My binary ar22 required some serious attention. Took me 10 months and THOUSANDS of rounds before I got every detail ironed out. One click out of a mag is sometimes enough to say “good enough” on a 22. Last weekend she ate 125 rounds before she choked on the drum and ran another 125 flawless after I went back to stick mags. Sometimes the “gun hobby” takes patience, especially with 22 as I’ve found. Thank you guys, I really appreciate all the knowledge I’ve gained since becoming a sub 2 years back.

Gun Gripes? Are you old enough to remember when you could legally own & bear arms in America? Remember when there were "gun stores" that had guns & ammo for sale? Remember when your purchases didn't require your banker's co-signing? And if you're old as dirt... Remember when criminals were blamed for the evil they did and not the tools they used?

I was USMC armorer 04-08, running M9 pistol ranges. Every time I had a pistol that would failure to feed it was because the Marine had a magazine that had the spring in backwards and it wouldn’t properly push up on the round into the feed ramp. After the range they would clean their weapons, some of them would disassemble magazines and clean them too, putting spring in backwards

I’ve learned to keep a dowl rod on hand using mil surplus ammo as I got a squib load and needed a smith to tap out the round that was stuck half way down the barrel. A multi tool a wood rod and lube and cleaning supplies always in my shooting gear! Great vid. Learn to listen to the sounds your gun makes and you’ll know when things like squibs happen.

Friend of mine had purchased a tokarev fairly recently. first time we took it out the slide cracked. so he was able to get one from the company he bought it from, after he changed the slide it was having issues extracting and ejecting rounds. So he got a spring kit for it and swapped everything out but still had the same issues. So we figured it could be the barrel link checked that out and seemed alright on the end pinned to the barrel and figured take a couple days and think on it. stopped by his place a few days later and took it apart again and I figured I'd stick the slide release/take down pin into the barrel link, had about a 32nd of an inch play on the top and bottom of the hole and a little less front to back. so waiting on a barrel link to see if that's the issue. Probably my most puzzling gun sluething I've done.

Loved the topic. A few things to remember: first, gear is the greatest culprit to failure. As a former TI (Technical Instructor) and trainer of apprentices in my adult life, I have found fear to be the greatest debilitating factor. I always found myself telling my apprentices; “ It’s already broke, what’s the worse you can do?”. The other thing is; not everyone has the dynamic “holistic” mind set needed to be a troubleshooter. In my almost forty years as a trainer and tech I’ve had to tell quite a few; “This is not for you.”. It’s a hard thing to say, but a whole lot better than setting a person up for future failure. Keep up the great work, thanks for your service!

I had a "squib" round go off in a kel tec sub 2000 a few years ago when I first got it. I was rapid firing and it blew up in my hands because one was stuck in the barrel. I didn't have to re-rack the action though... It was on exactly the 100th round too lol. It blew the magazine out of the handle and cracked the receiver. It felt like my hand was slapped really hard. No injuries though.. Kel tec repaired the rifle at no cost

my weirdest situation ever was with my Wasr AK clone. I took it to the range when I first got it, and it fired 40 rounds exactly and then stopped. I couldn't pull the bolt at all. I cleared the magazine, took the cover off and peeked inside. The trigger spring had gone sideways and popped out the side of the rifle. For the life of me I couldn't understand why it had done that, so I took it to my gunsmith and he told me that some yahoo had forgotten to loop the U shaped spring around both of the posts in their entirety. So essentially the spring was only halfway assembled and never made full contact, so after firing a bunch of times the spring had worked itself sideways and then popped out the side. He fixed it without charging me and I went back to the range happy as a clam.

I second Metaberry’s comment. They’re an essential part to put in any AK. They’re way more secure, make it easier to disassemble and reassemble, and usually only cost around five or six bucks.

A few years back I took my new AR build . All name brand parts , to the range for it`s first run. Right off the bat I was having light strikes about 50% of the time. The range officer a former marine armorer took my rifle down and could`nt figure it out. So home it went and i measured all the BCG for mil spec and slowly went thru the entire rifle and finally figured out it was a weak hammer spring in the new kit, Won`t mention what brand it was, but now good to go.

I finally got so frustrated that I pulled it all apart and looked in there. There was a small chunk of brass or primer bouncing around in the receiver. Blew that thing out and it never had another issue

You are absolutely right, sometimes the magazine is the problem with your gun. I had an experience with a used police surplus Glock, where the magazine spring was the reason for failure. The firearm would function fine for 5 rounds or so then it would completely fail to feed, or the new round would jam the slide. A new spring in the magazine and voila it runs like new.

