So glad you are here! Just prayed a Hail Mary for you.🙏✝️ Not sure if you pray The Rosary but it has helped me a lot with anxiety and depression even as an older adult. I'm a Convert to Catholicism and Bishop Barron is one of the greatest gifts I've discovered since becoming Catholic a couple of years now. But Praying the full 4 Rosaries daily has been the Game changer for my mental health which I struggled with all my life. For the first time in my life I feel like I have a 💯 percent reliable tool / weapon I can turn to every single day to help me combat whatever is trying to devour my sanity and Rob me of my peace that day. And it works *every* *single* *day* not just occasionally 👏👏👏 Highly, highly recommend it to anyone who's desperate for help with the overwhelming problems of today's world. As the wonderful St. Louis de Montfort said, "The Salvation of the whole world began with The Hail Mary. Hence the Salvation of each person is also attached to this prayer."🌹🌹🌹 Our Lady Queen of The Holy Rosary pray for Elijah🙏🙏🙏✝️✝️✝️❤️❤️❤️

I grew up around guns! Neither I or anybody else in my family ever harmed anybody, never will! It’s not the guns, it’s the values or lack there of in many of our society. 50+ years ago we were much more armed yet a lot safer society because we were a lot more religious! Religion taught us to value life. It’s not a coincidence that we are becoming much more violent as we become much more secularist. Churches need to reach out to people more instead of expecting the government to do it. No amount of gun laws will solve our violence problem because governments can’t instill values, at least, like religion can.

I don't blame technology I blame the breakdown of the family and community. It's a sense of purpose people need. Another thing is the community destroying moves by the government and organizations (for example the government lockdowns, I mean come on we can't let these people get away with this). The solution is decentralization, or the principle of subsidarity that catholics are familiar with. Bring back control of our communities and communites will build themselves back up and bring back a sense of purpose (Easier said than done).

Preach. No seriously keep preaching. You are right on the money. I teach at a public high school and I can tell you that not only have our emotional, mental, psychological and theological (spiritual) faculties suffered, and continue to suffer, but so to our academic (intellectual) capacities. The battle education faces in competition with social media is incredible. However, like the rest of our world, we are resigning ourselves to the problem and throwing up our hands in defeat. Therefore rather than dealing with the problem, we are simply dumbing down education and academic expectations (even the ones that we know will help create the whole person). Bishop, to be honest, there is one answer - Jesus. Our world that has denied God, is in desperate need of Him. So again, seriously keep preaching.

God gives us strength to endure, it’s because of him I have endured. I’m a single mother with two beautiful autistic children. My husband passed away years ago. I lost my job over declining the vaccine. I declined due to my pre existing health conditions lupus and heart disease. I’ve been struggling to provide for myself and my children since losing my job from Forsyth hospital. But God has given me strength. Strength to keep obeying and serving even when I feel tired and overwhelmed and like I can’t go on. Every month is a battle to not end up homeless on the streets with my two children. But every month God provides in Jesus name! Thank you Father for your unconditional love. Even as I’m mocked and harassed by others for my circumstances and choice. I will keep Faith. Guns are not the problem. Guns were ubiquitous even in the cities of NY and Chicago up into the 1960's/1970's (when politicians decided attacking inanimate objects was easier than dealing with the fruits of the Welfare State and their soft-on-criminal policies. Jordan Peterson has addressed the vast emptiness in young men. The Darkness writhing young men results largely from the anti-male toxicity that resulted from 2nd- and 3rd-wave feminism. Young women's problems may stem from basing their value on comments, likes and retweets in social media. Both suffer from parental inattention, lack of religion/set moral values/self esteem. The common thread that seemingly runs through each and every one of the mass shooters in recent history is an extensive history of antidepressant use, and more recently, the use of adderol as small children in school to treat ADHD (or just being boys in the class of female teachers that did not know how or did not want to deal with boyish behavior. I did not get put on anti-depression medication until I was 31-32. In the past two decades, I have had bad reactions to some meds such as paranoia, anger, withdrawal, and even suicidal ideation. Messing with someone's brain chemistry can be very dangerous because each person can have a very different reaction than the next.

