I posted this video to show why it is not a good idea to use anything other than a single shot for shotgun adapters. I was curious and wanted to help show other people that might be wondering what could happen. I am not an expert on the internal workings of all guns, so if I explained something wrong, please don't hound me about it. Just trying to prevent you from making a potentially costly mistake. Did you read on the he adapter that it says .38 Special and NOT .357 Magnum? There is actually a bigger difference in these two calibers than a lot of people think! Short Lane DOES NOT make a .357 Magnum for the EXACT reason that happened to your gun! It is NOT because you used a pump! Call them and they will tell you! I asked them the same question and that is what they told me. Another note, they make a .44 Special adapter. You should not try shooting a 44 Magnum through this for the same reason! .357 Magnums can shoot .38 Special, 44 Magnum can shoot .44 Special, .454 Casull can shoot .45 Long Colt, more powerful cartridges / guns and adapters can shoot lesser powerful calibers, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND! Just a bit of advice so you or someone else doesn't get hurt or killed!

A .38 Special casing is 1.155" long, while a .357 Mag. Casing is 1.290" long; or 0.135" longer. This IS longer than 1/8 inch over the .38 Spl. Plus .357 SAAMI maximum pressure is 35,000 psi, while a .38 Special operated around 17,000 psi . Jamming a .357 into the shorter chamber of the .38 would have "possibly" forced the projectile into the throat (funnel)of the barrel where the casing had no room to expand to release the projectile, then the bullet "could have" acted as a partial barrel obstruction. N0 doubt pressures skyrocketed. Then you were firing old handloads of unknown origin or loadings. They could have been ~H~0~T~ . Then again this MAY have had nothing to do with ANY of the above. Examining the empty casings should offer valuable advice. I'm thinking it Possibly had more to do with why you acquired the Mossberg for $ 100 in the first place.

This wasn't a chamber adapter problem, it was a product used incorrectly problem. These adapters are designed for single shot shotguns not pump actions. And never use a .357mag in a .38special chamber, the other way around is ok but the pressures in a .357 are alot higher than a .38special.

+cdawson198600 Did you read the video description and listen to what I said in the video before you decided to comment? 1. I knew these adapters are designed for single shot shotguns.2. I had a crappy old pump action and wanted to experiment for the sake of the video to show others why they are designed for single shots.3. The .38 special shotgun adapter can take .357 mag rounds because it is a solid piece of CNC'd steel that is thicker than most .357 handgun chambers. It can take the pressure.

Short Lane does not make a 357 adapter max pressure 35,000 PSI. You should have used 38 special, max pressure 17,000 PSI. That's why it is labeled 12g-38sp. Even if the shell fits.
@SpareTimeProjects

I contacted short lane before I even ordered the adaptor and asked if it could handle the pressure of .357 magnum loads. They replied saying they don't endorse it, but the hardness and quality of their steel should handle it fine and therefore should be safe. I was ordering it specifically because I had a bunch of old boxes of magnum rounds laying around but no gun to shoot them, which is why I checked with them first. I may be adventurous and daring, but I'm not stupid.

You are very lucky you are still here man, take it from an avid reloader and someone who has read many ballistics/reloading books, a shotgun round is made to work at a max chamber pressure of somewhere below 12,000cup,the 357mag round opperates at a max chamber pressure of about 40,000cup,the 38 special also works at about 19,000cup max chamber pressure,so what you sortta did was expose the action of the shotgun to something in the area of 4times a shotgun shell's powder charge.

You did something the manufacture said was not recommended and your surprised? Not trying to be a jack-wagon; but apply common sense next time. Who cares about the gun being damaged; I'd worry about yourself. You can always replace a gun but you cannot replace you. Thank you for ending this on a Safety Note.

I had enough common sense to know it wasn't a good idea, which is why I tried it with a gun I didn't care about and I took all the necessary precautions. I did it to show people who may not know some of the potential dangers why it is not a good idea. This way, maybe I can help prevent someone or their weapon from being hurt.

