According to Wikipedia: The verb "to snipe" originated in the 1770s among soldiers in British India where a hunter skilled enough to kill the elusive snipe (a type of bird) was dubbed a "sniper". The term sniper was first recorded in 1824 in the sense of the word "sharpshooter".

Carlos Hathcock is a textbook example, supporting your statement: Carlos, and company dragged a giant M2 atop a hill. Mr. Carlos simply added a sports scope, and turned the monster machine gun, into a precision instrument. Also, with a M2 you get a 45" barrel which gives 25% - 35% more energy than a Barrett.

I am a former army sniper. What these two are confusing is what a "sniper rifle" is used for as opposed to who uses it.. According to their argument only a "sniper" uses a sniper rifle. Now if my I use "a rifle" is it a sniper rifle? Again If I use a rifle (which is designated as a sniper rifle) and somebody else uses that rifle is it no longer a "sniper rifle?" The answer to both questions is "no" You do not have to be a trained sniper to be a "sniper" the term sniper originated in the Boer War with the Boers using their best shots to shoot a bird called a "Snipe" which then became dinner. As far as I am concerned a sniper rifle is any rifle that a sniper would use in combat. In other words a sniper rifle is a sniper rifle regardless of who is using it. If it's got a scope, bi-pod and consistently shoots 1/2 MOA or less out to at least 600 meters (660 yards) then it can be termed a sniper rifle. May I suggest that we stop playing semantics.

I feel a lot of folks get tied up with weapons though that aren't necessarily multi purposed by design and just kinda starstruck with their look. I mean a rifle like the CheyTec Intervention isn't the same as, say, a Remington 700 which can be used for hunting as easily as military sniping, where as an Intervention is designed for military use first and foremost. Nothing would stop you from hunting deer with it and it would be very effective just not practical. A gun like that I'd say calling a dedicated "sniper rifle" is passable, but I do agree with a lot of your perspective :D

I agree. It's not the rifle but the person behind it pulling the trigger. People used to call me a sniper, because I was so comfortable with my rifle and the way it shot my reloads I could consistently hit even running targets at 5 to six hundred yards and stationary targets well beyond. Believe it or not, (plenty of witnesses) It was a Remington 742 in 30.06 shooting my reloaded sabot rounds. It's the person and their skills that make a so called sniper. And it's not just a good shot that makes a "sniper" it's balls of steel and courage beyond what most people have. I respect and appreciate what the military sniper does for our country... I was under the impression that the term "Sniper rifle" was not a genre of weapon but described how the weapon was used. the definition of a sniper is roughly something like: A skilled marksman, usually military, who engages targets/enemy combatant from a distance and from a concealed position. You can say that snipers can have other goals other than just shooting people, but this is immaterial to the argument and does not change the definition. The one common job that every sniper has is shooting a target. He cannot be a sniper if he's just reporting on enemy positions, and his job title requires nothing more. therefore wouldn't any rifle that sniper uses to snipe, be considered a sniper rifle? Does it really matter whether the rifle was originally designed to hunt deer or people? I also agree with Sherlock Holmes's statement that "Just because you own, say a M40A3 marksman rifle, standard issue to US Marine sharpshooters, doesn't make you a sniper". Again it's back to my argument that being a sniper rifle is a matter of circumstance, not design.
@Turgz10 жыл бұрын

I think you guys ended up getting "assault weapon" and "assault rifle" mixed up. "Assault rifle" is a very specific term that is actually used in the firearms community, usually defined as having the following qualities: 1. It must fire an intermediate cartridge 2. It must be select fire 3. It must have a detachable magazine So therefore belt-fed weapons in an intermediate cartridge like the M249 wouldn't be Assault Rifles, selective fire rifles in a full power rifle cartridge like the G3 or M14 wouldn't be assault rifles, and semi-automatic weapons in an intermediate cartridge like the AR-15 or Saiga wouldn't be Assault Rifles. Like anything though, the term can get muddled, so if you get a select fire rifle like the RPK or M27 that fires from a detachable magazine and uses an intermediate cartridge they could be called "assault rifles" per se, but a term like Squad Automatic Weapon would probably be more suitable. "Assault Weapon" is the invented term to define semi-automatic rifles that have qualities which are arbitrarily deemed "dangerous" or some drivel like that. The media ends up using the terms interchangeably though, so that's why there's some mixup. Speaking more to the topic of the video though, I funny that people call scoped rifles "sniper rifles", because one of the most successful snipers in history, Simo Häyhä, preferred to use his ironsights in lieu of a telescopic sight.

