As someone who has lived in Gulfport then Biloxi for 16 years, I can tell you that Gulfport is the trashiest place in Coastal MS. Especially south of the Interstate. Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Long Beach & Pass Christian are all pretty nice, but Gulfport is the blight on the area. It’s because of the people that live there, the city tries really hard to make it nice but the crime keeps getting worse.

Gulfport "downtown" is very pretty, lots of money spent to make that happen. Just a few more block North, East and West things go down. I just looked up "industries in Gulfport, MS". Other than hospitality and healthcare there really aren't any big employers (It didn't include military). That's what this area needs, good solid employment. Not more casinos, but surely there is some manufacturer that could be lured here. Good question for candidates in the upcoming elections. There are good people here who just need more opportunities.

The reason the beach water is brownish (brackish) is because two rivers on both sides of the coast run into it. Also, there are little to no waves due to barrier islands blocking them.

A LOT of our Military retire in South Mississippi along the coast. It is called the emerald gym known for all the live oak trees. Yes you can walk barefoot on our beaches because we have machines that sift the sand regularly due to storms.

You missed Crusin The Coast Oct.1-8 Gulfport and the entire area along the coast was the host of the largest Car Show in America. This year 9618 Classic Cars registered this year. a huge block party indeed.

I came to the MS Gulf Coast on vacation nearly 30 years ago. I fell in love with the quaintness of the towns and when I crossed the Bay bridge between Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis I had this sense I'd never felt but knew I was home!! I have been here on the Coast since and the greatest thing going here on the Coast and beyond on MS are the people. Life here is easy, laid back, and steeped in history because New Orleans is an hour away, Vicksburg to north, and so much more like the fishing, best food hands down, and the sweet tea and friendly "How y'all doin??". I survived Hurricane Katrina and witnessing this community coming together to recover from one of the worst natural disasters in the US, was humbling. We are a poor state yet are rich in all the qualities I never found moving around the world as a military brat.......so c'mon down and thanks for the awesome video of my favorite place on Earth......#MSGulfCoast

Sir, you drove right by our home on 2nd st. When you turned left off Thornton. Born and raised in Lafayette my wife and I have retired here in Gulfport. Yes, it’s not perfect but what city is but having lived in Ventura, CA for 10 yrs (79-89), As well as Houston and Galveston, Gulfport is a wonderful place to live. The people are friendly and there is plenty to do. We can walk to the Aquarium from our house. As for as the cost of Housing, a custom home around 2nd St will cost you $500 to $1M and up. We’re 1 block off the beach so the further you get from the beach the cheaper it gets. Great video and best of luck.

Gulfport is the more chill side, whereas Biloxi is the more touristy casino driven side. Nice to see Gulfport post Katrina because it really did a lot of damage to the Mississippi coast despite the focus being on New Orleans.

Thank you for showing how beautiful Mississippi can be. I live in Long Beach which is next to Gulfport. From the west it’s Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi. Most people hear MS and think uneducated, backwoods, racist, and poverty driven. We are so much more than that. The stereotypes come from the MS Delta area which is far north. Thank you again for showing how much more we are. I’ve lived here all my life. Katrina about wiped us off the map but our communities came together and we’re better than ever. Im The Local Born Park Ranger...Actually!! You are standing in the Mississippi Sound.. The Gulf of Mexico is about 12 miles out.. other side of the Barrier Islands.. Glad You enjoyed the MS Sound and the Coast! I was Born in Gulfport, Been on Coast 34 Years... Rode out Hurricane Katrina in Highschool...Twin cities??? Biloxi was founded around 1699 Gulfport wasnt i corporated till 1898.. used to be Mississippi City... Oldest House in MS is the Krebs House in Pascagoula. A perfect example of Colonial French Construction built in 1757...Im not knocking the video but the terminology is a bit incorrect. I can remember what that area looked like after Camille in 1968 and Katrina in 2005 came through. I can't believe the area is still habitable after seeing what I saw back then.......anywhere near the beach was totally wiped out. Having relatives in Biloxi I drove my truck down there loaded with anything I could think of that would help...wasn't even sure I could make it past the National guard, but once on 11o going down into Biloxi, they saw what all was loaded in my truck and just waved me in. Terrible destruction but the people were inspiring. Never saw any federal support...maybe too early...but pickup trucks loaded with cases of free water were parked by roads, churches were taking deliveries of semi tractors of relief supplies sent by other churches around the south and neighbors were helping neighbors.

