I'd like to say that, even though you said "No one can ever replace Barry," I think Chad does very well as a co-host. Barry was an amazing man and we all love and miss him. Maybe you were a little worried about how he would be received over Barry as a co-host but I'd like to say that Chad has does a very good job at keeping the audience entertained, giving good information and also doing entertaining videos like the .22 LR silent rifle. Keep it up Chad! While Barry was an irreplaceable icon, as a host, you do it well.

Honestly, to me, it's not even about that. In my eyes, precision is not about how small your groups are, but more about how far out you can keep a good group even with a beaten-up 30k-rounds rifle. It's about taking the most out of a given system, not to fit the system to your needs.

Accuracy is being able to hit an intended target while taking into account all external factors. Precision is a rifles ability to fire multiple rounds to the same point of impact (withing reason) You can buy a precise rifle, but accuracy comes from the shooter.

I’d argue that accuracy as it is defined in a technical context fits better to the amount of deviation from the weapon itself ignoring the shooter. No one seems to agree on what words to use for what however so it’s fortunate we have context!

Very good response, that's exactly right. Precision is nothing more than bullets going in a consistent, tight group while a firearm is oriented the exact same and there's no wind. You can certainly buy that. Accuracy is consistently putting that group where you want it to go, and that takes actual skill.

You can buy accuracy, but you can't buy the skills and basic fundamentals WITHOUT spending enough time (and ammunition) to improve them; however, it is much easier to find out what your shortcomings are with an intrinsically accurate firearm than a sloppy one.

You’re correct. Shooting fundamentals are of the utmost importance. I remember years ago going to a highly motivated class where the teachers were kind, caring, and gracious individuals. The thing I remember most of all, is, these men went out of their way to install these fundamentals, I mean in such a way that I would never forget, and it prove useful when the time came to demonstrate my ability to hit the target, moving or stationary. The first thing we learn was to make it personal. We would go on for days chanting, “this is my rifle, there are many like it, but, this one is mine…” O.K. they were not the kind of individuals you’d let date your sister, but, I’d follow them into a hot LZ with no questions asked. I started only shooting service rifles in the Navy and hadn't done so in several years. Getting into guns over the last few, I started with a high-end dream gun and had a blast. This allowed me to be fairly accurate while starting out and learning how to get even more accurate without getting discouraged. I'll always focus on sharpening my fundamentals but having the luxury of being able to hit what I'm aiming at can largely be attributed to the equipment. Great video, as always Eric and Chad!

The guys at my range said you usually spend as much on optics as you do on the rifle to get a perfect build. I was fighting with accuracy with my mini 14. The problem ended up being the cheap scope I had on it. The vibration from the rifle rattled the scope to death pretty much. Mini 14's aren't meant to shoot long distance so a scope is useless unless you have impaired eye sight so I went with no scope. I shoot it with factory sights now and it's fine.

Great video. I bought a Mossberg 100 ATR in 30-06 cal. I wish it would have come with iron sights, but I put a Center Point scope from Wal-Mart on it. Was shooting 3/4" groups till someone dropped my rifle and broke the reticle. Sent the scope back and they replaced it for free. Now I have to find time to go sight it in again. Lesson learned; don't loan out the only deer gun you have.

Love my bushmaster x15 e2s carbine. Gave me 2 feed problems in the first 20 mag runs in 556. That few of jammed shots isn't a terrible break in. In 223 it ran like an insane beast. Hits 20yrds with the red dot with ease and I hadn't shot in years when breaking in the rifle.

I got myself a 308 Savage 10 Stealth and a Bushnell Elite 6-24 for plinking and hunting. In my mind a very good example of a sub 2000 $ platform to which I added an Atlas bipod. So far very happy with my toy... just had to switch the base for a 20 MOA one, the factory one I maxed the elevation a still a solid 2 minutes under bulseye.

I bought a second hand Remington 700 with a heavy barrel. Less than 20 rounds fired when I picked it up. The guy that had it first had a lot of work done and it shoots really good. I can stay in a 4 inch circle at 500 yards all day long. At 100 yards it shoots right in about .400. Now like all rifles I have to do my part as well. If I'm sloppy about setup and how I get tucked into the rifle that accuracy goes right out the window. On last thing. Dang that gun is LOUD!

