UPDATE: As of A20.1 loot tiers have shifted. They are as follows: Tier 0 (1-41) Tier 1 (42-101) Tier 2 (102-191) Tier 3 (192+) After lootstage 290, you will no longer see changes to your loot. This is effectively the maximum lootstage, even if the game can display higher numbers.

The lootstage boost from more difficult biomes seems very worth it, as long as the biome itself isn't going to kill you every time you step outside. I've found that you can get a lot of mileage out of putting level ups into a favorite ranged weapon perk and crafting a higher tier and quality than you have available to you. This'll let you complete quests more easily, which means you'll have the dukes to buy things outside your ability to craft or find.

After gaining decent environmental protection, head to a snow biome nearby your starting town (in early game) and raid a few POIs. The loot will always be better than in the forest.

as a general rule, I personally open everything I see in a POI and always go with a quest there. It's all RNG you never know what you might find and when you might find it and the quest will help at the end with good loot, once i've found some medicinal loot in the trash when i needed it the most, so yeah check everything and keep on hoarding :D

I am not much for testing, but I got an idea in my head while at the trader turning in a quest and tried it out and it might be something worth testing. I am not sure if the contents are predetermined or random, but the loot packs you get from the trader seem to be affected by loot stage as well. I took the SMG pack from the trader in the green grass biome. Instead of just opening it where I was, I took it into the edge of the wasteland, put on lucky looter goggles, used an eye candy and opened it. I got a quality 6 SMG-5 and 300 rounds of 9 mil from the box. I was only level 27 at the time. So the packs might be awesome to store up and open in a higher tier biome, or it might have just been stupid dumb luck. Thought I would mention it for those who like to test such things.

Huh the change to lucky looter is an interesting one. VERY handy if you want to minmax your loot potential by leaving the forest and heading for the snow or wasteland, and it just gets handier as you both level up and poi tier level up. Not so useful, at least early game, in the forest. But I like it. Last time it was barely useful for bumping to the next tier sooner in alpha 19 and for end game boosts to tier 3 loot quality and numbers. It might be worth putting points into once I get my primary build setup and am ready to spread out into supplementary skills.

Is that the A19 loot introduction chart you are showing @ 10:15? If so, that chart doesn't reference the new primitive weapons so does all of the other information translate over to A20? I am confused, because when I look at the xml for lootprobtemplate for T3 it shows that you must have a loot level of 118 minimum (not 90+ as it was in A19) before you have a chance at any T3 weapons.. or am I misreading something here?

Hmm I had a closer look and I think you are correct. Yes, I am using the A19 loot progression chart because there isn't one for A20 and its a great visual tool to help explain loot. But yeah at first glance I do think the tiers have shifted a bit. It appears to be Tier 0 (1-39), Tier 1 (40-79), Tier 2 (80-117), Tier 3 (118+). I'm going to update the pinned comment with this new information, thank you for pointing this out!

I remember in Alpha 19 at around game stage 100 or so, I'd still find a few level 6 blunderbuss' every day regardless of what POI I was raiding. I even found one inside a pile of trash in the middle of nowhere.

Side observation: I'm assuming that loot stage affects zombie drops, or "Z-packs". I wonder if you were settled near an alternate biome to the pine forest, if it would be "better" to build a horde base in that biome and acquire better loot through the zombie loot bags by morning versus if you were in the forest. Fantastic analysis in this video, this obviously took many hours to create and test. We, the 7D2D community, thank you for your effort and time. :)

Loot stage affects the loot within z-packs but not the type of pack that is dropped. Things like feral wights, mutated, and lumberjacks can drop the blue bags, and demos can drop the red bags. So living in the snow or wasteland gives you higher probability of getting the better bags and you get better lootstage so better stuff in the bags too

idk how you figured this out but this is amazing. Im day 60 ish in the wasteland with level 4 looter perk and ive found maybe 8 pink augers but i still havent found a pink steel pickaxe. I dont understand the math but great video! and as i unpaused and watched another 30 seconds... i realized why i never found a pink steel pickaxe but keep finding augers, which is kind of annoying... so now knowing this, ill have to purposely lower my loot stage to hopefully find one. and i dont feel like doing the math, so i guess im stuck with the t5 steel pickaxe. again thanks for the video and im sorry by a21, all of your hard work done here will probably be obsolete lol

Great video, I don't really try to Min./Max. my gameplay but having a good idea of how game mechanics work is very helpful. I quite often put a point into Lucky looter or salvage operations early game because even if they aren't great right away you will already have them when you pass a certain threshold and won't need to level up to start benefitting from them. Of course I usually build my character with Intellect as primary backed up with perception and fortitude because nothing beats a nerd with a machine gun and explosives.