I drove down 90 in Biloxi the following morning after Karina had moved north. Me, my dad, and grandpa. Very few people actually got to see the aftermath down there with their own eyes. I was only 15 bit can still see it vividly. Broadwater and President casino destroyed. The grand barge on rhe north side of the highway just sitting in a parking lot. Slippery Sam's and the little theme park where the green trex once were completely gone like it was never there to begin with. I could go on and on....

So, I've been living here for 5 years now. Well done vid!! Honestly the housing prices especially the rentals are a lot higher than what you mentioned. Everybody seems to be in a panic buying mode right now with the interest rates going up. Been to Shaggy's and Rooney's both more than once! You should check out downtown Ocean Springs. That's where I live currently! I've been working on buying a house for some time so I'm pretty familiar with the market these days, sadly.

I drive that beach almost every week. Such an amazing drive, but the beaches get better the further east you go. Dauphin Island is more beautiful, and Orange Beach if more than that, then Pensacola Beach is even better, and by the time you get to that Destin to Panama City Beach area, it’s breathtakingly beautiful.

I love Gulfport. I lived there at one time. I lived in Biloxi, also. I was living in MS when Camille hit in 1969. I had not moved to the coast yet. I was about 80 miles inland, but I did see the devastation up close and in person. All of the beautiful Antebellum homes along US Hwy. 90 were destroyed. There was nothing left of them except the steps leading to what was a front door and fireplaces. So, only the brick parts were left. If you think modern-day is beautiful, and it is, you should have seen pre-Camille days.

Howdy great to have you down here. We live in the little city of D'Iberville,just north across the bay from Biloxi. Hope y'all have a great time. We are in a nice little 3 bedroom house we just bought about 3 years ago when I got back into the country. Very quiet mixed neighborhood. Paid $114,500 for our house about 3 miles as the crow flys from the beach😊👍🙏.

You mentioned population numbers: GPT 72k, BLX 45k but Metro approx 450k. I want to kinda clear that up. That 450k includes the ENTIRE MS Gulf Coast, from the LA to AL state lines, Hancock, Harrison, & Jackson counties. In fact, I think it is what they call the Southern 6 so that would include the 3 counties directly north of those 3- Pearl River, Stone, and George. Last numbers I knew for the 3 coastal counties were about 250k so that's why I think it's actually the Southern 6.

Live in Long Beach ms, one thing about downtown Gulfport a lot of the town was filmed for the astronauts wives show. The largest Cruz for classic cars is all down the coast. Lots and lots of places to go and do. Great for retirement and also families. I moved from small town Virginia to here and fell in love and have made it my home and started a family. I work at the shipyard and also going to be in the air force reserve and be based at Kessler. My great friends are chiefs in restaurants down here. it’s great eating and also there is always something going on down here.

My late mother in law lived in Pascagoula Mississippi. Just a little ways outside of Gulfport. She passed away from a heart attack at age 69. I still miss her. I was in my 30's then. I'm 69 now!

2:51 The route you took on US 90 you would have passed the site on 90 where Jayne Mansfield died. The car she was a passenger in, ran into and under a semi. Her daughter, actress Mariska Hargitay was also in the car in the back seat asleep. Jayne's driver didn't see the semi. Today when you see these big rigs you will notice a red and white steel cross bar on the lower rear of the semi to prevent cars from going under the rig. That device is called the Mansfield bar because of what happened on that highway in 1967. You would have passed the death site on 90 near Slidell.

There used to be a marker where the accident happened. But it disappeared. Probably due to the storm (Katrina) Heading west on US 90 in Louisiana in between the 4th and 5th bridges. The problem is you can’t get there due to the bridge has been condemned. There’s a local story that the old timers here tell about the accident. And it centers around a nightclub in Biloxi called Gus Stevens. His daughter’s boyfriend was driving the car.

Please note that the driver took I-10 all the way to Mississippi. He did not take Highway 90. However, you are right that if you take the old Highway 90, you pass the spot where the Mansfield accident took place. It was south of Slidell, on Hwy 90 by the Hwy 190 crossroads, near the White Kitchen restaurant which was a well-known 24-hour rest stop.

Brings back fond memories. You drove past where I once lived on Beach St "Hwy 90" just east of Hwy 49 in Gulfport. Lived looking out over the Gulf. But we moved north many years ago, the place where I lived isn't there anymore. It's a vacant lot after Hurricane Katrina. The picture this man painted of Gulfport is extremely misleading. I've lived here only 7 years. Absolutely the worst place I've ever lived. Homeless wandering around talking to themselves everywhere. Any money the people make, they dump it right into the casinos. Very poor state for a reason, demolition the casinos. The people here are mean and cold-hearted. Rebels I guess?

