Gulyana I Gujar Khan I Punjab’s Crumbling 900 Year Old Town I Deserted Sikh Samadhi & Hindu Temple

900 years old Gulyana town of about a 50,000 people, just 10 kilometers South of Gujar Khan, was raised to the ground once several centuries ago, by raiders from the West. The second time it was destroyed during the 1947 partition riots.
Before 1947, the Gulyana town center was mostly Hindu and Sikh. The Hindus and Sikh owned all the businesses in the town center and Muslims were their tenants, peasants and laborers. Muslims sold their lands to pay off their debts and also handed over their crop of wheat. The Dewan, Dutt, Mohyal Brahmin, and Singh families were always part of royal elite. Bollywood Star Sanjay Dutt is from the same branch of warrior Brahmin Dutt and belongs to the same place.
Land owners were guaranteed protection from military’s presence in Gujar Khan from the North and a rivulet from the south. This land produced sheer gold and wealthy Sikhs and Hindus lived like kings in mansions make of stone, several storey high. Bakshi Tek Chand, Dewan Prithvi Chand Dutt, Bakshi Moti Ram and Tara Singh were the dominant names of those times. They built temples, dug up wells for the 30-50 kanal holdings each and distributed these lands amongst their permanent serfs. They did however, treat their serfs with respect and gave them a good share of the crop - what do you expect from absentee landlords.
The Sikh had a timber business. Logs from Kashmir valley were dumped into Jhelum River and recovered downstream near Jhelum city to be sold at Gujar Khan. The Hindus were mostly traders, money lenders and retailers. Muslims were mostly illiterate and poor and were destined to stay that way considering the only quality boarding school in nearby Gujar Khan had 95% non-muslim attendance.
During the 1947 riots, one Sikh Bali Singh and one Hindu Lady Banto were killed in the riots but the rest were whisked away with their gold, in the safety of Gorkha soldiers. The Muslim riot crowd burnt to the ground the several symbols of oppression and got rich in the process, during the looting. One Hindu tehsildar had the magistrate’s powers to jail someone for 6 months. The Hindus and Sikh were very friendly towards the Muslims, their women played around with the boys, molvi were not trouble makers then; they cared about their serfs and neighbors’, built schools, hospitals and wells for the general public. No Muslim was allowed into their kitchen however. Balraj, Sita, Beera, Ramu Shikari, Gujrati, Peecha Singh, Mangat Singh, Jawals Singh, Raab Singh, Gurdyal, were the well-known Hindus and Labbu, Gurra, Jagdev, Santa, Paacha, Chatru were the known Sikh of the time.
Several of the old mansion, one dhramsala, one temple, several bowlis (watering hole) have been lost to time. The two samadhis lie one kilometer east of the village. Of these, one is larger, with shikhara (superstructure). The interior of the samadhi is decorated with paintings depicting Sikh and Hindu mythologies.
On the southern wall is the painting of Baba Guru Nanak, with his two companions Bala and Mardana. And, on the western wall are depictions of Ram and Sita with Hanuman and Laxman. Hanuman, the monkey god, is shown paying homage to Ram and Sita.
The southern wall depicts the stories of Krishna, with gopis (milkmaids) and Radha. The northern wall depicts Shiva with his wife Parvati and Vishnu with Lakshmi.
On the western and southern sides of the samadhi are three old wells, two of which are still used by the locals for irrigation. On the northern side is another small samadhi. It is believed that two Sikh notables were buried inside these samadhis.
To the west of these Sikh samadhis stands a Hindu temple. Intricate floral designs decorate the interior of this temple. The temple is believed to have been built by Bakhshi Moti Ram, who was the grandfather of Tek Chand. Tek Chand embraced Islam after the partition. His wife and three sons left for India. Tek Chand married a Muslim lady and had seven children. They are all in poverty now.

میرے شہر کہوٹہ ضلع راولپنڈی میں بھی دو ہندو مندروں کے منار کھڑے ھیں اور دو گورودوارے بھی تھے جن کی بڑی خوبصورت عمارتیں تھیں لیکن اب موجود نہیں ھیں دونوں گوروداوارے میں دیکھئے ھیں ایک گوروداورامیرے گھر کے سامنے تھا جس میں 1980 تک سرکاری پراٸمری سکول تھا عمارت مخدوش ھونے کی وجہ سے محکمہ اوقاف نے گہرا دی اب اس گوروداورے کی زمین محکمہ اوقاف نے اہل محلّہ کو لیز پر دی ہوٸی ھے دوسرا گورداورہ مھاجرین کو لیز پر دیا ھوا ھے اسکے علاوہ گورنمنٹ ھا ٸی سکول کی تاریخی عمارت جو کے برطانوی دور کی 1926 میں تعمیر ھوٸی تھی دو منزلہ خوب صورت عمارت الحمد لله اپنی اصل حالت میں کھڑی ھے کہوٹہ کا تحصیل آفس جو کہ 1876میں مکمل ھوا اپنی اصل حا لت میں موجود ھے انگریز دور میں تعمیر سول ہسپتال کی عمارت موجود ھے لیکن اب یہ بطور اسسٹنٹ کمشنر آفس استعمال ھو رھا ھے شکریہ مشتاق قزافی کہوٹہ

