It's amazing, because I studied to teach Social Studies and finding a History Teaching job became so difficult that I gave up and stuck with a different career path. Now, it appears people want to learn less and less about actual history, when it was rather muddy to begin with. People don't want to learn the reality of our past because some of it makes them uncomfortable. But being ignorant to the facts and truth is the complete opposite of how to fix that. When I hear someone on TV or in a movie say something completely historically inaccurate, even minor, I get really annoyed, but when it's serious and extremely ridiculous I get really angry. I also spent most of my life growing up in Maryland after moving up from upstate New York and remember learning all about Slavery and how it really effect our national and state's history. Thanks for spending so much time teaching the truth and facts, and serving in the Marine Corps!

This is reductive. News journalism exists and it operates on standards and ethics. The “motivation” is to report on stories that are of public interest. Where it gets fucky is when these outlets have to COMPETE with entertainment, because the public (you) does not value quality information, and is certainly not willing to subscribe or pay for it in any way. So this means they have to rely on ad revenue, which means they need to pump up sensationalism and try to capture the dwindling attention spans of over-stimulated Americans. In short, you are actually the problem more than they are. If consumers REWARDED good journalism, then that is what we would have.

The Democrat Party Inconvenient Truth: The 2020 US Presidential election was stolen. The 2016 US Presidential election was almost stolen. In 2016 Bill " Slick Willie" Clinton was the con man. Donald Trump was a Republican "plant" recruited by Bill Clinton to help Hillary Clinton win the 2016 US Presidential election. The Clinton election theft plan backfired because Donald Trump couldn't stay ahead of Hillary Clinton's continuous damaging Wikileaks. Part One: Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Donnna Brazile all publicly claimed that the Clintons rigged the 2016 Democrat Party nomination. Wikileaks proved this. Part Two: New York Times reporter Amy Chozick wrote in her book "Chasing Hilary" that in 2014 Bill "Slick Willie" Clinton "casually encouraged" Donald Trump to run for President in 2016. Why would Bill "Slick Willie" Clinton do that? Part Three: May of 2015, one month after Hillary Clinton declared her candidacy for President in 2016 as a Democrat, Bill "Slick Willie" Clinton called Donald Trump and they talked about Presidential politics. Three weeks later Donald Trump announced his candidacy for President in 2016 as a Republican. The Washington Post covered this story. Now you know the truth! I think it was Jon himself who pointed out how the media landscape changed post-9/11, in that every news story became a critical, breaking news headline. The drama of presenting events, particularly events involving war, natural disasters, mechanical mishaps, and political intrigue have distorted our ability to differentiate between what's important, what's not, and what's being underserved. Once the corporate boards of major news networks saw the spike in viewership after the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon, they knew that their round-the-clock coverage would be able to keep them on the ratings charts, all while crowing about how critical their coverage is to the public. I'm of the mind that 24/7 news in the age of digital transmission has made for a reactionary news base. I'm of the age that remembers "the evening news" when a familiar anchor would come out and read the day's events in a tone that could put Mr. Rogers to sleep. No embellishment, just the stated facts, and if it was really important, you'd maybe follow up with morning radio or the newspaper the next day, or wait for any updates coming the next evening. But now it's instantaneous. Now you have to be the first to report so that you don't lose viewers or appear to be falling behind. And every story is carried with equal measure and weight, every headline displayed in the same font, all given in the same delivery. It could be a hurricane landing on the Atlantic coast, or a plane that went down over Iowa, or a statue being removed from it's plinth, or an organized protest taking place in Brazil - all these stories are brought to the public as being critical to note. Look at what's happening now with the war in Ukraine - hardly anything domestic gets spoken about with the same intensity or prevalency. It IS important, but this hourly update routine is exhausting, because they're turning a travesty of geopolitical warfare into a spectator sport. In the same way that I listen to sports analysts going over the details of trade rumors, or game predictions, or player injuries, news anchors and the pundits they hire to come give "expert insight" are essentially doing the same thing - trying to second guess what's about to happen, or even more egregiously, declaring a victory before one has yet to surface. It's not the way people need to get informed. It's watered down entertainment for political junkies and partisans.
@Girl2TheCity2 жыл бұрын