Valid point, the .338 LM cartridge was purpose built for anti-personnel, and the .408 Chey Tac for anti-material and HTI, now we have sporting rifles in those chamberings, but for no other reason than there are people who will drop the coin on such a rifle capable of reaching out and touching something, because its fun and challenging. Most private individuals who can afford the rifle and ammo in those chamberings don't have much to be pissed about that would cause them to risk their life and gun rights by using it in an unlawful way. So even the purpose built calibers are not always 'sniper' rifles. Don't analyze this too deeply and don't quote me, there are responsible gun owners in all segments of society...and that's the way it needs to be to protect our rights. God bless America.

A lot of good wisdom here from the video and from the comments. Even among snipers, as pointed out here, different rifles suit different purposes. Usually the 82A1 is for materials and vehicles disruption. Although it is also good for some long distance. I watched a vid with the guys who developed specs for the MRAD designed by Barrett for SOCOM. This particle is stock and action and 3 barrels and bolts. .308 Win, .300 Norma Mag, .338 Norma Mag. .308 for training, .300 for anti-personnel interdiction, .338 for materials and vehicles. In practice the .300 Win Mag and the .300 Norma Mag (you can also get the kit with .300 Win Mag and .338 Lapua Mag) have a great BC in variety of circumstances. You can dial your distance and then hold left or right, based on the wind. So, the sniper's assignment may determine which set up he is using. My favorite book on long range shooting was written by a guy who was in the Rangers 1/75. In combat, average range of engagement was 800 yards and less. Often less than 500 yards. So, yeah, the short game becomes really important. Which is where the semi-auto rifle rounds shine. The "battle rifle." This was echoed by the retired Navy SEAL who set up a training place in Normangee, Texas (between Dallas and Houston). In training, he could shoot thousands of yards but on assignment "in country", it was urban scenes at 800 yards and less. And from what I have seen of them talking, what is just as important as marksmanship is the sneak. Getting close to target without being detected. In fact, it is a big test to pass in sniper school. In fact, you could say that sniper is a job and job description. In the Rangers, it is an MOS. Also, in the Marines, with the Scout Sniper. As opposed to being in either a regular or other special forces unit and one guy has had training with long distance shots (500 yards and more) is called the designated marksman. Which doesn't mean he is specifically a sniper sent to take out a bad guy. Often times, he can overwatch. Set up on a good spot and providing kind of long range cover for the others. And, like these guys said, a lot of it is just recon. As a tool of the trade, these guys have expensive and rugged optics. Scope on the rifle, sometimes a rangefinder / binocular. Spotting scope. So, they can see really far and relay information. In fact, they might not take a shot and their data informs a drone strike. But I agree, it is the human, not the tool, that is important. A race car driver is what he is, regardless of the car he is driving.

