I assume it's the energy of the Zero system in Epyon, which is being pushed out. I remember that, in an episode of the series, Heero goes out of control with the Wing Zero and when he is ejected from the cockpit he has a yellow aura. Quatre goes and touches Heero's body, and absorbs a kind of energy. Another reference to this energy would be in the first confrontation of Wing Zero and Epyon. Zechs and Heero have a kind of overload just like gundams.

+Luke van Kleef in the anime Heero first piloted Epyon but Zechs and him battled and got crazy and switched their Gundams