These studies the bishop references correlate to ones in other developed countries but those countries don't have the level of firearm violence and mass shootings the U.S. has. Those countries have far stricter gun control than we do. In the U.S. an 18 year old can obtain a military rifle and gun owners do not have to register guns as they do cars. No wonder young people are more likely to die by firearms than car accidents, and by the way, laws have been implemented over the last few decades that correlate to a reduction in car accident injuries and deaths. The surfeit of young people feeling hopeless and angry will continued to lead to tragic results, so I am glad the bishop mentioned both addressing the youth mental health problem and the lack of gun control in the U.S. No reasonable person thinks gun control alone is the answer to this problem.
@killianmiller6107

What people are afraid of is the slow creep toward disarming the population altogether. It makes it easier for powerful people to control others when they can’t defend themselves. If an 18 year old was raised to respect guns and his neighbor, should he still be barred from owning one? Of course we should legally do our best to prevent guns from getting into the hands of those who would do harm, and to an extent that does happen, somewhat recently I heard about a mother who turned her own son in when she saw serious warning signs looking through his diary. There are also lots of laws already in existence that have been poorly enforced while legislators still want to make more laws. People have a right to bear arms, owning a car is a privilege.

@@killianmiller6107 If you or others fear the so called disarming of society, look at the proliferation of guns that have been sold in America since the turn of the century. It's light years away from a disarmed population. I hope you will also examine your thoughts about gun laws. Assuming you are Catholic, it would be good to listen to the words of the archbishop of San Antonio, whose dioceses included Uvalde. "The 2nd Amendment did not come down from Mt. Sinai."

I'm so glad to see you wading into this complicated problem. We have to talk more about our children. We have to love them more than guns and politicians and political beliefs. The study you cited is a huge clue though. What changed in those years? Was this a gradual change rising steadily? A huge culprit seems to be social media. I read books years ago about the addictive, negative aspects of screen time. What was considered excessive fifteen years ago is now the low average of the ordinary teen. What else has changed from 2009 to now? It could also be the gun violence. If I had to face that as a teen I wouldn't be attending school. So much indifference from adults about their plight has not helped. Children and emotionally immature teens especially need to know that adults are in charge and looking out for them. I see many teens today who look lonely and sad. They need our help and God's help. Please keep studying this and talking about this Bishop, bless you.

When my daughter was in 6h grade, only she and two other kids actually played during recess. All the other kids took out their phones to do social media. She felt kind of lonely, in that only two other kids would play with her, and I remember having to talk to her about social media and its power. I really felt as though it was stealing those kids' childhoods. Later, as our daughter grew up, it would continue to be difficult to make friends. Girls can be very cliquey in Middle School and High School, and when my daughter didn't "fit in" by refusing to dress in a sexualized way, or by answering questions in class instead of acting stupid , she didn't have any friends in High School. We eventually had to home school her because High School was like an emotional battlefield every day.

I do agree that self-invention drives depression to an extent. But, I think that the bigger problem is single-parent households. Simply put, kids are not receiving the formation they need. They are lonely. They don't know how to make friends. Too many people are on the autism spectrum these days. Etc. Etc. If we wanted to address the heart of the matter, we would talk about parenting. After all, who decides how many hours a kid spends on social media? Too many children are growing up in single-parent homes. Strong and involved fathers are not in the home. That is the real plague. All those young men who shot up schools, etc., needed fathers. They had none. It's that simple.

I have a suggestion for the teen generation today, if you are able to talk with people that would be your grandparents age they may be able to help. In our day life was simpler (1950’s) and personal relationships throughout all age groups were very meaningful. If you listen to what they have to say and put it to good use, things can change. It starts one at a time, people will see the change in you and want a part of that change. Kind of paying it forward. Big Brothers & Big Sisters change lives, been there done that. Then you can pass it along! !!!

Very well said Bishop Barron. I worked for almost 28 years in the Juvenile Justice System. It was all to common to see kids gravitate to those who are like minded. When they can’t find such people they tend to turn inwardly and dwell on their problems. Social media is the ideal corner for teens and young men to search for those that agree with their subjective values and truths. Mentorship programs that role model men of good character, objectively demonstrate positive moral behavior and highlight the rewards of such behavior!

