The scientist was hired to intentionally create poisons for people doing the heinous crime of having a beer. Something that the real world federal government actually did do, killing and crippling a lot of folk just looking for a drink, and sometimes if the product was common enough, people using the product for it's intended purpose, with no intention to make/consume alchohol. Any man that is willing to poison strangers because they have the gaul to disobey a law that no one follows, not even the people who put it in place, ain't worthy of my pity.
