"Gunsmoke" was not only the best radio Western, it is easily one of the top ten shows of the entire Golden Age of Radio.

This is one of the better shows from the earlier period of the "Gunsmoke" series with a very sensitive portrayal by William Conrad in keeping the real circumstances of Martin Blair's corrupt nature secret from his sister. William Conrad kept the real aspects of Martin Blair's "dark side" secret from his sister Catherine throughout the show as he felt sorry for her and what the real truth would have done to both Catherine and Martin Blair's mother who lived in in Boston..

The portrayal of Matt Dillion by William Conrad is outstanding. He makes him seem almost supernatural.

Absolutely, I've been listening to these shows for the past year, and I've been watching the TV program with James Arness recently and the difference is unbelievable! Robert Conrad's portrayal is a thousand times better than James Arness! Unfortunately, Conrad was too short and overweight to fit the TV show. Arness is very tall, but his voice and personality are completely opposite of Conrad's. He's mild mannered instead of hard and aggressive. I used to love the TV show when I was a kid, but I wasn't even born when the radio series ran, but now I'm addicted to the radio show!

William Conrad was a tremendous talent - a great voice actor, an excellent film character actor, a fine TV performer and a highly competent film director. There wasn't anything he could not do.

I wonder if this episode may have been inspired by the Father Brown short story "The Sign of the Broken Sword".

Actually, they seem to have drunk as much coffee as they did beer and whiskey. The whiskey was sold in shot glasses and was oftentimes watered down which makes their consumption of spirits even less.