I'm a high school teacher. Teens are sad because they have been failed by their older generations. They are inheriting an increasingly unstable culture, economy, and climate. They know they are living in a civilization and way of life in decline, even if they don't have the language to articulate it. Even the social media issue is the fault of older generations. Who bought them those phones? Who sat them in front of a screen from a very young age as a 21st century pacifier? Experimenting on a whole generation's attention span and neurological activity. There's that saying about how an advanced culture plants trees for the next generation to enjoy, we have done the opposite: we have taken from their future to satisfy our wants in the present. I was born in 1989 and conditions in the USA just during my lifetime have been in steady decline with very little done to stop the bleeding. The increase in school shootings and nhilistic gun violence track with the cultural decline I have witnessed over my lifetime: endless wars, economic crises, deindustrialization, climate change, cultural malaise, etc. We are reaping what we have sewn over decades of dysfunctional leadership.

I also think they have no skills to survive. The world is full of opportunity. Do kids know how to cook, clean, work for money, volunteer, grow a garden, have a day with out air conditioning. If you keep giving a kid an out to why they are the way they are, it is just an unrelenting cycle. The News is an unrelenting cycle. It is amazing how on utube how the word gets spread. And how fast tomorrow it becomes obsolete. I have been watching the pro abortion/choice movement with Young people looking crazy, want free education. I keep saying Parents go bring your kids home because if you don't it will end up being your fault. Parents are afraid to Parent. This Political realm has become the Parents. And I believe Teachers and Priests have become a close second in line to be blamed. This world is not broken. God is in charge.

@@marcellahicks3984 your statement about "wanting free education" is revealing. K-12 education in the US is free because we have a public education system. Then 18 year olds are told to take out loans to go to college, something older generations didn't have to do as much because college was more affordable then. If they don't go to college they are told there is no opportunity for them. So a bank gets to extract interest from young people who haven't even gotten started living financially independent lives yet. That goes exactly to my point about stealing their future for gains in the present.

Honestly I spend alot of time in the virtual space and I developed a means to be happy. Balancing time on here is of course important, gluttony is a deadly sin for a reason. But I am with others who say the breakdown of the family and classical values is more the cause and this social media obsession and depression is an epiphenomena of a much deeper societal rot. Partly I think this due to my experience as above, but also because of another experience I had with my parents getting divorced and how I and my brother of four years younger reacted. I was 17 and though it was very hard I did not break me. My brother on the other hand still will not speak with our father. He has a family, and loves and cares for them and sacrifices for them as a father should However he also for a long time had that tinge of self-determination and self-creation that is so prevalant in the youth of today. I am saying this because if we scapegoat the technology, wr both risk becoming isolated and not evangelizing the culture, and we do not pull up the root that created the problem in the first place. Ultimately this traces itself back to the fact that our culture still vigorously holds onto the illusion of the Cult of Reason that original sin does not exist or we can pull ourselved up with our own means. It is Pelagianism ingrained silently masqurading under the banner of freedom. It is the good of the American vision, made into an idol as the culture rejects and withdraws from God. It is also technology made into an idol on the part of some, namely transhumanists of various strains. Technology is morally agnostic, what we do with it is the cause of evils. Phones can be great tools, when they are made to serve their owners and not exploit them. So we ought to invest in ethical design and companies and promote the Catholic Social Teaching and the virtues into the virtual space as we do with other spaces.

Exactly what I have been saying for years but of course not as eloquently and brilliantly as only bishop Barron can say. We are lost and lonely and separated from ourselves and from each other and from God. The last 2 years didn't help either, when we were not allowed to gather with our friends. My advice, though it seems simplistic, is turn off the news and social media and get back to church. Talk to people. Call your friends. Invite them over. Talk to strangers on the street. Engage with the world. And it's not just teenagers, it's everybody at this point. I went off of social media a year and a half ago and instituted a news blackout on Ash Wednesday of 2022 for Lent and I'm so happy that I've decided I'll never go back. Highly recommended. The human psyche and soul is not designed to absorb the amount of information and news, much of it fake, as people are subjecting themselves to. It's not the guns, it's loneliness and depression.

