I feel like Ding is coming into each game being okay with a draw, and this is impacting his judgment of good positions that he gets. Like when Carlsen really wanted a draw against Caruana in their final classical game, and took the first opportunity to repeat moves. Granted, Ding is not forcing draws with near decisive advantages, but it seems like he's sort of sensing that he may have a slight edge, but then questions himself, reminds himself a draw is okay, and then initiates a repetition or forces a liquidation

Yeah but that's how you win championship matches. If you aren't 100% of a decisive advantage, why push it?

maybe he wants to take this to a tiebreaker because he knows Gukesh is worst with faster time controls

@@fauge7 yes and no... you also lose championship matches by not taking chances that are presented to you. i also think that the tone of the match would be far different if ding pressed gukesh really hard in a game to make him fight for a draw. carlsen and caruana played numerous games like this in their match. as a fan of fighting chess and of ding's play when he was at his best, it's a bit disappointing to see ding repeatedly initiate draws in positions that still have life in them. but regardless, it's a great privilege to watch two incredibly strong players play a 14 game match and i'm excited to see new openings and ideas as neither player seems to be repeating openings!

If this is his mentality gukesh will beat him, u can't survive for 7 games against an ambitious player 😂

Very excited to see the London. Ding seemed to have some deep prep and Gukesh was out of it a little sooner. After Nc4 Giri and Hess/Leko were showing some lines that were very scary for black, actually a lot of really interesting and sharp position could have raised but of course we don't go into any of those and after Qd6 was played it was time to go to bed. Disappointing but it's a long match.

You would say playing the top engine moves is very good, but if you play the top engine moves like Gukesh, isnt it a lot easier for the opponent because he of course prepared the top engine moves. So if your opponent knows what to play everytime because you respond with the top move isnt that defeating the purpose of playing the top move?