Great video and quite a bit of information in it. For some parts, I still disagree with it. First point is the building tier's relation to loot stage. The bonus is flat 3 per tier, as you said, added to the flat bonus of the biome, lucky goggles and Eye Kandy. However, the flat amount doesn't scale per level. Instead there is a +5% per tier to loot stage as well, added to the biome's percentage. The way you interpreted it may quite well provide the same numbers as a result, but the way it's calculated is a bit different. Secondly, there is a loot bonus for a container as well, if it's the last "big" loot box in a POI. The value is a flat +6 and 5%, added respectively to the other bonuses I've already mentioned. Thirdly, while this isn't something you said that I would disagree on, I would at least mention that a) the chart linked is for A19 and b) the chart is made by The Fun Pimps and the link to it can be found in the loot.xml. Overall this comment's purpose is not to downplay your efforts on this video, as you do explain the loot in a way that is well enough for most of the players not looking to min-max their way of looting. However, to a nerd like me, these fine details are something that keep me awake at nights :P. Keep doing what you do!

I did max out LL as soon as possible in my latest game at Warrior difficulty (and Daring adventurer and Better Barter and Salvage operation and Treasure hunter basically tested my mercenary build and just did looting and quests day and night) and I must say having a lvl 6 auto shotgun, a lvl 5 M60, a lvl 5 sniper rifle, a lvl 6 SMG, a lvl 4 Magnum, a mix of lvl 4 and 5 iron and steel armor and so much ammo I can't store it in my base looting/trading and doing quests still feels broken. Not to mention I bought a motorcycle before day 10 for money, since then I bought a 4x4 and I still have 140k+ money left at day 21. I also did most of my looting in a snow biome and last 7 days was in a big city with huge POIs, they were kinda challenging, at one point a big office building (a multi level Crack a book building with a basement) sent 40+ zombies after me, most of them feral and special like soldiers, lumberjacks, wights, cops, bikers, etc. It was bonkers.

Just posted a couple of times about loot on your latest LP vid. Must've been the Force predicting this vid for me, though not so proficient or I'd have waited to see this and posted those here instead LOL. I don't seem the only one to notice acid in short supply but I have also noticed low drops for robotics parts and honey too. The robotic parts, meh, I can see why they'd be rarer while maybe the honey is because stumps where you used to have a good chance to get it are in the wilderness, with no bonus? Still would be an issue for honey though, you kinda rely on it. When you find more antibiotics than honey, while herbal even rarer, something is up. Also, I was finding pipe weapons in the wasteland with a loot bonus in the 200's. Yet to find a machine gun that's not pipe and only one actual pistol, quality 2 early game. Not found one double barrelled shotgun but have found several pump shotguns, best in wasteland but several in temperate forest too. Yet to find a pipe shotgun either, though several pistols and machine guns, mostly the latter. Maybe this is due to me exploring quest POIs for the rewards, rather than just popping in anywhere as I feel like it as I did previously? My MP game I just started, we have found one shotgun, one pistol and one machine gun pipe weapons so far on day 1. Possibly due to my accelerated levelling bonus for my SP game there's some quirk there but it doesn't explain (unless exceptionally bad luck) 20 stumps (that was just me, dunno how many my fellows whacked but they've yet to find any either), zero honey in MP game with standard exp. As I said in your other vid, worrying if you can't find the damned stuff that's needed for early levels.

I'd have to dig deeper but I do feel as though weapon drops in loot have been turned down. I looted something like 50 tier 5 chests with MAX lootstage and only pulled out like 25 weapons... Granted most of them were quality 6 tech 3 weapons, but still.

Armour is just silly at this point when I've rarely found anything that isn't quality 6, exception being steel and quest rewards, but zero quality 6 weapons or tools except for stone ones. Quality 5 is max on those so far. Again, could be due to my accelerated levelling plus the forest biome mainly. I should spend more time in the wasteland, see if it helps, which it should. IIRC my loot stage in the forest is 90+ which is likely an issue. It was in the 200's, want to say 241 but I slept since then, in the wasteland but the pump shotgun I found was quality 5, as were a couple of pipe weapons and a steel pickaxe. Also found quality 5 pipe weapons and 2 steel pickaxes and 1 quality 5 iron shovel in the forest biome btw.