Sin is the problem bishop Barron. You keep beating this gun control drum and I honestly thought you were smarter than that. You should have a call to repentance and conversion of our nation instead of pandering to liberal politics as the solution to our countries issues. Our country, men and women, families, all need Christ. The breakdown of the family is what has caused this reprobate society we live in to prosper in its evil. And it’s the CHURCH LEADERSHIP who should be in the frontlines confronting moral evils leading the troops (the laity). But, you would feed us to the wolves instead of defend us from them

Bishop Barron: I would only expand the age demographic range. When you say this problem of "Teenage Angst" (as a 62 year old survivor of teenage depression during my college and post-UG days; and now the parent of a 24 year old male) I say that this alienation/depression is the scourge of adolescence (technically the years 14-26). Late adolescence can be equally dangerous to the 20-26 year old individual because they are more likely to be convinced of the certainty of the "truth" of moral relativism because of their experience of being surrounded by the prevailing self-invention, nihilism and materialism of their cohorts and the society at large and mistaken older heroes of the culture (examples: Madonna, to Joe Rogan, Elon Musk, crypto-currencies miners, Kardashians).

The Church needs to do more outreach & ministry to young people. How about sponsoring addiction & recovery programs? How about activities, like singles get-togethers, dances & potlucks, classes on finding a Godly life partner? I'm not suggesting we dumb down the Gospel or replace the choir with a heavy metal band. But Church & church activities shouldn't just be for senior citizens. Not a "museum for saints, but a hospital for sinners" of all ages. A safe place that is a clear alternative to the rest of the culture.

I agree that nescience and depression are major and growing problems among young people. I don't think these are the main problems causing mass shootings, though. People who are depressed sometimes harm themselves but usually abhor harming anyone else. In these mass shootings, I think a sort of wallowing in rage and pride in the idea of being the bad guy are the causes. Xenophon tells the story of Socrates meeting a young man who was thinking about whether he wanted to be a good person or not. Some people decide not to be good. I don't even think most of the mass shooters have such severe psychological problems. Some, but not all, were abused as kids. Almost all of them have mild psychological problems that could have been treated. We need people to encourage the young to lead the good life.