Since the mid 1930s people have been blowing up 38 Special revolvers by firing .357 magnum ammo in them inspite of all of the ammo and gun making companies warning do not shoot 357 ammunition in any gun not specifically marked 357 magnum. Congratulations for being the first to blow up his shotgun the same way. It plainly says on the side, .38 Special. So you decided to see what happened if you ignored that. LoL, now you know.

First, its always risky shooting someone elses reloads. They might have been safe in his gun but not in yours. Backed out primers is a sign of high pressures. A pierced primer can blow gas back through the firing pin hole and damage the firing pin spring. In some designs it can go through the action into your eye. I am glad you were not injured. 357Mag is a pretty high pressure Round. Be carefull with that even in a single shot. Stick to 38 spl. John Davis

You really need to know what is going on with a reload, Yes as I am sure now you know not to ever put a 357 in a 38 Special chamber. The 38 Special chamber is normally shorter than the 357 so a person can not put the 357 in a 38 Special chamber. Thats why they designed the Mag Rounds to be just a little longer than the 38 Special or the 44 Special. A GREAT book to read is 6 guns that takes you through the history of the Gun and has a lot of information about the man who helped design the Magnium rounds we have now. Keith something is the mans name. Its a FUN read. Also I handload ammo and I handload 38 Special and 357 and the cases are just a little longer in the 357 and the preasure is a lot higher in the 357 than the 38 Special. You are not stupid, just inexperienced and very lucky that this is all that happened. Handloads (most people call reloads) are not bad ammo, in fact most of the time the ammo you end up with is better and more accurate than factory loads. But You have to know what is in the load, normally a person rarely shoots handloads someone else has loaded unless they really know them and trust them (my son and grand daughter shoot my handloads). Most handloaded ammo is marked as to what it is, when it was loaded and the powder charge. Your 357 ammo could have been loaded to Ruger revolver specks, and that can be much higher than standard 357 preasures, the Ruger revolvers are designed to take it. Please do not let this give you a bad taste for handloads, it may be something you want to do someday. I enjoy the casting of the bullets and handloading more than I enjoy shooting now. I used to handload so I could shoot, now I shoot so I can handload some more........

Watching this, I was thinking - Oh, crap, here it comes! You kinda screwed up and got slammed pretty hard in the comments. Hopefully, folks considering this in a repeater will see your video. Looks like that was your intent in making the video - I didn't see you blaming the maker. Likely, the adapters would be and continue to be fine for emergency use if you stayed with low pressure rounds - smaller guage shotgun or .22LR in your Mossberg. It's important to stay with a standing breech, like a single shot or a double, for the handgun rounds, especially those of high pressure. Even then, I'd stay away from .357, 9MM etc in the old cast shotgun actions or those with large firing pins (1/8" diameter).

THANK YOU! Finally, someone paid attention and realized my reason for doing this and making the video for it! You're right, I don't blame the manufacturer at all, and I even recommend these adapters. I specifically say in the video that I only tried it to see why they recommend them to be used in a single shot. I figured that if I was wondering what their reasoning was, then others must be as well, so I wanted to find out for myself and everyone else.

HOW is this a 'Gun Adapter Problem'? The title is misleading...there's nothing in your video to indicate any of the problems were caused by the adaptors. More like they were caused by USER ERROR, lack of following directions, inability to think critically and faults with a USED firearm. NONE of which is the adaptors problem. So...why does the title insinuate the issue is the adaptors'? Hmmm, diesel in my gas engine runs like crap, must be the fuel's problem. Pls, change the title or repost with a more accurate title. Perhaps, 'Oops, my bad, adaptors in the wrong gun'
@SpareTimeProjects