So why does the military call the M24, M21, M2010 "sniper weapon systems" when they add on bipods, optics, silencers, special stocks, chassis? Because they were designed to kill people by a trained marksman. You say that guns are just guns without any characteristics or labels of their own and I would disagree. In fact you proved my point for me. By calling a Savage 10 a 'hunting' rifle, or any rifle a 'hunting' rifle, you are using the word 'hunting' with a pro-gun spin to label the rifle as if it was designed only for sport use. When you mentioned the Police rifle- the term coming from the manufacture no doubt, obviously Police are going to use it to shoot at someone if they have to. A .50 BMG anti-material rifle, as you've said, that's designed to shoot material objects. Some weapons are designed for sniper use. Plain and simple. I believe it is fair if you are going to call things designed for hunting or designed for engine blocks and radar dishes, you also call a rifle designed for a trained marksmen to kill a person a sniper rifle. You can hunt with a .50 BMG if you felt the need, maybe not legally. You can hunt with a Police rifle if you don't plan on lugging it around as you said, you can obviously hunt with a Savage 10. Just like you can be a 'sniper' with any of those weapons as well. But some guns are designed and purpose built to kill people. So if you're not going to call a tactical Police rifle a sniper rifle, don't call a Savage 10 a hunting rifle. I understand what you're saying, I'm a pro-gunner NRA card holding member of society. I own a Remington 700 with a 5R Milspec barrel a Leupold optic and a bipod like an M24. Now do I plan on hunting with it, sure. But if North Korea invades and parks themselves in my backyard, I could easily attempt to take some of them out too, despite my lack of official sniper training. I'm sure if I got lucky and took one or two of them out from concealment they wouldn't hesitate to call me a sniper. Really I just got it because I want to hit steel at 1000 yards some day as you've said. But I don't call it a Remington 700 Hunting Sniper Steel Rifle. Really I'd be more apt to call it a sniper weapon system as it's modeled after the M24, has a hard case with a cleaning kit, mil-dot book, dope book, and the list goes on. But I have no intention of shooting people with it.
@visageliquifier363610 жыл бұрын
Yeah - I agree there. Some of their gripes are a little less about guns and more about politics and the way they view guns. I wish they would separate it all out. I wouldn't call someone a sniper if they hid in a dark alley and shot someone with a snub-nosed .38 as they walked past. Based on Eric's definition of someone shooting from concealment, that would fit.
@lawfreefly10 жыл бұрын
Well said. "You can't have a sniper rifle without a sniper behind it." A little off-base. Some of the bull-pup weapons shown would not be considered as a sniper rifle, but a Steyer SSG in .270 Winchester or 30.06 with a false rear trigger that sets a hair pull for the front that requires so little pressure, you simply need to think 'pull" and it fires, would be used by someone as a sniper rifle, but not a hunting rifle or even a Sportsman Gun, like so many dealers like to call Aks and Ars.
@deejay153410 жыл бұрын
Its because those weapons have been HEAVILY MODIFIED to perform exclusively for the role of the sniper, so they have significantly increased accuracy, reliability, custom ergonomics for the shooter, etc. The scope and other accessories are also usually high precision, not just standard issue gear.
@deejay153410 жыл бұрын
For instance, a standard Remington 700 that i can buy at a gun store or gander mountain is significantly different from an M24 SWS, which is based off of a 700. The difference is that the SWS is more reliable and can shoot sub MOA, while the regular 700 shoots maybe 1-2 MOA, sub in the hands of a well trained shooter.
@deejay153410 жыл бұрын
I. All realness though, just join the military, then you'll realize those significant differences in the world of firearms. Obviously the guys who made COD or Battlefield, or those bandwagon media reporters don't know crap, because they've never used one or handled one. If not, just talk to guys from the military. Its those who are uneducated who make a bad name for firearms community in the long run.

An Assault Rifle is a select fire weapon... I'd think that people working at a gun store would know this...
@glenwood8942011 жыл бұрын
They are using the term assault rifle in the meaning that the media uses it in. I'm pretty sure he even says that the media uses the term to "demonize" the firearms...
@obeastness11 жыл бұрын
select fire on a rifle doesn't make a rifle an assault rifle, it just makes it more fun to shoot, a rifle only qualifies as an assault rifle if it has these three qualities, 1 selective fire, 2. fires an intermediate cartridge 3. has a detachable magazine. I'd also like to note that assault rifle is just a category of rifle, these rifles are designed with specific military applications in mind, Assault weapons which is a term people confuse with assault rifles, is a separate thing, I think the name assault weapons was picked because it would be deliberately confusing.
@poseclop11 жыл бұрын
obeastness From what I know they created the STG to mix a sub machinegun with a rifle, this way, german soldiers could shoot accurately at longe range and switch to auto when getting close to the ennemy. They started to equip assault troops (Sturmtruppen), hence the name assault rifle. Today, pretty much all troops are equiped for assault so the name doesn't really make cense anymore but the idea is still here. You switch fire mode as you get closer to the ennemy.
@MatteV211 жыл бұрын
obeastness Correct. They still try to claim that the term "assault rifle" is unaplicable to any type of rifle, which is wrong. And it is the term Assault Rifle they use, and not Assault Weapon, which makes me really annoyed, because this video, at that point, becomes little less than poor pro-gun propaganda, used to sway the less intelligent to their side of the argument.
@maxfirepower11 жыл бұрын
MatteV2 Well thank you Field Marshal, for the clarification. Do you attack as vigorously the MSM who hijacked the terms for their propaganda value, or do you just come here to talk down to "the less intelligent"? Just what have you contributed other than your AIRSOFT video? Pfft.

