Of course, Len Beadell was still very much alive then and a larger than life character in the local folklore. I was recently in Woomera and was heartened to see how reverentially he was treated by the museum. He's buried there as well. Vale, Len.

And if it wasn't for the fact that the Australian Government fell into bed with the British Government and supported the Atomic Bomb Testing in the 50's, Len Beadell and his Gunbarrel Construction Party would probably have never been assembled ... the story could be very different. While the testing and the way it was carried out was a shameful part of Australian history, the modern day adventurer has indeed been the winner.

@@jessesands4099 And so there was. However, firstly, the British didn't test on their own soil, they did it here, they didn't ensure that the testing zone was clear of all human habitation, and when they left, they didn't clean up properly after themselves ... and much of the land is still contaminated, and will be for 25,000 years. There have been a number of books written on the subject. Watch our Trans Australian Railway video, part two. We visited Maralinga and covered this as well as was possible for us. kzbin.info/www/bejne/epyUc2qupqecaNE

Great stuff. seems pretty remote for most of the way, but that's how it was built in those days of long ago.