🕊🙏🏻🙏🏻🕊 There Is only one God, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Three parts ONE God. People have three parts, the body, the soul and the spirit, three parts, ONE person. The Bible says that we are all sinners. As it is written: There is none righteous , no not one. Romans 3:10 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.Romans 3:23 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags. Isaiah 64:6 For the wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23 (The word death in this verse means eternal separation from God in hell). Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Isaiah 1:18 Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures and that He was buried and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures. 1Corinthians 15:3-8 In whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:14 For by grace ye are saved, through faith; and not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 I do not frustrate the grace of God, for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Galatians 2:21 Your trust in Jesus and His shed blood on the cross to pay for your sins, is what saves you from hell. The moment you trust in Jesus and only Jesus, you are saved. Then, you should be baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Some Scriptures about hell by Jesus himself and how not to go there: In Luke 16:19-31 Jesus describes a rich man that lived lavishly and a poor beggar man named Lazarus. It came to pass that Lazarus died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom. The rich man died, was buried, then went to hell. 23 And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in TORMENT, saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented IN THIS FLAME. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received good things, and likewise Lazarus received evil things, but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that they which would pass from hence to you can not, neither can they pass to us, and would come from thence. 27 Then he said, I pray you therefore father, that you would send him to my father’s house. 28 For I have 5 brothers that he may testify unto them, lest also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham said unto him, They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them. 30 And he said, Nay father Abraham, but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” LOCATION OF HELL: Jesus said in Matthew 12:40, ”For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the HEART OF THE EARTH.” Paul said in Ephesians 4:9, ”Now that he ascended, was it but that he also DESCENDED into the LOWER PARTS OF THE EARTH.” HELL IS A PLACE OF FIRE: Jesus said in Luke 16:24,”….Father Abraham have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue for I am TORMENTED IN THIS FLAME.” Jesus said in Matthew 13:42,”And shall cast them into a FURNACE OF FIRE, there shall be WAILING AND GNASHING OF TEETH.” Jesus said in Matthew 25:41,”Then shall he also say to them on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, INTO EVERLASTING FIRE, prepared for the devil and his angels.” Jesus said in Revelation 20:15,”And whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE.” HELL IS A PLACE OF TORMENT: Jesus said in Luke 16:23,”And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in TORMENT….” 24 …..for I am TORMENTED in this flame.” Jesus said in Revelation 14:11,”And the smoke of their TORMENT ascended up FOR EVER AND EVER, and they have no rest day or night….” Jesus said in Mark 9:45-46,”And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off, it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the FIRE THAT NEVER SHALL BE QUENCHED. 46 Where their WORM DIES NOT, and the fire is not quenched.” Note that it doesn’t say “THE Worm”, it says “THEIR WORM” dies not. Jesus said in Revelation 21:8,”But the fearful and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whore mongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE, which is the second death.” Note that Brimstone is Sulfur and burns with a very strong odor of rotten eggs. The scriptures above prove when a person goes to hell they will constantly see hell, constantly smell hell, constantly feel the heat of hell, will constantly breath hell, will constantly hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth of others in hell, will constantly be aware of their own worms, they will have no rest day or night, there is no way out and it will continue for ever and ever, they can’t die because they are already dead. The following is how to not go there and it is a SIMPLE AND EASY thing to do: All of the book of Acts is what Jesus disciples said what we must to be SAVED - meaning not go to hell, which is repentance, water baptism in Jesus NAME, (Not the titles Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) and being baptized with the Holy Ghost. Jesus said in Mark 16:16,"He that believes and is BAPTIZED shall be SAVED, but he that believes not shall be damned." At about that same time He said in Matthew 28:19,"Go therefore and teach all nations BAPTIZING them in the name (SINGULAR name and not name's) OF the Father, and OF the Son, and OF the Holy Ghost." Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are titles and not names. Jesus disciples never used those words when they baptized anyone in water, nor did they use those words in one sentence regarding any other topic. Every time they said Jesus NAME at baptism which is Acts 2:38, Acts 8:14-18, Acts 8:38, Acts 9:18, Acts 10:44-48, Acts 16:15, Acts 16:33, Acts 18:7, Acts 18:8, Acts 19:3-5, and Acts 22:16. Jesus said in John 3:3-7,"Verily, verily I say unto you, Except a man BE BORN AGAIN, he can not see the kingdom of God. 5 Verily, verily I say unto, Except a man be born of water AND of the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 7 Marvel not that I say unto you, YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN." Being born of water is being baptized in water which is for the REMISSION OF SINS - meaning the INITIAL remission of sins and not the confessing of sins later addressed in 1 John 1:9. Being born of the Spirit is being baptized with the Holy Ghost. What being baptized with the Holy Ghost means is addressed in Acts 2:3-4, (Pentecost), Acts 8:17, Acts 9:18, Acts 10:44-48, and Acts 19:3-5 - which is when the Spirit of Christ initially dwells in a person. Nowhere in Scripture does it say it happens any other way than that way. There is not one Scripture that says a person receives the Holy Ghost just because they are a believer. Paul said in Romans 8:9-11,”But you are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, HE IS NONE OF HIS." Numbers 23:19, ”God is not a man that he should lie, neither the son of man, that he should repent, has he said and shall he not do it? And shall he not make it good?” Malachi 3:6,”For I am the Lord, I change not...” Hebrews 13:8,”Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” That means there is no reason to think that Jesus will make an exception and save someone that has not been baptized in water in Jesus NAME, and has not been baptized with the Holy Ghost. If you are convinced you need to get baptized in water in Jesus Name do a search and type in "United Pentecostal Church International", scroll down to just below the red box, type in your zip code, a screen will show a Church near you that will do that. Jesus said John 10:27, ”My Sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

(Used to make the simple bomb that blew up the Oklahoma Federal Building in 1995) Or to handguns, which account for 96% of deaths by gun in the US? I expect clergy to be able to hold down their pride and the human proclivity to never want to admit that they were wrong and to then give a reasonable reassessment of the issue at hand. Didn't get that here because you insisted on doubling down on your original faulty thinking. Why do you got absolutely trounced in the comment section by YOUR OWN followers on your last video? Thanks for this video, Bishop Barron. I watch and appreciate all your videos, but was disappointed by this one. Your final exhortation was to introduce young people, any way you can, to the world of objective value. But I was surprised that you, as a Christian bishop and scholar, didn't identify where "the world of objective value" can be found: in the revelation of God in Jesus Christ and His Word. Without going to the true source of objective value, parents and leaders are left to try to identify objective value on their own -- the very self-serving, self-oriented danger you spoke about in the message. I don't disagree with anything you said in the message -- I just felt that you didn't say enough. Your words were "secular" in the sense that they echo the Atlantic article you cited. Good secular advice, for sure. But as Christians, don't we have more to offer than limiting time on social media? Again, I appreciate all you do to promote the spiritual sanity of our culture. May God bless the work of your heart and hands.

