonate when you hit notes. you can check it when play any note(as example, E on 5th) your first and 6 string start make noise(you can see that strings vibrating, when you touch them with finger you should feel that), and you have to use noise gate(with good settings pedal mute noise and make your sound much worse), other way mute with palm :)