I built an AR 18" rifle length gas system and the first round I loaded got stuck in the chamber and the bolt wouldn't go into battery without assistance... after replacing several expensive items I happened to watch one of your videos where Chad was building an AR and lapped the upper, that was the problem... the upper was out of true to the point that when I torqued the barrel in it would draw to the left far enough that the gas tube was coming in at a strange angle and holding up the bolt. The round that got stuck in the chamber? Unrelated :) it just happened to be bent slightly from the factory.

@Alexander Larson In 1987 they banned semi auto centerfire rifles, in 1996 they banned all pistols. Though anything not semi auto with a barrel at least of 12 inches and overall length of 24 inches is allowed. So lever actions, semi auto short barrel .22lr AR-15s and such are ok. The long barrel pistols are technically rifles, hence the .357 taurus revolvers.

A few years ago I bought a 91/30 Mosin after watching more than a few of your videos, and a Brown Bear box of 20 154gr to go with it. When I had it out on the range for the first time it was on point, just couldn't miss with the thing, but on the eighteenth round out of the box I had a squib that barely caught my attention at all because I observed an impact at the target, but I felt reduced recoil and heard a muffled sound. The bolt was stuck after the shot but after beating the bolt open and removing it I found the round had moved about 2" into the barrel, the case had a considerable amount of blowby in a spot on one side of the neck. When I cleared the barrel of the bullet its tip had been blown off. After that, I fired the last two with no issue, and every box of Brown Bear I bought after that performed without issue.

Good video. A few months ago I started having issues with my G26: I wasn't able to engage the slide lock / release, preventing me from fully racking the slide back and engage the slide stop lever. I posted on the glock forum and got several suggestions but nothing seemed to work, so per the advice of Glock I took it to a local certified Glock armorer. He quickly determined that the wiring on the recoil protruded slightly over one end of the recoil spring assembly (the end that points backwards). Very difficult to spot unless you know what to look for; the armorer put the bad RSA and a good RSA side by side and I had to take several close looks. Glock sent me a new RSA, and the armorer didn't charge me anything either. My glocks are super reliable, only issue I have ever had so far. This is also the kind of thing I would have never been able to figure out on my own.

I'm in my late 40's, and I decided to use my G.I. bill to take the two-year gunsmithing degree from the Sonaran Desert Institute. It was a great experience and I learned a lot, but I took the program because it was free (to me) and because I enjoy learning. However, I have countless friends and coworkers that are constantly asking me to troubleshoot their firearms. I'm sure glad to help anyone, but I AM NOT A GUNSMITH and I tell them "Well, you can read about small engines for two years, but that doesn't make you an expert on small engines." The point I'm trying to make is that some people (full grown men) have ZERO mechanical skills and they assume that I know everything about every type of action and firearm ever made just because I took a gunsmithing course. It takes years or decades to be competent Gunsmith, and I know this because a friend of mine has been and Gunsmith for forty years and he still struggles with troubleshooting some problems. Gun manuals are great, KZbin videos are awesome in helping troubleshoot firearms too, but step one is not being an idiot! Unload the firearm, get the proper tools (especially gunsmithing screwdrivers,) and clean, clean, clean the firearm first. Many problems simply go away when you properly clean the firearm!

Just a few days ago I found out my gas key was striking the lower receiver where the buffer tube attaches. Noticed some heavier recoil and louder action at the range along with mulyiple failure to feed/extract and stovepiping out of about 60 rounds fired. After some head scratching and frustration I realized the buffer tube was about 1/2 inch too long. Shaved it down with a demel and refit it. Pretty confident with my fix hopefully get to test it in the next couple days 🤞

I said sure knowing his dad for many years and knowing he made quality ammo . I load up a mag and shoot the first round from a hip fire position , next thing i know the AR flew backwards out my hands , the mag was ejected out of the mag well and my charging handle had snapped in half . Come to find out he loaded the rounds with the wrong primers . Disassembled the AR and the extractor itself was cracked in half and that was the only damage , had to order a new one , but easy enough of an install. Had i taked this to a gunsmith he would have charged me well over 100$ to " fix " it.