This video is titled like this so it shows up in peoples' research of the adapters. If you completely listened to my commentary, you would hear me say repeatedly that there is nothing wrong with the adapters and that I highly recommend ordering one. If you read the direction of my description, you would see that I decided to experiment and try this and post a video about it so others would not try it. Hmmm, guy on youtube fails to think critically about what he hears and reads on a video, must be the uploader's fault.
@MrRocque
@MrRocque 10 жыл бұрын
sparetimeprojects6 I actually did listen to the video and read the comments...doesn't change the fact that the title still insinuates the problem is the adaptor's, not the gun or the user's decisions. YOU titled it, YOU uploaded it, so you're right...it is the UPLOADER's fault. If you want it to show up in searches, use 'tags' and a better title... like "Gun Adaptors and my gun's issues". There's more then enough misinformation, misleading opinions and ill informed 'reviews' on You Tube...should a user have to read the whole description and watch the video to find out your title is only worded as such to garner attention in 'gun adaptor' searches. And what of those searching for actual 'gun adaptor problems'...they should have to watch your video only to find out that its NOT actually about any issues with the adaptors, but rather with YOUR firearm and YOUR decisions? Attention monger much? Let the video garner its own attn, on its own merits. A nice video about 'used guns' and 'ammo' problems that does have some lessons in it. Don't 'suck' in people that are looking for a particular video on a topic that this video DOESN'T actual cover (that would be...issues with the gun adaptors).

It punctured your primer. This lead to the pressure of the gun powder burning to come back into your receiver, as well as propel the bullet down the barrel. Shotguns generally will have more firing pin protrusion than other guns. This will be a common problem in all calibers you attempt to shoot through this gun. .22 LR will not have enough pressure to damage your chamber at all. You're still safe to keep using that .22LR chamber insert in that gun. I wouldn't shoot 3" slugs out of a gun like that, though... Also, you said they were .357 magnum reloads? That's a .38 adapter. I didn't know Mossberg receivers were aluminum - but it makes me glad I got an 870 instead.
@SpareTimeProjects
@SpareTimeProjects 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah I figured shotgun firing pins penetrate more. And yeah, .357 mag and .38 special are the same diameter just different cartridge length, so you can do it. I don't think the aluminum receivers make Mossberg any less reliable myself, but there are little things I like and don't like about the 500 and the 870. For instance I prefer the trigger safety of the 870 over the tang safety of the 500, but I like the cycle lever and lower price of the 500.

I had a Mosberg. POS! It was at my Dad's place when he died and I lost track of it. No loss. I suspect you have a shotgun problem not an adapter problem. The adapter is a massive hunk of high grade steel. There is likely a reason why there is a difference in the two springs. You might enquire with the factory about upgrades and-or recalls on the gun in general and specifically the spring. I suggest you sell the Mosberg put some more money with it and get an 870. I never regretted spending the money. The other worthy gun would be any American single barrel, I have a New England but all the American guns are good. Walmart sells a single made in Turkey I think. Fair quality from what I can tell. I was stationd there in the Air Force and saw a few, handled one, didn't shoot it. It seemed OK. Looked like a copy of an Amercan patten but can't attest to implementation metals etc. I like my little N.E. single. My go to gun for pest control and any sort of general knocking around. It was a gift from a friend so worth every penny he paid for it! Seriously they run about $100 and worth it! .357 operates on a much higher pressure than .38Spl. The same is true of .44 and .44 Mag. Probably other cartridges as well. In a pump I'd stick to lower power pistol cartridges which don't much exceed the pressure of .38Spl. Wiki and many other sources list pressures. Also I have a NEF single 12g. I'd use it for an adaptor but I'd feed my Rem. 870 12g and in a pinch just low pressure pistol calibers in Shortlanes. Hope that helps

Thanks for nice review and exploded view of mossberg. Well I am going to use adaptors in my maverick 88. I am not interested in single shot shotgun as those are too limiting. There are other people who put up videos of using mossberg 500 with adaptors and they didn't report any issue. I guess that's because they didn't use high pressure cartridge like 357 magnum. But overall mechanically pump shotgun should be strong enough fire any pistol caliber rounds... with exception of firing pin which is designed for 15K-20K psi max. So if there is too high pressure in firing chamber (44K PSI with 357 magnum), then it may eject backwards as happened in your mossberg. So if I stick with lower powered pistol rounds like 22lr, 45acp and 9mm and I think adaptor should work fine in my maverick 88.