It seemed in a19 it was a little more random, but as I hit the same nearby POIs on our multiplayer servers (Salty Zombies) I tend to get duplicates of what I got the day before quite often. Not it's not gated, you can absolutely jump into higher tech weapons if your loot stage is high enough

I checked back a few times but I didn't see if you said does this loot tier system effect item drop bags from killing zombies? As in should I build my horde base inside a POI or in a more challenging zone?

No loot stage does not affect the probability that a loot bag will drop. However, it can affect the loot that you get out of one. Moreover, if you live in the snow biome you will have more lumberjacks around and they can drop the blue loot bag so I would say that is your best place to live if you want good loot bags

Thanks for this. I've been wondering why I'm still finding stone age crap and q1 iron tools at lootstage 38; turns out I'm still in baby loot tier. I've had pretty negative thoughts on how TFP have handled crafting from A17 forward, but my crafted tools and armors are easing the sting a little. Still bitter about the endless supply of paper in bookshelves, though, in place of actual books/schematics. I get more books from trash than I do the container that's supposed to specialize in dropping books.

Yeah. But what percentage of literature is survival-related after all? Its just realistic to find mainly stupid gossip magazines or normal books only useful for reading and paper instead of useful books. The trash thing is just unnatural, its even more op than before now.

@@robertbretschneider765 While I understand that argument (and it's been made to death anytime someone criticizes any aspect of the current loot balance), I still find it frustrating based on the more arcade-like nature of the game. The same argument should apply to opening commercial shipping crates and finding murky water instead of mineral water, jerry-rigged stone tools instead of commercial grade steel tools, or backyard pipe guns instead of properly manufactured firearms. This isn't even taking into account the fact that primers just somehow don't exist in this universe. But I know I'm not going to convince you or the rest of the "book realism" crowd, and that's ok. I'm not trying to, and I'm not trying to belittle your preferences. I'm just shouting frustration in to the void. My "issue" (not that it really is one) is fixed in Darkness Falls, anyway.

I had no idea how this worked in a20, but I usually up the zombie spawn rate and decided to make a base in the wasteland because the forest is too quiet and boring and last night my loot stage was 619. I have no idea if thats super high or not but I was surprised because it was MUCH lower in the forest when I was going back to my old base to get resources. Wasteland with upped zombie spawns and decreased spawn delay is amazing!

You can tell what tier the POI is based on the type of chest at the end. Metal chest is T3, small hardened chest T4, large hardened chest T5

Thanks for the brilliant explanation! This game is amazing! I have a question: What determines the item quality you get from Tier 5 missions, and in the trader's secret stash (other than the perk for better secret stash)? Because I maxed out Better Barter (or whatever the perk for better items in the trader's secret stash was), and even then I was only getting level 2-3 Military Armor. I was a pretty high level too, like almost level 100. Are there other forces at play when the item levels in trader's secret stash and/or from quests (other than the perk for a better secret stash and how high a tier you quest just did) are determined? How can I get the trader to sell me level 6 military armor for example? Thanks to anyone in advance for the explanation :)

Okay I'll try to explain the best I can briefly. Trader inventory is not dependent on day, gamestage, or lootstage. Traders on day 1 will have the same chances of spawning inventory as they have on day 1000. Quest rewards are different. Based on tier, you can have access to certain groups of loot. Furthermore, better loot is unlocked with higher lootstage. So you'll get better quest items the more you level up and the higher your quest tier is.

The spreadsheet is nice and all, but as a new player I have no clue what POI is what tier. I can make an assumption based on things like size, but the official wiki is heavily outdated so I don't actually know the tiers of POI's.

The more trader jobs you do the better handle you'll get on this. They send you on "tier 1 fetch" or tier 3 fetch/clear" etc so you can start to learn what they look like if you're driving around town.

You can also tell by the loot chest at the end. The box is tier 1, leather chest tier 2, metal chest tier 3, then tier 4 is the small hardened chest and tier 5 is the large hardened chest. You'll get to know them the more you play