I have personally seen a Barrett chambered in the infamous .50 BMG that was assigned to a platoon, not a soldier. The purpose of this rifle was for clearing IED's, disabling vehicles, and various other anti-material applications. It was not called a sniper rifle, it was not called the designated marksman rifle. It was referred to as the M82. The snipers in our platoon used the M98b and M24 rifles. YOU HAVE TO SNIPE WITH IT FOR IT TO BE A SNIPER RIFLE. Precision Rifle is safe to say.

I've always hated the term, and was very surprised to see another channel start a series even surrounding the "sniper rifle." Thanks for posting guys.

Let's be honest here , certain firearms are designed for certain applications , if a firearm has been designed for automatic fire accuracy and mobility ....it has only one use taking down a human being in a situation that requires the above ie an AR which makes it an assault rifle, if it's designed to be highly accurate at insanely long distances whilst prone ....again one purpose and it isn't target shooting or game hunting , it's tactical targets be it human or mechanical.....ie a "sniper" rifle ....guns are designed for one purpose, to kill a human yes there are variations but it's invention was to kill humans so stop trying to say otherwise

@Chivs7710 жыл бұрын
Callum Turner how is this ignorance , if anything your own answer shows the height of ignorance , guns were designed to replace bows and spears for killing , modern day guns such as the above mentioned weapons aren't designed for sport shooting , their sole design is to kill

I totally agree with you, Any rifle is only a rifle unless you have a person trained behind it. I was a Sniper in the 82nd Airborne Div. 2504 PIR Recon Plt. A true sniper is a person trained to take any weapon they can use to eliminate the target. Believe it or not, being a sniper is more than shooting at a distance. It's stealth, concealment, being able to access the surrounding and target location to be able to get with in an acceptable range to make a one shot kill, then get back out.

By the definition given a pistol can be successfully used as a sniper weapon. Great distance was not given as a criteria, only concealment. Even a thrown knife could be a "sniper knife" if successfully used from concealment, like a dark shadow in an alley. I like the clarification. It also goes back to the idea that "guns don't kill people, people do". Guns make it easier, but so do cars and kitchen knives.

I know it's just a movie but it makes a good point - "Shooter" the guy is a famous sniper with an appropriate rifle yet at one point he has to use an old .22... there really is no such thing as a sniper rifle but there is such a thing as a sniper. The training is intense with many separate skill sets - patience being the main one. Whatever rifle you put this sniper behind becomes a sniper rifle at that point & any professional sniper worth his salt can make the job work with most any half decent rifle & scope. BTW you can also be a sniper with a handgun... if you are shooting from cover at someone who doesn't know you're there - basically, you're a sniper.

"Sniper" was first used to describe hunters of skill in the 18th Century who shot snipe, the bird. As the Snipe was considered a very challenging game animal but not much use for consumption. Most military units have replaced sniper with designated marksman or scout.

well said and done video. I am a now retired Army 1SG and I did serve as a sniper in the 325th and 75th infantry regiments. its not a sniper weapon, it is called a sniper system because of many the components used for the mission at hand. by the way the M21 sniper system is still my favorite (M1A springfield) and the M110 SASS (semi auto sniper system fromknights ind the SR22)

funny, i recall you having a video "Top 5 Zombie Defense Guns" where you called the R700 bolt action rifle a "sniper rifle" i mean all enthusiasts are going to know technical terms. like i bet you call "gears" on your bike but its called a chain-ring or cassette, motorcycle is called a sprocket. but at the end of the day its how we communicate and understand one another in conversation.

I have a custom Remington 308 that shoots 1/2 MOA at 600 yards but I ain’t no sniper I’m a painter. I just call it my Remington, I just spend lots of time shooting. Hopefully I never have to shoot at people, but capable if need be. Also have an AR15 shooting dimes at 300 yards. Long range shooting is an ADDICTIVE hobby but very satisfying.