To be honest, Gulfport isn't the best representative of Coastal Mississippi. This video makes it look nice, but the video doesn't show you the OTHER side of Gulfport - the side full of gangs, vagrants, drug zombies, etc. Now Bay St. Louis, or Ocean Springs which are nearby in either direction are very, very charming, chill, nice towns with thriving art and music scenes. Biloxi is a tourist trap, but has it's charm.

This is pretty cool. I believe at that turn at 4:30 if you looked towards the water there would be the Port of Gulfport and their new building. I worked on the construction there for nearly a year and I was 18 when I started on it. I started working there when it was just a huge concrete slab. I haven’t been there in a while because I got a new job so I haven’t seen what it looks like. But I hope you enjoyed your stay, I live about 35 minutes from Gulfport, and the Edgewater mall is definitely the best place to go

Yrs ago my brother was stationed at keesler..spent a week in Gulfport in 1960. Thought it was soo lovely .. Made it a point to come through on 90 in about 1996... Lovely still.. Decided to move here in 2011.. Lovely clean shoreline lots of great things like Mardi Gras And cruisen..never regretted Blessings to all

We moved here about a 1 year and a half ago from south (very south) Louisiana and we love it here, so much to do and so well kept. Never plan on leaving.

The Ms Gulf Coast is longest manmade beach that stretches 26 miles. If you take tour boat to Ship Island, you' ll see much clearer water. The Barrier Islands make water brown. I was born and raised on Coast and suggest you take the whole coastal tour. Find some Coastal Cusine and enjoy some of the friendliest natives you have ever met. Ocean Springs is nice as well.

yes, the water on the south side of ship is clear enough to snorkel in, however after pulling that 8ft, bull shark up to the boat, I haven't been back out there snorkeling lol

I spent many great youthful days on the MS coast. I haven't been back since Katrina, so I've often wondered how it looked now. Looks like they've done a much better job at recovering than my hometown of New Orleans has. I could easily live there if hurricanes weren't an ever present danger.

We don’t get many hurricanes here. One every 5-10 years. You don’t get a Katrina but every 50 or so years.

@@ItsKLP Louisiana and New Orleans dealt with Katrina and Ida 16 years apart. I hope that it's another 50 years before the MS coast has to deal with anything like that again. Unfortunately, nothing is guaranteed. Plus, as the video clearly shows...if / when the next Katrina does hit, there's literally nothing in the way of any protection.

@@RobdaVegasMailman correct. There was nothing there when Katrina hit, either. A lot has been rebuilt on our coast but there’s still so much empty space. We got Zeta a few years ago but that was nothing compared to Katrina.

WOW! The City has done a Great job with rejuvenating the beaches after the Hurricanes . Looks clean! I just love the old Southern houses surrounded by old Oak trees with spanish moss & Palm trees. The Aerial shot was awesome! Had no idea the coast looked that way. These Ms coastal towns are under rated.

I know yall are visiting but I lived in Gulfport for 10 years and currently live in long beach, Gulfport is the worst city I have ever lived, been to in my life. Everything about it sucks. The fast food places are always bad, the stores are always messy with crazy people. All of the neighborhoods are filled with trash and other things. If you went down 28th street you would change your mind about it. The beach here sucks, the sand is somewhat ok but the water is absolutely disgusting. I'm gonna be so glad to move away from here, to get out of this dump.

My sister was stationed in Biloxi back in 1974 and Gulfport is where I first laid eyes on the ocean, and I’ve been in love with the ocean ever since. Thanks for the awesome video and for refreshing my memory!

I'm so happy to see Gulfport again and that some of the old trees are still standing. We're used to live in New Orleans east in the early 80's and drove that road until Florida, a lot of times. Great job again 🙂

Hey there and thank´s for the vids. For a bunch of years ago, whwn I was employed on a AP-Moller Maersk vessel, we went to Burnside in the Missisippi River, loading grain. It was wintertime and the Christmasholiday was at hand. The last vidios from you, were somewhere down the Gulf of Mexico where you passed a long Causeway to someplace I sadly have forgotten. But I do remember the sunset and I got a feeling from those days in the US, that I miss very much indeed. Best wishes from an old seadog

Protip: If New Orleans isn't part of your itinerary, get on I-12 in Baton Rouge. It's a shortcut, plus you can avoid I-10 between the high rise and twin span (thus avoiding the worst drivers in the world).

