Well the ATF is undermanned and underfunded. They’re handicapped by laws in place. They’re not even supposed to have an electronic searchable database that would allow them to look up a person and see all the guns they own or a serial number to find a weapon, where it was purchased, and who it was sold to.

Holy shit. What am I watching? A person being interviewed who isn't trying to weasel out of answering questions! Two people actually having a somewhat level discussion. With no blatant evasion tactics. This is amazing! Also, I love how Mr Chipman raises actual practical concerns, like "Where do we store the guns we confiscate". And yes, my reaction also was "That should absolutely not be the thing stopping police from taking guns" but yeah, of course it would be. I mean a guy with 74 guns, plus ammo, you can't just chuck those in a cardboard box somewhere in a basement.

The sad thing, though, is that's just a logistical problem that could be solved with some organization. If we had system in place where the cops were required to take gold bricks from people, they'd quickly find a place to put them and a system to organize it. They just don't _want_ to. It's a clear excuse to not get started on the problem. It's like when you ask your kids to set the dinner table and they whine, "But I don't even know where the cutlery is!" That's an excuse. An easily solvable excuse, that once solved, it's easy to go to the next step.

A small town near me, there are only 2 officers on duty during the day. One of them sits on the edge of town with a radar gun 5 days a week before and after work hours trying to catch people who don't slow down fast enough at the 55mph to 25mph sign.

You need people with a warrior mentality for such jobs. I can't imagine a situation worse than a police officer caught in a criminal situation with a weak mentality. However we need our citizens to treat them with more respect so that such warriors are treated as officers, not a yardstick. The situation with domestic violence highlights the true problem. People's daily lives are becoming more stressful and the family structure is deteriorating. There's a lot that both sides can do, but primarily influencing the front line only weakens your defense if it's done without a solid plan. Firstly we need to get people level headed enough to contain their personal issues within the family, not blow up to a point where your neighbours get unwillingly involved. Not sure how one can stop that entirely.

It seems like the latest youngest group of politicians never took a debating class in their education. These two guys talked about a very divisive issue without it becoming a cluster duck. The way debates are now, is if somebody says something that you don’t agree with you immediately have to start talking so that they don’t say anything else that can be understood by the debate audience. You see it in the House of Representatives all the time, when the chairman is telling people that the stenographer cannot take down your words because no one can understand anything that either of you are saying. When you have the floor, you should not be interrupted until you’re finished , or your time is up depending on the format. And the polite debater is going to get stomped all over by the one who doesn’t Follow the rules of debate that they should’ve learned in school. If you can’t debate effectively, how can you be a politician? Because it’s no longer a debate. Everyone gets up there with their talking points to please the people that voted for them so that they will vote for you again. One more thing. I wish it was constitutionally legal to test people about their knowledge of issues before they’re allowed to vote on them. Because the general public is living, just like the politicians are they don’t care about anyone else’s views but their own. Unfortunately, our citizens come out of school, completely uninformed about how the world works…even how their own country works. civics and ethics have been abandoned for “do anything for the bottom line.” I’m done now.

@@adriannasmiths8262 Maybe because there's already The Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban, which is often ignored, and a recipient of domestic violence is five times more likely to be killed when the abuser has access to a gun. So the argument's a no-brainer and it presents a clear path forward. The suicide issue is equally important but it can get derailed by mental health arguments, religious beliefs, questionable stats (suicide vs. accidental discharge), etc.. As for alcohol and domestic violence, yes it has a major influence. As it has on gun violence, car accidents, all sorts of crime, child abuse, bar fights, divorce, etc., etc., etc.. Not a cause, an amplifier.

That is why Jon, in my opinon, is one of the greatest. Even some of the "woke media" intiverwers do not display this level of interaction because they are too reliant on being too antagonist instead of just having a conversation. And you can tell Jon is coming from a place of true curiosity to learn but still stand firm in his beliefs on whats right and wrong. I just glad someone besides John Oliver really just shines the light on real shit and not whatever the hell is trending on twitter. According to the DoJ report _"Source and Use of Firearms Involved in Crimes: Survey of Prison Inmates, 2016 "_ of 270K inmates surveyed, _"Seven percent had purchased it under their own name from a licensed firearm dealer."_ 2) Gun violence almost always occurs in Democrat controlled cities. This is a no-brainer, just search for the places where all the murders happen and note who runs those cities. 3) The places with the highest gun violence also have very strict gun laws. Another no-brainer, pick any high gun crime area and look at the gun laws. If the laws actually worked, then most of the gun violence there wouldn't be perpetrated using illegally obtained firearms. If the ostensible purpose of the anti-gun movement is to curb gun violence, yet we already know that restrictions do not prevent gun violence, then what is the real purpose of the movement?

