In this episode, we travel in our converted Ford transit campervan, with our dog, to Gundagai NSW
Australia, where we free camped at Morleys Creek at Gundagai.
Places we check out in this episode include:
Dog on the Tuckerbox
Niagara Cafe
Morleys Creek free camp ground
Historic Gundagai bridges
Gundagai historic railway station
Gundagai Historical Museum
Gundagai is a picturesque country town in the beautiful Riverina. You’ll find the famous Dog on the Tuckerbox Pioneer Monument, as well as a rich architectural, colonial and indigenous history, great fishing, and boutique wineries. The town's main industries, unchanged since the nineteenth century, are sheep and cattle with a healthy dose of passing trade from people moving between Sydney and Melbourne.
Morleys Creek free camp Gundagai offers a peaceful setting on the banks of Morleys Creek, all within walking distance of Gundagai’s town centre.With easy access, this campground offers a quiet, peaceful setting, shady level sites, and plenty of space for self-contained caravans and RVs to stay for up to 48 hours.
Fishing can be enjoyed in the creek. Located just behind this free camp are the historic Gundagai bridges, one of the many things to see and do while visiting Gundagai.
There are no amenities at the Morleys Creek campground, however there is a dump point and water nearby at the historic railway station.
While free, donations are greatly appreciated to help with the upkeep of this fantastic Gundagai free camp.
We found this Gundagai free camp can be a little noisy due to its proximity to the road. In saying this, the noise did not worry us.
Niagara Cafe
The new owners of The Niagara Cafe have been trading Monday to Friday offering coffees, sweets and meals to locals. The cafe was established in 1902 by a Kytherian Greek, Strati Notara, and then continued with the Castrission family who installed the art deco interior and exterior in 1938.
The Loukissas family ran the cafe from 1983, making it the oldest Greek-run cafe and milk bar in Australia. Now, with the renovations, many of the original art deco features have remained because the new owners said it was “vital to preserve them.”
Gundagai Historical Museum
Those interested in history will find the Gundagai Historical Museum fascinating. It is a treasure trove of memorabilia, with displays of pioneer life, bushrangers and even Phar Lap’s saddlecloth.
One highlight of the vast collection is the two gorgets (medallions) presented to Yarri and Jacky, the Wiradjuri men whose efforts saved many lives during the great flood of 1852.
The collection also includes a T-model ford, farm machinery, wagons, equipment, clothing, coins, stamps, household items and other interesting paraphernalia from the 19th and early 20th century.
The Museum is managed entirely by dedicated volunteers and the visitor’s book hints at the nostalgic journey of many who have spent time going through the displays.
Gundagai Gaol
Explore cells that held the infamous bushrangers Moonlite and Peisley. The Old Gundagai Gaol stands at the corner of First Avenue and Byron Street, surrounded by a high wall of local slate with rendered capping.
Entertaining and informative self-guided audio tours of this heritage site are available daily at the Gundagai Visitor Information Centre. Entry to the Gaol is available only during 9:00am - 3:30pm. Call into the Centre to pick up audio and headphones, map and a key and head up to the Gaol to start your tour (located only 2 blocks from the Visitor Centre). The self-guided tour takes approximately 45-60 minutes to complete.
We hope you enjoy our channel. It’s great to see Australian tourism picking up with many people traveling around Australia in caravans, campervans, RVs, and camping in tents. We enjoy part-time van life, creating weekly episodes that are live at 5pm (AEST) Sundays, and sharing our experiences on our travels with our cavoodle, Twyla. In our episodes we stay at free and paid campsites, showing our tips and tricks on making life on the road easier and more fun. Come join us on our adventures! Hi Deano...just a question. We are off to Vic in 2 weeks in our van to Glenrowan and stopping at Gundagai for a night or 2..looks awesome! Whats the name of that free camping? Is it Morley Creek something? Looks gorgeous. Twyla is so cute 🙂
@kingdeanoadventures
@kingdeanoadventures 10 ай бұрын
Hi Kristina, That’s fantastic! I pretty sure the campsite was Morleys Creek. It’s located across the creek from the museum, you should find it previously. The ladies at the information office were really helpful, so I'd recommend popping in there too, where they should be able to help you if you get lost. You will absolutely love the town such a nice spot and a great post to camp.Have fun and let us you know how you go. Regards Deano 😊
