I'm new to training my dog. I've never even thought about a "blind retrieve". It makes so much sense. Love it brother 👌🏾.

Nice! I usually start with 10-week old puppy in a hallway and a soft paint roller or tennis ball. I also run away from puppies when retrieving in the field...want the return as fast as the retrieve. Short distance and running away from the puppy as she returns...this also helps develop a habit so pup is less likely to drop a bumper returning from swimming retrieve.

Might it be useful to add in an extra step for a hesitant dog by laying a scent trail with a dragged dummy?

It's just an old tradition. "Hup" doesn't just mean "sit". It means "sit and pay attention to me because I'm about to give you more instructions".
