Just stumbled across your channel. Have watched nearly a dozen of your videos now in the last couple of days. Loving your work both of you. Your videos are full of information and are well presented, and well produced. I see so many videos of people presenting in such a false, over-energetic way that it's such a relief to see people making their own channels, presenting in a more natural and realistic manner. I hope (maybe just dream) to lead the life you lead one day and so this information is just great. Have already shared it with a friend who's also interested in a similar future. And may I say also how lucky you are to have found each other and be such similar spirits. Your chemistry and respect of each other is plain to see. Please continue to share your adventures. It's our privilege that you share them with us.

We are really enjoying your videos as we find them to have the right mix of boat stuff and travel. We have a L42 currently at Skull Creek, SC which is convenient to Hilton Head Airport. As a pilot this makes traveling to the boat to perform maintenance and upgrades easier to do as we live in middle GA. A one hour flight or a 3 hour drive. We have just under 3 years before we can cut the lines but this gives me some time to complete those things to bring this old boat into shape. Keep bringing the adventure as we are soaking them up. SV Trig.

Hey thanks for saying that Caleb. We are meeting more and more people who are working remotely while cruising. I co-wrote a book years ago with a friend who now works a few days a week and does really well with it while they travel continuously. But I guess it depends on your trade. Did the stretch of the ICW from Pamlico Sound to Wilmington and what a nightmare in some spots. Bridge operators were a bit of a pain during the night (and nowhere to anchor). Found dockage around midnight about halfway to the cut to the river, but the entrance was tight and a bit convoluted. ICW is not a fun way to travel if your a first timer doing it, especially on a 40' ketch, 4.7' draft. Maintenance of ICW is severely lacking in areas where the buoy is more a "suggestion" and not a proper marker, hence twice aground on a bar (buoy on wrong side of..). We were moving the (just purchased) boat from Deltaville, Va. to Corpus Christi, Tx. Motor southing during May, had engine failure off the tip of Diamond Shoals and had turn toward and sail in to the Hattaras inlet (in the process blew out the jib!!!) to wait til morning to get hauled across the bar into the sound to Oden's docks for repairs. More sludge and "kitty litter" in the fuel tank than I've ever seen, clogging up the filters! Think Cap forgot to have the tank polished before we left. Boat had been on hard for 3 years. From there across the sound, down the ICW to Cape Fear to Wilmington for haul out and shipment to Texas. Wasn't taking any more chances. The yard and marina did a great job getting us in and squared away.

They are horrible. We use them so seldom I had forgotten. I’m not sure sunbrella is the right stuff though...most boats seem to use something softer.
@mikephillips93115 жыл бұрын
@@TheOKellys We had sunbrella covers on our fenders for 12 years, they looked great (washable), hold up great to UV, don't fade, etc. There may be other materials available these days as well though, if you find an alternative let us all know what it is!
@TheOKellys5 жыл бұрын
yeh? well we have spare matching sunbrella on board. and those old fenders are already leaving goop on the hull. Not a big deal with a little 3M, but why create extra work? Will check into materials.

AIS is an impressive technology...however I have found that having it as a sailing vessel or small motor yacht it makes you a target for the coast guard and police forces. They can see that you are a slower sailing vessel and easy to catch. Therefore some feature a privacy mode. I am trying to get my wife more into sailing, the little sailboat we have she doesn't mind sailing around for a few hours, but I can't seem to get her really enthused about a longer adventure. However, I have a plan that revolves around the idea that she just has to spend some time on a boat which is big/comfortable enough. She doesn't mind flying with me though. No problems at all. If you re coming to the mountains of NC there is a lot to do. Since I live around Asheville I have some points of interest to share. The Biltmore Estate..If you want to go more than once while here get the season pass. If you like hiking, Transylvania County has a lot of waterfalls. Like around a hundred, and a kick bottom national forest. The Pisgah National Forest. There is also an Asheville Trolley tour. All in all lots to do. Thanks for the video!!!

I wonder! Seems like we have less trouble than other boats. Yes, you are right about bigger boats...definitely more comfortable. I’ll be doing some videos on this topic this summer. Appreciate the note.

@@TheOKellys Sorry for the late response.... I think you are in the unique position of understanding weather systems and information but, more importantly, able to help us lay - um z-bones, understand what are the three (or five or whatever) things to look to and consider when assessing all of the weather info sources. (Plus you have the communication skills, etc par excellence). Brent on Cat Impi is very good with his technical descriptions of dealing with weather, etc. He does a wonderful job but the presentation is not his profession and (without being critical of his efforts) I think you could distill and present a weather series that many of us would subscribe to. Whether it be a series or a book, I think there may be several chapters and I, for one, would be more than happy to pay for your expertise. (maybe start with a free teaser? And not sure about the green headband...) Cheers, Fair winds and scratches for Sugar

Have a question. You're telling, that the vessel, that you spotted on the radar was a give-a-way vessel, since you were under the sail. Based on the boating class and that you knew that it was a commercial ship (909'), he has an exclusive right of way. As I know, only the recreational POWER vessels had to change the course in this situation. Please let me know, if I'm wrong.
@TheOKellys3 жыл бұрын
As far as I understand them, under the COLREGS, no boat has absolute right of way, period. All vessels are obligated to avoid collisions and do so using the rules of the road. Commercial vessels don’t have exclusive right of way. A sailboat has to give way to a boat with limited maneuverability. I said in the video theoretically....I didn’t say absolutely. Why? He didn’t show up on AIS until after he passed me. Let’s assume he didn’t see me on AIS until passing me also and could not have known I was under sail. Until then I saw only his red nav light and he could only have seen my red nav light and/or stern light, necessitating his passing behind me, which he did. You are making an assumption based on a broad statement I made about power vessels vs sailboats. Assumptions are what get people in trouble. And I confused things by saying broadly that we had right of way. Neither of us did, given the information we had, so both captains made the right call with the information we had. All that said, we always stay away from any large ship if possible. However, we routinely see them make maneuvers at speed that we could never anticipate or “get out of the way of.” Hope that clears things up for ya!

Would you ever consider netting instead of bare life lines to give Sugar a bit less of an opportunity for testing your DOB maneuvers?
@TheOKellys5 жыл бұрын
No, Sugar, until this season has been incredibly sure footed and confident aboard. I have never had a concern, even in bad conditions. Sugar is 14 and her health is failing. She's no longer steady enough to be offshore, not for risk of falling overboard (though that is certainly a risk), but because her quality of life while being bounced around by the ocean and not able to steady herself under her own power is unfair. So for as long as Sugar is part of the crew, we will be sailing in protected waters and her falling overboard is not a real concern for us.

Not where I sail. We just avoid areas where that is a problem. And I don't worry about pirates and security in general. If someone is of the mind to risk their life to take something from me, I have no need to tangle with them. I will just give them what they want and wish them the best with it.

In case you are wondering why the screen was flickering: Your camera records at the same frame rate as the screen's refresh rate (50hz). You should be able to change your camera to record at a higher frame rate, like 60fps, so the screen wont flicker when you record it in the future. :-)