I've got a ruger american predator in 6.5 creedmoor with a primary arms 4-14×44 scope on a 20moa base and I hit 1150yds just last weekend. Ive got just under $1000 into it and its fantastic. I dont think you can beat that for under $1000 bucks unless you get an incredibly good deal on a used rifle.

Sometimes you do get lucky and find a budget gun that for whatever reason is just insanely accurate. I bought a used 1979 Ruger M77 in 30-06 a few years ago and when the barrel is cold you WILL put the first 2 rounds of Winchester facory ammo in the same hole at 100 yards and the third shot will be touching or within a 1/4 inch. I've done it multiple times when I shoot it each year to make sure it's still zeroed. I just have a Nikon Buckmaster scope on it and a total of about $600 invested. I would love to see what that gun is truly capable of at longer ranges and hand loads but that's not what I bought it for and as they say "if it ain't broke don't fix it". But I have no doubt it would out shoot a lot of high dollar rifles.

The right gun does help. Everyone is different so what's good for one isn't for another. It took a few smaller handguns to find a full size p226 40 elite was the best for me. Accurate from the start. Hard to conceal. If there's a will, there's a way to do it. So, fanny pack for now. Hitting a big gun show for other ideas. An AR is my rifle. Low recoil helps with accuracy.

This is a question that has been asked in a variety of the contexts that I've been exposed to, throughout my life. Many years ago, I worked in music retail. I was constantly seeing people who couldn't play an instrument, walk into the store with mom or dad and, a gold card later, they'd walk out with a mega-dollar guitar. Years later, as a competitive cyclist, I would occasionally come across someone who obviously had very deep pockets, riding the quality of bike I would've killed for--and they could barely average 10 miles an hour on a ride around the block. A similar condition exists at the heart of this video: can you buy accuracy? Of course, you can buy a highly accurate firearm but, as we all know, it's the person behind it that matters. Here is where it gets interesting: as I've occasionally re-visited this topic, from time to time, my viewpoint has changed. Whereas I used to be somewhat disdainful of those who would buy the best when their talents were minimal, I get it, now. There really is nothing wrong with someone buying a top-notch guitar, or bike, or gun when they lack the skills to match it. The real point is that that item they've bought has its own magnetism. It's going to draw them in--to play more, to ride more, to shoot more. These things are inspirations. They inspire us to want to be better, to put the time in and actually get better. Not for nothing, I know of more than a few cyclists who started off not being able to pedal their super-bike around the corner at much beyond a walking pace who later became quite formidable competitors....

Speaking of quality bolt action rifles. I recently picked up a Winchester XPR chambered in 308 with a 20 inch threaded heavy Barrel. I could absolutely not be any more pleased with this rifle especially for the price point. I've been running 165 grain SSTs, out of Hornady match brass, with 44.5 grains of Varget behind it. 3/8 moa groups or better off a bipod! No problem hitting 12in targets at 600 and even popped some soda cans!

You mentioned that you're just getting into long range shooting. The best money you can spend now that you have the right rig is on a long range shooting class. I've been into LR shooting for a couple of years now and my first long range course had us shooting out to 1100 yards on the first day. It actually saves you a lot of money down the line to get good instruction.

The last match I shot I shot 1st and 3rd. I got 1st in both heats but they didn't go by separate heats and the wind picked up. I had the highscore of the day overall including the match class, with a bone stock savage mark II with a cheap BSA scope and cci standard pills. It was a 50 yard bench shoot. After my first heat people saw my score and people were all watching me shoot the 2nd heat like I was a magician or something. They were like taking notes. Just know your rifle and what it likes and have your skills as a rifleman.

I took my 1984 R700 '06 to a rifle smith about improving it's accuracy. Same thing lapped the locking lug and touched up the trigger. It's like a brand new gun now.

I bought the same aac-sd 700 308, dropped it into the magpul stock, timney calivin elite trigger, bushnell tactical elite optic and it shoots great. I think I got a tighter spec off the line because she will make 1 hole at 100yds. shot just over 1in at 200 last weekend. but I believe chad is spot on that sometimes the spec can be way off and its a lottery if you get a really good rifle or a pos.