QUESTION: @16:35 Was Chad basically saying that if you eject the squib round, and there's no projectile left in the ejected casing, it's safe to assume that the bullet is still in the barrel? My follow-up question is: Why wouldn't the next shot fired just hit the squib bullet, sending them both down range? Like billiard balls... If it's chambered for that barrel, why would it get "jammed?"
@offtherip3198
@offtherip3198 2 күн бұрын
4 years late so you probably have the answer by now but for any one else who may ask: when a barrel is chambered to fit a certain round it is chambered in a way that the bullet still contacts the barrel all the way down (which is why there is rifling, the bullet contacting the rifling makes it spin). What he’s saying happens for squibs is an undercharged cartridge (not enough power via accident hand loading or rare occurrence via factory) and when fired does not have the power to overcome that friction in the barrel, becoming stuck. FIRING ANOTHER BULLET SHOULD NEVER BE DONE TO FREE A SQUIB, 2 main reasons: the bullet contacting the second bullet will likely cause the stuck bullet to flatten, these are soft metals after all, blowing the barrel apart. 2nd, the gases released through firing are designed to be released nearly instantly and not be built up within the chamber and barrel. This could cause the action/chamber/barrel to explode.

"3-4 hundred rounds shouldn't cause a issue with that little bit of shooting" that's why I love you guys. My family thinks I'm nuts because they'll buy a singular box of ammo to go to shooting once in a blue moon. I keep surplus and shoot as often as I can afford. Which means I haven't been shooting since the 4th of July 2020 lmao.

Purchased a Zastava CZ999 and had just enough time to do a quick clean and lube job prior to a advanced pistol course. Went to the range and during the first reload the slide did not stay in the locked rear position. I thought it was odd, so I manually locked the slide back and half a second after taking my thumb away the slide slammed forward. Even as a fairly novice shooter I knew something was definitely not right and called one of the instructors over to have a look. After a couple of people took a look at it they agreed it was not safe going to be using and I switched out to my other pistol that I brought and set the 999 aside. Went home pulled the grips off took a look around, took a video and sent the video of me manually locking the slide back and it slamming forward as soon as I took my finger off of it to CZ. They obviously are on the other side of the world but eventually got back to me and told me that there was a manufacturing flaw with the slide lock and that the round disk portion of the slide lock that was underneath the grips should have had a more accentuated cut creating a flat side to the circle and they drew a line over the portion that should’ve been flattened out. So I took the piece off, took it to my grinder and ground it down to their specifications in the pics they sent, then reassembled it. Unfortunately that Didn’t fix it, so I sent another video back based on the new results along with before/after pics of the grind job and waited for further instructions, but this time they did not respond, so having exhausted my knowledge and capabilities without further instructions and knowing they had admitted to the fact that it was a manufacturing defect (just this gun, not all 999s) I took it to a gunsmith who ground it down a little bit further and at a slightly different angle than I had done, put in a different spring, readjusted a couple of other items within that system ( I can’t remember exactly what at this time) and gave it back to me. Now it works great and I love it. So just because a person may be a new gun owner, the ability to communicate via the Internet and send back-and-forth pictures and videos can be a tremendous help to educating yourself and being able to fix a problem. Of course in this situation it didn’t help but this was a very unique situation and like you guys said sometimes you just have to send it in. But I thought it was fun and adventurous and kind of cool to just be able to try and figure it out and fix it myself.

Interesting to hear Auto-Ordnance had an issue feeding and extracting... the Thompson i bought from them in 2007 had a bolt face 0.30" too shallow and the firing pin was so long it punched clean through the primers and into the powder chamber of the casing. WORST customer service ever. Fought them over 2 months, they finally sent me a new bolt that ended up cracking in less than a year. My GI carbine never did that crap...

Here's one for you. Years ago, I had a Ruger Super Blackhawk SAA in .44 mag. I had put around 300 rounds down the pipe. Around the 350th round or so, I was cleaning it, had the hammer at full cock (the cylinder was out of the weapon), I sat it down and the hammer discharged. Had it been loaded, it would have killed my wife. I checked the sear and the notch the hammer locked into didn't look right. Took it to my gunsmith, and it was a factory deffect. Ruger was great send out all new parts for the revolver

When there is a failure to extract, look at the cartridge case shape. Case tapper increases the reliability of the gun. Straight cases work great for hunting, which is a controlled environment. In war, the 7.62x39 tappered case will clear debris before a straight or almost straight cased 233 cartridge. I never here this on KZbin. Maybe because it is obvious. IDK

I’ve been throwing ar15’s together for a while now and have a good understanding how a lot of different firearms operate but I have one that I never could figure out and that was a 458 socom from radical firearms. Got about 80rds through the rifle and it quit going into battery. Initially thought it was dirty cleaned it with no luck. Scoped the barrel just to make sure a case didn’t separate in the chamber. Still never ordered any go or no go gauges. I might one day got tired of messing with it and put it up I’ve taken it out a couple times here and there and mess with it to see if I can find something new but with no luck. I did notice the back of the lugs on the bolt show a lot of wear for such a low round count. If I had to guess some how the head space got out of wack. Contacted radical firearms about it a long time ago and they weren’t much help.