Actually, that happened with the advent of CNN, not 911. That was going on LONG before. The fact is that the news was ALWAYS biased and was never 'news', it was what three or four corporations wanted you to think. That hasn't changed. Just now in 'the economist' their headline is how 'humanitys fate is hanging on ukraine'. Thats odd that they didn't think that when Iraqis or Afghans were dying. Compare the news from Ukraine with how Iraq was reported. Hell, in Iraq they wouldn't even show soldiers coffins returning from Iraq. THAT hasn't changed from, well, EVER. Analysis of reporting from the seventies on Vietnam and Indonesia, where the US was providing arms showed just how biased the media is. And it shouldn't be a suprise, news from an empire will of course favour the empire. Romans didn't hear news critical of the Roman empire but about all the horrible things the savages did. THat of course should not be taken as any kind of comment that lets Russia off the hook for the invasion, I think the attention it gets is how it SHOULD be handled. But Iraq and Afghanistan and places where the US illegally invaded should be discussed in much the same way. To be fair, like Russia, at the time there were the largest protests ever recorded AGAINST the war. It didn't stop the war, but when governments are clearly going against the wishes of their own people should be something the media focuses on, but of course isn't going to.

One of the problems is that there is never enough real "news" to fill 24 hours. There isn't enough local news to even fill 30 minutes, usually. This is even true with internet - shows (whether its KZbin or TikTok or Facebook or whatever) have to fill time with something. But that doesn't mean a person has to watch all that crap. I'll always remember "Summer of the Shark" where you couldn't turn on the news without hearing about shark attacks. It started with one dramatic incident that captured people's attention, but then the media glommed onto it. They reported every time someone just saw a shark, and over-hyped everything. Really played into people's fears and made it seem like shark attacks were on the rise, when in reality there were fewer shark attacks that year than average. Stuff like that is why I didn't take COVID seriously at first, until I actually read what doctors were saying. Over-hyped banalities from the news media is so dangerous, but at the same time I feel like it's so difficult to discuss it with nuance because you'll always get the damned conspiracy theorists and the far right folk saying, "see we told you libtard new media lies". The amount of energy they put in to uncovering Democrats, if that was applied universally and cogently, then a lot more people would've taken it seriously and not dismiss it like they do with MTG space lasers or existence. I've always watched a variety of outlets for news knowing that no one place has it all. However, after watching Viva Frei's Live Stream during the Canadian Trucker Rally I will NEVER watch again. What was reported LIVE and what was reported on the NEWS were not the same. This only made the Spin more obvious. Jon Stewart is a shining STAR of wisdom and honesty. So glad you are back!

That's not true. Was the mainstream news lying when they reported that pat king was an organizer and racist who thought white people had the strongest bloodline? Viva only gave on the ground video. He never dug deep into the organizers and people putting the event together.