Parents need a strong backbone these days as kids sometimes appear to take unrestrained control resulting in parents' feeling threatened and/or backing off to avoid perpetual conflict. Respect is lacking so often and yes, kids are self absorbed in the rot of social media (bullying, false concepts of beauty, materialism, voyeurism, the dark web, access to porn, drugs, etc.). Yes, restrict media time; provide more structure and personal engagement, get those kids into respected outreach programs to be exposed to helping others, volunteer work so they realize what you've said so often: "Your life is not about you." Generations years back, our parents and grandparents would not have flinched in maintaining standards. Neighborhood sports stressed fun and doing one's best striving for the higher ideal, not so much focused on being 'scouted' by professionals, vying for scholarship as touted today), limited tv (and very limited channel selections) comprised the lifestyle, along with lights out at a decent time, family meals, outdoor exercise, actual communication . . . That's when God & the 10 Commandments and prayer were still allowed in school. What a world these kids have been and continue to be enveloped in. How to break the internet addiction . . . seems beyond daunting.

Unfortunately, this is going to continue to be a reality for generations to come. I'm not sure if anybody is aware, but we have a severe crisis with the young male population. No role model fathers, nihilistic lifestyles, and endless impulsive pleasures. What else do you expect from teenage boys and young adults that waste their lives away eating junk food, playing video games, and watching pornography; all with having no real relationships? Throw big-pharma and a broken home into the mix and you have a big problem. It all comes down to a very simple reality and that is we have an entire generation of people with antisocial personalities and narcissistic world-views. Try talking to any teenager or young adult these days for 5 minutes and you'll gather everything they value in a few sentences. It's all virtue signals and fake personalities. No wonder they 'can't handle reality.'

Bishop, I have been a long time admirer of your work. However, given what you know about social media and the disastrous effects on teens and families, how do you justify remaining on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? Put another way, if there was a restaurant in town that served a drink - lets call it "Twit" - that had all the same side effects of social media (increased depression, suicide, etc.), would we be justified as Catholics to go to this restaurant and drink Twit with young people in an effort to share the Gospel message with them?

This shows more consideration and reflection than previous videos, but what these lost and broken people want by lashing out using [any] violence, is precisely the attention of having their names repeated again and again, as it was, again, in this video. People unburdened by complexity blame guns because the problem cannot be solved by simple solutions. Tyranny is a simple solution to the moral dilemma, but I wouldn't suggest it. God permits the freedom to live in an evil way, because it is exactly the same freedom to live in a loving way, and only love can conquer evil. In the meantime, guns are necessary to protect the many from the few.

Bishop Barron, I gather that violent crime is actually a fraction of what it was in the 1980s. Much has changed since then, but one of them is that people are watching far _less_ TV. From the 1950s to the 90s far too many impressionable youngsters spent far too much time passively absorbing sex and violence on network television with disastrous consequences. As for social media, city communities were broken down and people didn't know each other in the 1970s. No wonder mental health problems rocketed. It's far better that kids are talking to each other on social media, than not talking to each other at all.