I’m born a raised in Gulfport my family history is all over the coast and another thing to know about the gulf coast the beach is one largest man made beaches I believe and my great grandfather Cuevas help build some of the beach locations line and look up the Cuevas family history it’s pretty big

I went through there in 1969 a few months after hurricane camille went through there. It was a Cat 5. The damage was unbelievable!! It wasn't so pretty then!!!

I also saw your video on Beloxi as well as this one, and both look like beautiful places, and at very "affordable" prices. I like the way you shoot your videos, and also cite the cost of housing, poverty and crime rates, to give one a true perspective. All places that have nice weather, and beautiful scenery, and close to the ocean, will not stay cheap for long. I'd bet in 20 years, these housing costs will triple in these small little cities. The only bad thing is hurricanes, and the damage they do to property, so I don't know how this will affect things. Maybe if they can hurricane proof houses, and buildings, and minimize damage, that would go a long way.

Those beaches were absolutely STUNNING! You were so lucky with the weather. Those blues were really BLUE! You can tell many of those houses have been rebuilt/extensively refurbished after Katrina. I'm so dopey that when you said $5 for a beer I thought it was really expensive (But I guess Guinness really isn't just a beer, and I haven't had one in about 25 years anyway. 😄

I personally love ocean springs ...you need to go there ..it is such a quaint little town with the nicest people in the world ...it's like you totally transform when you go over the bridge and leave Gulfport and Biloxi into ocean springs

We did drive through there. It is really nice. Sometime before winter is over I plan on doing a Ocean Springs to Pascagoula video. Will probably include west coastal Alabama as well.

I typed a long comment which I was very happy with and I think you would have liked. But all I have is a smart phone to go online with and I accidentally hit the delete button. Oh well I will just say it was a great tour of a place i have always been curious about. I'll take a stab at recalling what i deleted. I said my parents went to Gulfport in 1982 and thought it was one of the most beautiful places they had been and considered retiring there. Im from the seattle area and i went to Galveston many years ago and couldn't believe how warm the water was. I live on 1 thousand a month social security because I was self employed and made the mistake of not paying into SS. If i had known the cost of living is so low in. GP I certainly would have gone there. But i have a nice apartment in Tacoma. The housing in Gulfport looks much like in Tacoma. Old but well kept up.

What a very cool little city! I was trying the figure out the structures in your opening beach, but I finally figured out that they were palm trees. Looks like a fun place to explore, and the barefoot option is a great one! The ceiling fans on the enormous porches were a surprise, but they make sense. I've never seen them where I live, but that might be an option for an outdoor porch!

As someone who has lived in Ocean Springs my whole life I truly can not imagine living anywhere else it is a perfect place to live it has the feeling of a nice big city with lots to do, but does not have a crazy population and traffic is not near as bad as say Destin Ocean springs Biloxi Long Beach all beautiful places like I said its nice to live somewhere with loots to do with not so many people perfect place to settle down.

In Nov 2019, I was down there visiting a relative and home searching. It was more of a fact finding tour. But I recall LOTS of jelly fish in the water but west of where you are. Went back in July of 2021 to inspect a house but turned it down. But in Aug of 2022, we bought our new house up near Lyman. Moving down there late 2023 from SE Michigan. Though we are not from there, we decided to make Gulfport our retirement homestead. I've lived in FL, CA, HI, WI, OH, KY, MI and CT. Some of them twice and we spent 3 years looking at homes, visiting areas for the right place to enjoy and grow old. Looking forward to enjoying what GP and surrounding areas have to offer, but mostly, to get away from the occasional sub zero temps and snow. IMO, the area has never really recovered from Katrina but that's not really a bad thing. Thanks for your time and making of this video.

Some of the architect around those buildings is absolutely awesome I took plenty of pictures before I moved to California cuz I didn't want to forget some of the beautiful Architects that that's there in Gulfport and right off the coast and up to the railroad that runs through downtown Gulfport from the railroad to the beach is nice anything beyond that gets kind of trashy a lot of poor people live there but between the railroad and the interstate on 49 there's Walmart and there's all kind of grocery stores and fast food restaurants and hotels and places to eat and things to check out

The gulf coast has the best beaches. My wife is from Pensacola. I'd never saw a beach until I went to the gulf coast. What a bargain place to live. Nice beaches and a low cost of living plus reasonable crime rate. One down fall is hurricanes. But that's to be expected anywhere on the southern coast. Another great video!

Florida & Alabama has nice beaches but the water is coastal MS is not great.
