It’s incredible to see how far gunpla has come over the years. Even the most disappointing HG models today far exceeds the best kits of the 80s. Gunpla has gone from being a toy to being an art form.
@Mobius_118Ай бұрын
Hell, some of today's HG's could rival early RG's.
@jacksonclark9826Ай бұрын
Disagree with the last statement. Todays kits are more like toys and the OG kits are more like traditional model kits.

Old gunpla is just so undeniably charming to me. Sure, what we get now is objectively better but there's a certain purity to these classic kits

This is especially true when in comes to ships etc. The new kits are so bland......

the original HG line also came with a frame structure to attach the parts similar to a RealGrade but more simplified. It also used Injection molding (some parts came molded in more than 1 color. IIRC the RX-78-2's shield came in red plastic with a yellow cross premolded). The frame structure would later be repeated under VGundam kits.

With as much as Gundam has influenced Gunpla, we have had Gunpla influence Gundam by various kits and games. Gunpla is probably the only Gundam Black Hole even deeper than AoZ line.

I recently finished the old 1990 HG Gundam MK II. The System Injection system looks great. That's a molding process where two or more colors are injected in one runner or part to minimize the need to use paint. So it's not painted, it's plastic

If I remembered correctly the 1/100 small kits from Blue Comet SPT Layzner in 1985 may be the first snap-fit Bandai kits in history.
@breakingbashaАй бұрын
technically you missed Plamo Kyoshiro which came before MSV and was the actual origin of some MSV designs. Great video regadless
It's kind of fun that they did that, but it also seems super pointless. I don't want a new kit that recreates all the shortcomings of a 40 year old kit... I wouldn't mind a new kit that really looks like the Gundam did in its anime but they don't seem to be capable of that without extensively redesigning things
@darkhorse744Ай бұрын
Great vid! But I was surprised there was no mention of the new Best Mecha Collection RX-78, it's basically the original RX-78 1/144 but completely colour separated and snap fit.

oh yea going back in time with the glue kits! Love these older kits. ALL HAIL THE PLASTIC CRACK!! I did a few vids on some of these on my KZbin channel 4-5 years ago . Also i really wish Bandai would do an update of the 1/1200 scale ships that aren't the very expensive DX series . Also miss the 1/48 scale kits, very sad not making more .
@jeffholt9437Ай бұрын
Yes - I love the ships from the classic series (not the new ones which are soulless). Some are hard to get so I'd be happy if they re-released them (plenty of anniversary box sets doing the rounds at the moment....) but some HG level (and price!) reboots would be great!!
@alfianfahmi5430Ай бұрын
The craziest thing about the old 90's 1/144 HG kits is that some of them have spot-on accurate gimmicks, like core block on RX-78 and full transformation gimmicks on Zeta, ZZ, and Zeta Plus. Not even the recent HGUC kits did it without any partsforming.
@rapidemboar4625Ай бұрын
Yeah I'm a bit sad this video glosses over just how crazy the original HG kits were for their time. The fully-implemented gimmicks and injection-molded parts and inner frames basically make this line something of an extremely early Real Grade.
@Shinnasuka73Ай бұрын
2 of my favorite old gunpla kits are without a doubt the 1/100 gundam mk ii and 1/100 full action ZZ gundam, and if we are going off of any old bandai model from the 80s lets talk about their 1/100 full action L gaim kits or the 1/100 vifam kits, like the 1/100 neofam is literally nearly fully color separated other than things like the visor on the head and other things here and there

To be fair clover’s gundam toy line was based on an older designs from before the show was finalized, like when it was still going to be called gun boy. But yeah they’re a bit silly looking. Original gundam models were made with traditional scale model building in mind, snap fit wasn’t really a thing yet.

Look at current gunpla manual and you may see small print somewhere that states that all pictures included in the manual are painted sample. As good as color separation in today's gunpla, what you see in the manual and promo images are not exactly "out of the box". Especially in HG or SD with a lot of foil stickers, their promo images never shown any visible stickers because well, they don't use the stickers and painted the parts instead. And that's exactly what the stickers are, temporary solution until you do the real one (painted), those stickers never meant to last.

@@austinreed7343 For me, Z and ZZ are kind of the same line. I think Sentinel is the first glimpse of HG. The first HG Z Gundam borrow the transformation from the Z Plus which explain its wings, which look different from the anime.

Bandai is pronounced bun-dai, like in "bundle," not ben-dai. Same problem when english speakers call manga a "menga".. Also because several Japanese generations grew up on these old simple one-color models they aren't spoilt from the get go, and it's common knowledge to treat gunpla and other plastic models kits as this - a plastic model. Meaning people are aware of its limitations being a delicate model kit, and they plan ahead to improve and detail the kit before even buying one. Basically your classic scale modeler approach to every model kit. They still reprint and sell these kits btw. And people still buy and customize them to make them look like a modern model. Everything is getting customized and model kits are treated more like a base structure or a mold to build your detailing work upon. Similar to how you 3d print a resin kit and then glue, paint and detail them in the process. Unlike how it's in the west, who just got exposed to gunpla several decades later, where people get a fairly modern gunpla kit (which looks like an engineering marvel compared to vintage kits) they randomly saw in Walmart or whatever, like the RG Zeta, and throw a childish tantrum right away about how it's "worst gunpla ever" and how it's not like an action figure to pose out of the box. The fact that we even have such models that have intricate articulation today is more of a miracle rather than a given. You try complaining like that about RG Zeta or RG Sinanju in Japan (both kits are among top selling models at home) and people will simply look at you weird like you're some kind of brash child who lacks basic modelling skill to improve their model or something. I personally think the Japan approach is a very simple way to start enjoying any model kit regardless of its age. There's no "bad" model kit out there. It's just that some models require more advanced skills, patience and the right tools to deal with. If you're a person who at this age needs instant gratification then maybe it's not the right time to get into plastic models now, and better get figures instead.
