Gundam was denoted as the first "real robot" series, the opening song actualy would probably make more sense if it were the opener to the orignal Gundam. If you have ever seen the orignal gundam series opener you would probably think you were about to watch something more akin to Voltron or Mazinger than the gundam series we recognize. This opener is very ironic in that the first half of zz gundam season is more of a comedy set in the gundam universe, that is to say it is very much an anime.

The song itself is an anime TV show opening theme song describing how the characters in the show are discovering that fighting a war in giant robots isn't anything like a kid's cartoon; I'm not sure if that's irony or not, but it's something.

It's true, the first half of ZZ was made to be lighthearted as relief from Zeta's dark tone, and because of Tomino of course. In the second half of the anime, things get serious. I've never had a problem with the first half of the anime, but that's really just dependent on the feelings of the viewer.

my biggest problem is that it is such a jarring change immediately after Zeta, especially since it was a direct continuation from where Zeta left off.

It's comical, but there are still some downer moments. A minor character who somehow survived the events of Zeta gets killed in the second episode. One of the aspects of the first half of the series that is unusual is that each episode is kind of Judau vs. the Villain of the Week. Since it was the first Gundam series to really try that, it can be a little rough sometimes. Overall, I think it's enjoyable. It's no masterpiece, but out of all Gundam series, I would still put it in the better half.

I actually watched it right after posting that comment. Yeah, it has its ups and downs but i liked it overall. the first few eps really are whacky as hell. it's almost like an old school super robot (Voltron/Go-Lion) or tokusatsu (ultraman). the second half of the series, while bleak, is pretty entertaining, and it def filled some holes in Unicorn. Although CCA is the immediate predecessor to Unicorn, I think ZZ does a better job of showing how terrible/dysfunctional the late (first) Universal Century is..

Hoo boy...you must've forgotten the multiple gassed colony attempts from Zeta. And yeah, the colon drop in ZZ is really F'd up to considering "kill ALL the civilians!" And CCA had some of the WORST UC era characters in them...

Judau is actually a cool guy he is a fun loving rebel! I like amuro too when he finally grew out of that negitive attitude in chars counterattack. But Kamille.... jeez what a sad pessimistic guy he was!..... a hell of a pilot, but a drag to be around.

@Draplax - The ZZ was in development for at least the 1st 12 episodes IIRC,so Judau had to use Zeta,especially since Kamille couldn't.

well , i think Tomino, the creator, was originally going to add him(char) by the 2nd half of this series, but plans changed when they gave him the "go ahead" to start on the "Char's CS" movie, he still should had add him but i dunno, i think it was going 2 contradict the whole plot of the movie, but WHATEVER..

I'm not a big fan of Zeta, but it's decent enough to watch. The next great series after the original, I think, is Victory. Though between Zeta, ZZ and Victory, Gundam fans can't agree on which, if any, are good. You'll have to make up your own mind.

@Greyfox404 really? did not know that. Personally i always ranked Kamille slightly lower than Amuro. And i always got the feeling from ZZ that even though Judau was clearly a newtype, he could never quite fully grasp the full potential of a newtype. Though at times, like when Haman shot his sister, it seemed he showed newtype powers beyond even Amuro or Kamille. But thats just what i believe...
