It has many different names, but the most famous movie version is Josie Wales flipping two Colt Walkers simultaneously. Now THAT would be a trick.

Don't know how historically accurate that is, but in the movie you speak of he didn't that he flipped the gun upside down and fired with his pinky. It's more commonly known as the border roll or road agent spin.

*"I believe this is actually called the road agent spin or the coachmen’s revenge."* I've heard it called all three of those names at various times. Like a lot of Old West lore, the origin story is quite unclear, speculative, and prone to a couple of embellishment's regarding who supposedly created it, where it was first used, how it was used, et al. I myself thought the "Curly Bill Spin" was a variation in which the shooter cocks the hammer and fires it with the middle or ring finger while holding it inverted, as depicted by Powers Boothe playing the role of Curly Bill in the most excellent 1994 Western "Tombstone."

@@gregrock7451 I have a hard time doing it the way he does it by holding the gun inverted. Such a cool move and with holding it inverted it really almost looks like an accident, which is what Curly Bill claimed in Tombstone if I recall.

If you watch that scene again he fires the right hand gun upside down whilst fred was grabbing the left one by the pistol grip. There was no spinning involved. That being said this video show a unique gun spin

I heard that Hardin used it to get the drop on Wild Bill Hickock, though why he was supposedly obliged to do so, I've no idea. I also heard that Hardin simply demonstrated it to Wild Bill, under wholly chummy circumstances, shortly after the two men met. In the latter version, Wild Bill was said to have been sufficiently impressed. Both men were widely famous/respected/feared gunslingers, and thought to have been mutually respectful of the others' skill and prowess behind a gun, and that in turn led to them becoming close friends. Of course, like most Old West lore, there are varying accounts.

I havent handled a revolver for 40 years but it seems to me the last move to cock the hammer is very awkward.The thumb has to come off the hammer after cocking to allow it to fall but you need the web of your thumb to counteract the pull against the trigger.
@dark2023-1lovesoni
@dark2023-1lovesoni Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's much easier/smoother to cock a revolver's hammer during a forward roll. You can just catch the hammer as it's coming up, cock it, and then slip right to the grip, in a firing position. This trick is using a backwards roll. Catching the hammer in that is a bit odd because you basically have to catch the top of the frame/cylinder with the webbing of your hand, then you wind up reversing direction. It's just less comfortable and feels a bit more awkward. However, in the actual movie Curly Bill doesn't do much of any spin. He puts his middle finger through the trigger guard and let's the revolver fall inverted. He catches the hammer with the webbing of his thumb and basically fans it once. It's actually pretty easy to do, and doesn't feel particularly odd or uncomfortable.

Sir, (no sarc) I have also heard this maneuver called the "Highwayman's Roll" - I think in the old Time/Life western history books I read as a kid in the early 80s - is that also a colloquialism for this? I have Ruger Vaquero Bisley I bought when I lived in Alaska - I can rock this roll! 🤘🤠🤘 (Lots of time to practice, when living in a cabin in the woods at 40 below! LOL)

Sadly you are incorrect sir. He isn't doing the Road Agents spin like Clint Eastwood did in the film The Outlaw Josey Wales. If you watch the clip at the you tube channel S Films entitled Tombstone (1993) | I feel just...capital - William Brocius(Powers Boothe) you'll see clearly at time stamp 2:11 his gun is hanging upside down. Not the same move as the Road Agents spin.

If you were holding a gun on someone and wanted to disarm them, I can't believe you would let them put their hand anywhere near their gun?? Wouldn't you would make them reach as high as the could with one hand while they undid the buckle on their gun belt with the other and let the gun/s fall on the ground?? or I would put the gun at their forehead with both hands as high in the air as they could reach, if their arms even moved I would make a canoe out of their head, then I would take their guns with my other hand, on the other hand if I was the two bad guys in Josie Wales, I would not have stood in Indian file, making an easy target, I would have been behind Josie with a Gun at the back of his head movies really do make it look easy for effect, don't they?? You will see when the hero fights multiple opponents, the opponents often attack one at a time, movie heroes are just lucky that movie bad guys are always morons
