Larry 'Music' Muzynski said he pulled 10.4G in the dogfight against the SU-22. It was actually a very fast dogfight taking place close to supersonic speeds. When he landed back, they saw the G-meter pegged at 10+ G and the maintainers were so happy about the two SU-22 being shot down, they did not write him up. They celebrated it with 'Music' instead. I remember this incident like it was yesterday. I was on the flight deck that day when it was announced that 2 Libyan migs had been shot down for firing upon our aircraft first. I was assigned to VA-82 Marauders Aviation Ordnanceman. I remember the tomcats missing 2 sidewinder missiles. My first Med cruise so it was a eye opener.

Nicely done! I was aboard the USS Texas CGN-39. We were part of the USS Nimitz carrier battle group as carrier escort. I was in CIC (combat information center) on GCC1 (gun control console 1) when this incident occurred. The part of the story not mentioned but was hair raising is.. a Russian Kashin Class Destroyer was very near by monitoring our two battle groups. I was zoomed out on that Russian Destroyer and as soon as those SU22 splashed, the missile bays popped and I reported Missiles On The Rail! CPT Andres ran down from the bridge and slammed the keys into the Harpoon missile console. Within seconds it was reported the USS Texas, Arkansas, Pebble and Mississippi all assigned Harpoons to this Destroyer! Being a FTG and in CIC for every and anything.. this really was as close as it gets to a really bad moment in history. Slowly over the next few hours the Kashin wiggle off without incident escalation. Latter on that day I heard that someone Shined the Kashin with missile frequency pretty much as the dog fight was taking place. Thus the response from the Russian Destroyer. This would have been a great tragedy was it not for many many cool heads. The Rest Of The Story! Wonderful work! Thanks so much! FTG1 Tripp USS Texas CGN-39 1980-84 ✌️PT

@@SaadAlHezaey I do not remember that. I do remember that we lost an aircraft on this cruise. I was on duty and was watching flight ops on the Nimitz from GCC2 with my Remote Optical Sight. As I was watching an aircraft suddenly crashed into the water just off the ship only a few feet .. my heart sunk, knowing that everyone on that aircraft is gone. About two seconds later the entire battle group went to General Quarters and conducted the search which resulted in only finding insulation floating on the water around the crash site. I couldn’t remember much about it so I looked it up just now. This is what I found: “November 17, An S-3A, assigned to Anti-Submarine Squadron (VS) 24, crashed into the water just aft of Nimitz, about 70 miles northwest of Sicily. CO Cmdr. Phillip L. Reed, Lt. Douglas C. Deem, Lt. j.g. Carey A. Arthur and AW3 Charles Wade were killed.” ✌️PT

These Tomcat pilots were much calmer than the guys in 1989. Maybe "Hank", "DJ", "Music" and "Amos " didn't expect to be fired upon. Probably the Tomcat Drivers in 1989 have been sensitized to that incident. Also interesting tot see that Brevity Code was not that much applied back in 1981.

It's too bad the F-14 Tomcat that was Fast Eagle 107 in this incident was destroyed in 1994 when that female pilot crashed it trying to land it on a carrier. She had no business flying a fighter jet, she had already had a bunch of incidents and was on probation. This was the governments fault though, they were pressuring the military to get a female pilot in the air etc.

Very interesting. The level of these pilots' brains, training, and nerves is breathtaking. Their post-military careers as commercial airline pilots must be a great relief. But as we watch these "triumphal" videos let us not forget the talent and commitment of the Libyan pilots, not evil men, who were defending their country and doing their jobs. A great quote from a European chronicler of the Crusades, describing the defenders of Muslim-held stronghold: "...the flower of infidel chivalry was in their town." @Erik Pantoja Well they would have had to get the Iranian pilots to tell the stories on the show and it would be harder to do that because Iranians are bad....we are told.... but Saudi Arabians are good..we are told. Some stories out of that war say that one AIM- 54 Phoenix missile took out two Iraqi aircraft flying in close formation. Not just once, but several times. One story says they shot the AIM-54 Phoenix at a 4 group and it took out 3 and damaged the 4th. I don't think the missiles we have now have the range and payload of the AIM-54 Phoenix.

@@Cjephunneh The United States was taunting Gaddafi. Gaddafi had extended his boundaries and stated he would defend these new boundaries. Reagan put our Navy in international waters and planes in international air. Gaddafi attempted to defend his new boarders. After this incident...... Gaddafi quieted down. We were aggressive when we bombed Gaddafi's house.

@trublu97 The Libyans were defending their land despite the difference in armament and strength, and this is what encouraged the Americans to attack !!! Perhaps if that was off the coast of China or Russia, America would not even dare to think about flying near it. It is arrogance and arrogance

@trublu97 Forget this nonsense. You are only courageous about small countries. As for the great countries, your calculations with them differ. Just two days ago, Russian Sukhoi planes were harassing a US spy plane in the eastern Mediterranean, and we did not see any reaction or confrontation, as you did with the Libyans. You were satisfied with only resentment and anxiety.

Your report also contains many falsehoods. Pilot Belkacem Emsik Al-Zintani is still alive. Also, Emsik, before his plane was hit, managed to shoot down the American F-14 and killed its commander Henry Clement !!! Ask your friends about Henry Clement, where is he now?

@@Cjephunneh ?? Fascist euphoria? Get your facts straight: That was not their coastline. They were several tens of miles beyond what international law defined as legitimate national waters for any country. Gaddaffi thought he could get away by claiming more waters he was legally entitled to. He got what he deserved. The only fascist here was Gaddaffi. Stop deffending his actions; I know its fashionable and edgy to blame the US for the world's evils, doesnt make you any more intelligent nor accurate.
