Half a century back, in early seventies I remember reading an article in a Bengali magazine written by a sports journalist (forgot the name). In that article he wondered whether India will ever be able to produce a GM. There was clear skepticism, and frustration in his writing. We have come a long way since then! We have 85 GMs!. And, both our men's and women's team are Olympic Champion! Feels so good!

Hikaru, I am impressed with your knowledge of Indian chess history. You are right, India had no chess culture to speak of till 1970s. Manual Aaron who became an international master in 1961 was the only International master in India till 1978. Vishwanathan Anand, son of a Railway Engineer, showed flair for chess and spent his formative years in Philippines, then a chess powerhouse of Asia and home to Eugine Torre the only grand master from Asia. Anand became Indian national champion at the age of 15 and kept setting new marks every passing day. The fact that the first GM of India also became world Champion and inspired generations of Indians into chess is something that could not have been imagined even by the most optimistic Indian chess fan. As an Indian chess fan, I have seen India becoming from a one IM nation to a double goldmedal winner in chess Olympiad. An Indian is also likely to be crowned world champion. All that is such a nice feeling for someone like me who has seen it all for the last 50 years.

Viswanathan Anand is the reason why I played chess as a board game in my childhood with my family and I was good at it. I've won like multiple school competitions even without learning a thing about chess during that time. Now that after 2020 and so much exposure of chess. I learned so much theory by just watching videos and understood the complexity of chess. I was playing this game for fun & games, just like many other Indian were and this is all cause of Viswanathan Anand and he get all the credit for making chess so popular that now we have the best players from India and more to come in next few years.

Best game reviews around. Most of them just show what engines tell and humans dont think like engines.

See this is why hikaru is so loved cuz he can be happy for others improvement and achievements and applauds players and their performances unlike someone ( procedure ) who just accuses a team because they are winning .

Wesley was right you definitely would’ve helped the team, but it was really gracious of you to give India all of the credit and say that they would have one gold either way it was an amazing performance! Like always love the videos Hikaru!

Hikaru is pretty modest when he says even if he plays there was a high chance India would have still gotten gold. I would like to say, it would definitely be more difficult.
