Barry was a great guy and we all miss the hell out of him.

@Iraqveteran8888 My favorite moment of Barry is in early Gun Gripes, where he's describing the Kitchen Gunsmith rifle with one Weaver ring shoved with toothpicks, and a shoelace for a sling! Another good one is Gun Slang "Where your Dillingers at? Barry: John Dillnger? Oh, you mean a Deringer!" Operator Headspace: Ok, last one, "She didn't know you had to pull the trigger!!"

MGS 2020 Grad here. Can't say enough good things about the course. While I haven't gotten a job as a gunsmith I am the go to guy for my coworkers and friends for firearms work. I've done everything from full restorations to glass bedding and simple fixes like bent or broken firing pins. I still use the reference materials and tools all the time.

Did you learn anything about basic machining? For example do you know how to tram the head of a bridgeport style mill? I'm just curious if they teach stuff like that. Used to be a basic skill for a gunsmith but these days most don't know how to do it. What do you do for a living?
@pachuagfirearmsrestorationsАй бұрын
@armorers_wrench MGS did not teach me that. I have a machinist friend who showed me the basics, plus I graduated from a tech school in the mid 80's. Most of my experience is just trail and error on my mill and South Bend 9 inch.

Guns are basic machines with basic mechanical interactions. They aren't rocket science. With a little understanding, some talent, care, safety, and patience... Being a gunsmith is something anyone could do. I looked at SDI and talked to them. Even though I have an A&P mechanics certificate, have taken all the basic required courses, have done practically everything on their projects list except checkering a stock or engraving, and I already own 90% of the gunsmithing tools I'd need for their school... They don't recognize any of that. So, needless to say, they convinced me to save my money, not waste my time, and stick to being the gun hobbyist I've always been. I figured it would be a good job to do part-time, when I'm semi retired... Anyway, I enjoy doing my own work.

SDI is stupidly overpriced. I looked into them too and ended up going with MGS. For less than the cost of SDI, I could do the advanced course with MGS, take some machining classes at my local community college, and buy a lathe and a bench top mill.