@matthiggins6750
@matthiggins6750 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesshives5679 Doesn't work? The empirical evidence quite clearly refutes that. Look at other developed nations' rates of mass shootings or just firearms injuries and deaths. If instituting laws to keep bad people in line and punish them for breaking laws didn't work, we would have no laws. Look at drunk driving and the laws associated with it. During the Reagan years when those much stricter laws were implemented, conservatives didn't say that having stricter penalties for drunk driving would be ignoring the root causes of the problem. Indeed, these laws were not the only cause but a cause nonetheless in the lowering of drunk driving fatalities. Those who oppose gun control laws conveniently ignore that gun control laws do work, yet also support other laws, meant to target behaviors detrimental to society, like drunk driving.
@jamesshives5679
@jamesshives5679 2 жыл бұрын
@@matthiggins6750 There are many factors that contribute to other developed nations having lower gun deaths than the US. Numbers are easily cherry-picked and often the reality is more complicated, and this goes both ways. Let's not gloss over the fact that lesser developed countries are not known for relaxed gun laws. In fact, Brazil had extreme gun laws, prior to their new President. He relaxed gun laws, and what happened? The homicide rate dropped steeply in 2019. Does correlation equal causation? Not necessarily, but the significant decrease in the homicide rate is not something to be ignored. Even in gun control advocates' favored countries like the UK and Australia, the story is not so clear cut. The UK, after their strict gun control measures in 1996, saw a continued rise in gun crime until 2004. In Australia, after their mass "buy-back" of firearms, there was an uptick in murders the year immediately after, but then the rate continued in the downward trend it had been going prior to the buyback. Australia has more firearms today than it did prior to the buyback, by the way. Suicides were similarly not impacted by the law either, as they dropped accross the board, not just ones involving firearms. Yet another example is our own 1994 assault weapons ban. The results of the ban were as such, "Although the ban has been successful in reducing crimes with assault weapons, any benefits from this reduction are likely to have been outweighed by steady or rising use of non-banned semi-automatics with large capacity magazines, which are used in crime much more frequently than assault weapons. Therefore, we cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation's recent drop in gun violence." (Updated Assessment of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban: Impacts on Gun Markets and Gun Violence, 1994-2003) You might recall the infamous Columbine shooting happened in 1999, while the assault weapons ban was in effect. And that of course brings us to the issue of school shootings in particular. You probably know that schools are "gun free zones", and yet there has be an alarming rise in school shootings. I am sure it is for a number of reasons (i.e. attention because of publicity, which was also noted in the above cited report) however, the elephant in the room is that the murderers know they cannot be confronted by an equal force. Is it really a coincidence that the majority of mass shootings happen in "gun free zones"? Of course not. Chicago, with some of the strictest gun laws in the US, had more homicides than any other US city in 2021. The UK has recently be struggling with a rise in gun smuggling (often from central and eastern Europe, according to the National Crime Agency). It goes without saying that illegally armed criminals and unarmed, law-abiding citizens, are not a good combination, and gun control cannot stop this. When you dig into the details of gun control and its effects, you find the answers murky at best.

Bishop, you were looking for answers for the escalation of gun violence in America and this is it. Leon Frank Czolgosz is an archetype for every person who loses hope in their faith, falls to an ideology, and in despair decides to take matters into their own hands by picking up a gun. As he traveled to Buffalo, NY Leon was still unsure of whether or not he would carry out his crime until he met with the Catholics of the Polish-American community there. As he stayed amongst our laity, he saw the hypocrisy of our faith in that our people lived lives of sin all week, and then went to confession on Saturday so that they could receive the Eucharist on Sunday. On Monday, the people returned to their lives of sin with no change at all. Seeing this solidified the loss of his faith in is heart and he went ahead with his plan. No matter how much the Irish diocesan priest or Father Hyacinth Fudzinski, OFM Conventual, explained to Leon that God still had a place for him, there was no way to restore his hope with any personal conviction. Our people were also blamed for the crime and sent many bibles to the jail to help our pastor attempt to convert Leon but it was too little to late for our people. Leon was dead long before he ever sat in the electric chair. Of the priests and his faith he said, "No, damn them. Don't send them here again. I don't want them," and "Don't you have any praying over me when I am dead. I don't want it. I don't want any of their damned religion." Father Hyacinth explained, “he is the most heartless man I ever saw, he has not the grace to love God. Leon closed his heart to God dying obstinate in his sin. His last words were: "I killed the President because he was the enemy of the good people - the good working people. I am not sorry for my crime. I am sorry I could not see my father." It is in this way we failed the shooter because we failed to offer him our guidance and our love and we failed to show him a better way through our witness. This is because we failed to live up to it ourselves. The bibles- he never saw them.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. There is too much fear out there. The Church and others have failed to alleviate all the fear out there. Jesus said "Do not be afraid", or some variant of that in the New Testament 27 times. He used that more than any phrase including "Love thy neighbor" which he uses only seven times. There's a reason. It's hard to love when you're afraid. We live in a society of fear. Everyone is afraid of each other and everything. Look how the Walmart shelves were baren of toilet paper a little while back. People are literally sh-ting in their pants.

Increasing rates of teen depression represent a real crisis, but the consequences of it are suicides and unhappiness, not mass shootings. Shootings are not the consequence of mass sadness, they’re the result of deeply disturbed individuals having easy access to guns in this country. We can’t eliminate the population of people who are truly spiritually sick. But we can disarm them, and we must. I know you favor common sense gun legislation, but personally I think the issues of depression and mass shootings don’t need to be conflated.