Part of the problem is the abundance of 24/7 "news" channels that are in constant need for new information and content all the freaking time. When was the last time something wasn't "breaking news?" Each agency has their own demographic, which they need to reinforce their audience (thought bubble) - which is why Fox is right-wing and the others lean left (or far-left). You know what might be neat - a source of unbiased, un-editorialized news - it would last perhaps 30 minutes each day (reporting just the facts doesn't take that long) - then we could opt-in to editorialized content if we desire or have absolutely nothing better to do. Watching a lot of those clips when they got to the "if true" part - I noticed many of them had an undeniable smile and excitement that Trump could be going to jail - if true.
@harmreductionman44742 жыл бұрын
I'm a journalist full-time. You're 99% right, but I'd be very hesitant to say there's any far-left cable news network in the U.S. Even MSNBC was largely skeptical of Bernie Sanders, with Chris Matthews comparing his primary victories to the Nazis conquering France and going on a rant about how "if the reds had won the cold war I would have been executed in Time Square" when people criticized him for it. There is no mainstream news network in the United States with a communist or even socialist orientation. Unfortunately our political spectrum is completely imbalanced and that's why you see Fox News expounding openly white supremacist rhetoric whereas even our "far left" networks are spooked by a social democrat from Vermont.
@Flaschenkatze2 жыл бұрын
We got that in germany. Unbiased Media without bullsh*t. Costs tax money, cause - surprise - someone has to pay. Many germans want to abolish that to save the ~30$/Month. "We get our information on social media". *sigh*
@NedTesco2 жыл бұрын
"others lean left (or far-left)" What do you mean lol. There isn't any large scale Left media in the US. Being "pro-Democrat" isn't automatically left. These channels regularly employ ex-GOP people, and still tend to reflect the views of big business, even if to a slightly lesser (and less insane) extent as Fox News.
@JasonTaylor-po5xc2 жыл бұрын
@@harmreductionman4474 I think we might have a different idea of where the "center" is. Fox is certainly right to far right, but I don't recall any white supremacists talk - some are pretty pro-Trump, but that's about it. I don't watch much of any of them these days since it is mostly OpEd junk. Just get a few tid bits off KZbin and carry on with life.

Such an important message to the media which I fear will be ignored by the people that need to absorb it most - I'm so sick and tired of the media beating everything up, it's so draining, disheartening, and numbing - no wonder it's difficult to keep electorates engaged on important issues. Endless cycles of nauseatingly recycled conjecture, "expert" opinion, lies, propaganda, fear, outrage and anticipation-peddling often just built on bs or nothing new or of substance.

@j wallah I suggest you go do some more research. They already lied to you about the story, don't let them fool you again with the "correction". The Russia collusion story has been found to be 100% verifiable false. That's an undeniable fact. It goes well beyond the Mueller investigation. It was a complete fabrication of the DNC and Clinton campaign, in collaboration with the MSM and members of the intelligence community. The FBI admitted to knowing it was false back in 2016, and allowed investigations to go forward. Steele dossier analysts, along with sources linked to them, have been charged with lying and fabricating the whole thing.

Mueller's investigation was a big nothing burger that Bob himself knew would fail from the start, but he strung it out for the full term of Trump's Presidency to allow the media to cast a negative light on Trump through leaked lies. In the end, the media was left to throw a tantrum for how unfair it is for Trump wanting "to protect his Presidency". So the media is now upset Trump didn't roll over and accept all the lies they made up for years. This is a true narrative, and anyone will be furious if personally subjected to this kind of treatment for years.

Brand is and always has been an attention seeking moron with little to no wit at all. He, like many others right now, just realized KZbin is where it's at. I was interested when I learned about the stuff he talks on his channel, so I listened into one of his bits, sounded reasonable for a minute or so, so I turned it off and thought nothing of it. Much later I was bored out of my mind and somehow stumbled across one of his other bits. Listening in more than just a few minutes almost made me feel sick. The guy uses the arsenal of people like Stewart, Chappelle and so on, but only to present himself. Nothing he speaks of he provides depth or his own opinion for, because he has none of that. Done no research, has no opinion. The reaction he shows to the things he presents are a dead giveaway, it's Tucker Carlson-level disingenous. No disrespect for that, many more people rely on this sort of clownery to make ends meet these days (and you and at least 80 other people enjoy that sort of thing, so there's a market), but styling himself like a prophet for truth is mildly off-putting, to say the least.

Trust is essential to everything in society to work well. A growing number of people in Western nations have lost faith in democratic governance, science, and free press, turning instead to conspiracy theories. The fraying of trust is tied to the rise of the Internet. Believers are more likely to get their information from social media than professional news organizations. At the same time, with lower budgets and higher competition, they are trying to get the atention 24h delivering things that aren't news at all or do it in a bad way -> besides fake news, it also generates incomplete stories or without context creating wrong perceptions. Because the motivation is to make money, not to properly inform their viewers.
