About Hollywood, it is also about expectations. People expect suppressed guns in movies to go 'pft', anything else would be distracting and them out of the movie. Similar to sci-fi movies: explosions in out space have to be audible even though there is no atmosphere to carry soundwaves.

@@joshparnow9044 It does feel similar to an airsoft or airgun. However, most movies exaggerate by portraying it as if someone outside a bathroom door wouldn’t hear anything. There's no such thing as a sound "barrier". We've been fed that term since jet engine technology and aircraft design allowed flight speed exceeding that of sound in the atmosphere. The projectile produces a pressure wave that can be heard by humans as a crack, bang or boom, depending on the size and shape of the projectile. As aircraft were flown at supersonic velocity, the shockwave was given the name "sonic boom." Decades ago, there were very few dealers in class 3 arms and equipment. Phoenix had J. Curtis Earl and I had a friend who wanted a Tommy gun so I took him to Phoenix to meet Mr. Earl. Since his home was in central Phoenix, firing a Thompson submachine gun in the backyard would be too loud so he brought out a MAC10 with its suppressor and loaded 4 rounds on the magazine. The first round was fired in semiautomatic mode then the switch to full was selected. Each shot was virtually silent, but the bolt slamming was like clapping two bricks together. The rate of fire was so slow that I could distinguish the individual shots. The clapping of the action was loud enough to be able to hear clearly at some distance, making it mostly pointless to use a suppressor.