I sorry but you are wrong the action lock keeps the bolt lock engaged. When the trigger is pulled the hammer strikes the action lock which disengages the action lock which unlocks the bolt. The forearm slide has nothing to do with it. If it did you would be able to unlock the bolt just by sliding back the forearm slide when ever you wanted to but you can't when the shotgun is cocked. You have to push the little button to disengage the action lock to empty the gun without firing it. All the forearm slide does is move the bolt back once it's unlocked to remove the spent shell and reload a new shell.
@toddy2519

+Warlock359 "All the forearm slide does is move the bolt back once it's unlocked to remove the spent shell and reload a new shell." The bolt lock moves down when you begin sliding the forearm to the rear...and when I say bolt lock I'm referring to the locking lug under spring tension that moves up into it's mating recess at the back of the barrel. What you are referring to is the action lock contained in the trigger group/frame. I've taken gunsmithing courses on the 500 and have built a number of them from just parts, so I'm aware of how they operate.

Ok, just a few thoughts here. I noticed you said 357 mag ammo and the adapter is a 38 special. Now you can shoot 38s in a 357 but you can NOT shoot 357s in a 38. The 357s are longer and wont fit in the cylinder of a 38 but the adapter may have let you and the reloads may have been shorter. But that might be why the firing pin was pushing the primer in so far. Im glad you are ok tho. This could have been very bad.
@SpareTimeProjects
@SpareTimeProjects 10 жыл бұрын
No, that shouldn't have been the problem. The length of the round in the adapter doesn't matter, as it is the same bore through the length of the adapter. There is no cylinder to barrel gap like a revolver, you simply place a round in like you would place a shell in a break action shotgun.
@selkiemaine
@selkiemaine 10 жыл бұрын
sparetimeprojects6 Actually, there's something else involved. The .357 runs at higher pressure than the .38, so there may be an issue unrelated to the physical size of the adapter. Given that they clearly had the room in the adapter to fit a .357, why wouldn't they mark it that way unless there was a reason not to?

Funky old pump action and funky old reloads. And you used non-recommended .357 in a 38 special chamber. The reason that single shot (Or double barrels since both are break downs) shotguns are recommended is because the round is locked against the solid body of the receiver and not a temporarily locked bolt. You should have used your Beretta. Even hot reloads would have done fine in these super thick chambers. Shoot junk through junk and you'll junk your junk...

Pressures issues with other shotguns may have been a problem ??? but when I got mine they said don't do it. Really loving them, I have seven different ones for my H&R and all are great.

There are numerous reasons, why, they recommend a "Crack-barrel" single shot, shotgun. #1) It is for a Bush-gun, few moving parts, extractor especially.#2) It's supposed to be light, compact, easy to use, easy to take apart. #3) Big one, you are never supposed to just drop a shell into an auto or pump chamber, the loading mechanism in these types of guns are designed to feed from the magazine, a single barrel "extractor" mechanism, is designed to just drop a shell into the chamber.

now the reason these adapters are safe to use in a single shot shotgun,is because they (the adapters) are made of the same stuff as rifle barrels which is a harder/stronger steel than shotguns (which tend to be not to far above milder type steel),and instead of an action that is not meant to withstand that much pressure in the form of whats called bolt thrust, on the bolt of the action,single shots have that solid chunk steel instead, which is a harder/stronger steel than the barrel.

No it's the reloads and the fact those adapters should only be used in single shot guns or double barreled shot-guns where they break open. Firing extra hot hand loads are a bad idea any way even if its the right caliber of ammo if you use way too hot of ammo it will blow your gun up.

Well, sir, the manufacturer of the gun adapters had no directions posted about using them in a pump action shotgun. Therefore, it was not posted. Therefore, I decided to try it, and then show anyone that views this video that one should not attempt it. If their directions specifically said "do not use in a pump action," I would have never tried it. Also, safety warnings come from testing and feedback, so maybe the manufacturer will see this video and modify their user agreement.

G Wubllu Honestly, I expected it to just possibly ruin the ejectors with the weight of the steel adapters. And I did ponder it, for a couple WEEKS while I debated whether or not to order an adapter and try it because I didn't have a single shot gun at the time. But I took necessary precautions and I knew it would only be dangerous for the guns internals, not me. So I risked my gun to show other people what could happen, and luckily it was only a $12 fix. And I know the video is long. I tend to ramble and go too far into details, and I accidentally held the camera too long in one place while I was thinking about what I was saying. Not my strong suit but I am getting better with my later videos.