That 'Hankin's Custom Rifles' guy seems to know what he's doing. He seems to work on a lot of Rem 700 short actions and fits them with a nice barrel on whatever caliber you want. He also makes smokless muzzle loaders.

I bought a Mossberg .270 hunting rifle for $275 new from Walmart, it shoots just over a half minute. With a $59 6-18 power scope. You really can get lucky buying a stock rifle but from what I understand talking to other people who have bought basic Mossberg's I was really, really lucky for get under 1moa.

Great Video guys. I do want to point out one of the big mistakes made in purchasing weapons is the belief that the more you spend the more accurate your rifle is. There is a point of diminishing returns on cost vs accuracy. One of my favorite comparisons is savage model 10 vs Remington 700. In the not too distance past, Remington was selling the model 700 SPS (.308) with a cheap hogue stock and horrible trigger for close to $850 dollars. Savage was selling a model 10 (.308) with an accustock, accutrigger, 5R rifling with some actually being suppressor ready for about $700. Now to get that SPS up to the accuracy of an out of the box 10T-SR or 10FCP-SR, you would have to spend several hundred dollars more. (Now before the Remington guys go nuts and talk about all the great remington rifles, and Remington has and continues to manufacture some great rifles, this is an example of low to mid level rifles in the same caliber at roughly the same cost point and with one you can get more for less). Savage touts, MOA out of the box. I like Savages but there are other equally accurate rifles from many manufacturers out there. Lesson here is know what you are buying and spend your money wisely.

Cz 452 varmint with center x ammo or sk match is very accurate and im only using a crappy little bsa 3-9x50 scope at 50m im getting 5 round groups which a 1p penny covers up really do love it rem 700 that i use at the club i shoot i was getting bull eyes at 500 yards its a nice little rifle

Good Video. Gadgets and gizmos aside. I find that most people don't want to work too hard at accuracy. Instant gratification is what they want. and in a way that is Human to want that. I like what you said and pointed out about the K-31. That rifle is a Marksmanship tool to be used as such. Improving skills is a priceless procession and cannot be bought anywhere. Wilson Combat makes great AR barrels. I have 2 Wilson builds that are 0.5 MOA. Also Ruger American rifles are really nice budget bolt guns.

Very interesting video. Agree you can buy accuracy but what level meets your needs AND can you shoot to the level you bought. I shoot with a gunsmith that builds rifles for customers. He feels that very few of his builds will even come close to the accuracy they are capable of in the hands of the buyers. The buyer is happy and he does what they ask and want to pay for. I know some people who have fantastic shooting rifles but seldom shoot them. I am not sure its not a collector mentality? We all fall in one of three basic categories that can overlap Hunter( weapon is basically tool ) SHOOTER (likes to shoot whether a 22 or whatever -spends money on ammo!) and Collector( loves their guns does shoot some but owns most guns of the groups).

I agree that the barrel is one the most important parts to accurate ars! But the bolt is the second. With just a basic bcg you wobt tighten up the group's enough. Trigger is third.

You know I feel you gain accuracy through practice. I love my Savage x11 trophy hunter with the stock optic that came with it. I can easily take deer at 300 yards. I do want to replace the stock to a wood stock that is properly bedded so I can tighten up the group a little. However it works great for an off the shelf. I feel a lot comes with the expectations of the shooter and their skills. If you cannot keep the firearm still you will not be accurate.

The most accurate my rifle is the Bushmaster XM 15 e2s. Even my Rüger GSR (bolt action) is inferior to her at a distance of 200 yards. I bought her because it is the most similar to the M-16 military rifle and I did not make any upgrades. I'm not a real sharpshooter, but a well-made weapon helps, of course, to shoot better.

There are four primary variables in relationship to accuracy..... Shooter, firearm, ammunition, and environment... all of which are intricately interdependent.

One disagreement on the mosin... I use this red star mount I got years ago that I drilled and tapped to the side of the receiver.. much better for me than anything attached to the rear dovetail bridging over the ejection port. I tried most of those systems. I just wish it had came in 30mm

Yes you can to a point. BUT you still need to have the skills needed eg technique of pulling the trigger, reading your terrain in front of the target and knowing how to setup your gun correctly.