گیلانی صاحب بہت عمدہ ولاگ ہے آپنے پنجاب کی مسجدوں کی جو بات کہی ہے وہ سچ ہے مگر سو فیصد نہیں ۔آج بھی بہت اچھی تعداد میں مسجدیں ہیں جیسے لدھیانہ کی جامعہ مسجد اور شاہی مسجد سر فہرست ہیں اور بھی بہت سی مساجد مغلیہ دور سے لیکر آج تک کی شامل ہیں پاکستان بننے کے وقت بہت سی شہید بھی کر دی گئیں اس وجہ تقسیم ہند اور چونکہ ایک حصہ پنجاب کا یہاں ہے تو تین حصے پاکستان میں ظاہر ہے پنجاب میں مسلمانوں کی تعداد ویسے بھی کم تھی اور تقسیم کے بعد اور کم ہو گئی مسجدیں ویران پڑی رہیں اور ٹھیک وہی حال جو آپ نے ولاگ میں مندروں کے بارے میں بتایا وہ مساجد کے ساتھ ہوا پہلے سکھوں کے سب سے بڑے دشمن مسلمان یا یوں کہہ لیں کہ مسلمانوں کے سب سے بڑے دشمن سکھ تھے پھر وقت نے ایسی کروٹ لی کہ یہ دونوں قومیں آپس میں بھائی چارہ کی مثال بن گۓ جو کہ آج تک ہیں جیسے وہاں مندر ویران مل جاتے ہیں ویسے ہی یہاں مساجد یہ کسی کو کیا الزام لگایا جاے کمی تو ویران کرنے والوں کی ہے کسی کی عبادت گاہ یوں ہی شہید نہیں کی جاتی جب آباد کرنے والے سو جاتے ہیں تو یہی ہوتا ہے یہی دنیا ہے صاحب وقت اپنے آپ کو دہراتا ہے کبھی جو عروج پر ہوتا ہے وہ زوال کا تصور بھی نہیں کرتا مگر زوال والا عروج خواب زرور دیکھتاہے میں تو سمجھتا ہوں کمی ہماری قوم میں ہی ہے کسی کو کیا الزام لگایا جاے خیر صاحب اپنی صحت کا خیال رکھیں اللہ آپکو صحت تندرستی اور ترقی عتا فرماےء آمین ثم آمین آپکا انڈین بھایء

Ayub sb is my cusion and I am also thankful for him and I am very happy and surprised about his knowledge on history of this place .Well I would like to add few things about this Mander. Now my age is 65 years and in my childhood i passed many years here . At that time this place was not in such rough condition.at enterance there was a room, at its door a marble name plate was embedde and durig a rainy day the room was fell down and that marble plate was burried in the stones of wall which could throw light on the date of its construction and many other things. I was not able to read it , perhaps it was in hindi. There is also a place near govt girls school it is situated at the high place of the villege under that place ppl dig to get mud and found ornaments now the pieces of broken kitchen utensils under the depth of earth can be seen .

Brother, an old haveli of Sikhs is also very nice to see on net.its in Kontrilla village some 05 km ahead .my village is also near it.i want to share a story that in 1980 ,an old sikh lady visited from India to gurdwara panja sahib hassan abdaal where she saw a police man performing duty inside.she asked that police man are u son of a Muslim lady named ...the boy said yes.she told him that your mother was my friend..how u can see that a women after along time remember her childhood friend and recognise her son even she did not see him before

I clearly remember Babas visiting hrs wd end at 7:30 am. Rarely it wd close at 7: 45. Sundays was rest datys n Saturdays i think only morning visits. Morning too ppl were allowed to visit him, i think 11 am to 12 pm or 12:30pm. Which one i cant remember.

You can visit Sukho , GUJARKHAN . Too much old Sikh buildings, school and hospital ( now in the name of Government), shops. Next to Sukho is Kar-nali (کرنالی) name is got changed, basically was Kaurnali ( sikh name)

Master Tara Singh was the most influenced Sikh leader and led Sikhs to join india, his village "Harnal" ہرنال aslo on Mandra-Chakwal Road nearby to Sukho. In fact, the Sukho Union Council office uses a portion sikh House, with many sikh houses in surroundings as well.

Wearing handkerchief while passing away assumes significance alongwith the term My Friend. Maintain Distance. When I use to visit Gurudev he use to mk me sit near him when giving pravachan. When I was absent n wd visit him in the evenings, i wd c the ppl sitting at a distance fm him. Evening pravachan times i think was 5:30 or 6pm. I think 6 pm cause Mom passed away on 6th April.

Gilani sahb, temples can only be functional if there are Hindus in the area who want to use. In this area is there any Hindu? Still at least the temple is standing. On the other hand there are Muslims living in Punjab but mosques have not only been demolished and land put to some other use. There is no trace left of these mosques.

I am not interested in mosques and temples but heritage. If mosques were demolished in East Punjab, it was wrong. If we don't preserve the abandoned temples as heritage, that is also wrong. Of course, places of worship are subject to worshipers, but when they become empty, they should be taken over as our past. Now the Mughal emperors are no more, so why are we protecting their buildings because they are our heritage. History and heritage do not have a religion but are common property. These are remains of individual abondoned properties whose owners preferred to move to India with their own choice . There is nothing historical about this haveli & so many others. It should be auctioned & the money used for some public welfare project in the village