I was involved in a domestic situation where my then husband was messed up on drugs and wouldn’t let me back in our home to get any of mine or my childs belongings and threatened to hurt me if I came into the house. The police came and literally let him call his mother to come help him leave the house with his guns and our child. They stated it was a domestic issue and they couldn’t stop him. That’s the moment I realized the police would never help me if I needed them. Not long after that he put a gun to my head and threatened me again. I didn’t bother telling the police but I did file for divorce. The system is flawed

When he said "police are strapped in their budgets" I literally laughed out loud. Police budgets have absolutely exploded over that last 40 years, outpacing ALL other municipal spending by many orders of magnitude. In fact, studies have shown that one of the primary reasons that crime isn't going down is that the social programs that help people in poverty, who sometimes turn to crime, have been cut in order to expand police depts. Not to mention policing impacts so many other state issues, for example if there's a major fire in a state forest, sure you call the state forestry department but you also call the police to assist, what you're not doing is calling the local teachers.

Hell of a lot of emergencies don't happen when people are well educated. The last time I was in a gun store buying a gun. The guy in front of me was an ex-convict in his mid 40's with his elderly mother. His elderly mother was buying him a new hand gun. He kept telling her you have to do this you know how bad the people I am around are. The guy selling the gun knew exactly what was going on and all he did was tell them the convict had to quit playing with the gun and that he didn't have to sell it to them. He also said that the elderly women would have to hand him the money and she would have to carry the gun out of the store. This was at Williams Gunsight in Davison, MI. When you have this kind of disregard for the law from those selling guns. I am afraid that adding new laws will have little impact.

I think we need clear laws stating that the legal owner of the gun is fully culpable for whatever occurs with that firearm. And the owner should have to sign a form stating that for each gun they buy. Basically unless she reported it stolen, that grandma shoulda been on the hook for whatever her grandson did with that gun. It should be like how get-away drivers in a robbery involving murder are charged the same as the ones that did the killing. Mutual destruction can be a very good deterrent. If the ex-con and grandma knew that whatever he did would equally effect her maybe he’d think twice. I feel like that puts less onus on the gun store owner (who may worry about the ex-con coming back to rob and/or hurt him if he denies the sale. There could also be an alert or red flag feature added to that fire arms registry. It wouldn’t be perfect but it would be a start. I think we also need mandatory registration of every fire arm. It’s time to be adults about this. No one should have secret fire arms stashes that the police aren’t aware of. That’s Wild West mentality nonsense that creates a dangerous environment for everyone. They should be treated like cars. No registration? Confiscate it.

Properly funded education has been proven to reduce poverty and rates of crime and recidivism. This shit has actually been studied wouldn't you know, a lot. It isn't utopian to do something new and proven to be more effective by science, it's certainly better than just doing the exact same thing we've been doing for half a century and expecting a different result, that's insanity. Police are expected to do too many jobs, and they are bad at all of them. Other countries are already trying different methods of law enforcement, prison and education reform and seeing much better results in crime and poverty reduction than the United States has seen in decades. It's really annoying to just dismiss something as utopian when it sounds too good to be true, you must be a real downer to be around. it's also worth noting that nearly all mass shooters also have stalking, sexual assault and/or intimate partner violence in their histories so moving the discussion back to preventing them from getting guns for those violations is the best method of preventing those events as well. and if it's only 10 thousand people lying on their ATF forms, they're doing it an awful lot because there were over 112 thousand instances of that in 2017--only 12 made it to court.

The overwhelming and vast majority of cases of "lying on their ATF forms" are people marking that they don't use marijuana when in reality they do. It's rarely lying about felonies (which would show up and flag the background check! whereas drug use isn't kept in federal databases, it's impossible to keep track of) or other more "reasonable" prohibitions on firearms ownership, although I don't believe convicted felons who have done their time and are no longer on probation should have any rights stripped.

For those that are dismayed by the conversation, I understand. But THIS interview is immensely important. It's an honest explanation of the uncomfortable details involved with gun violence. What officers deal with. The real world consequences to being restrictive and giving a hugely important avenue for people who want to limit gun violence in their area. Make the current laws more effective, put gun violence in an honest light and restructure the view of guns. In New Zealand it took 6 days to bring in strict gun laws after the 2019 mass shootings of 51 dead in mosques. It took politicians on both sides to vote 119 yes to 1 no to strict gun laws. Over thousands were handed in with payment as compensation. It's to protect the public and the police as well as they are usually the first responders.
